That "2.5 Ton" is reffering to the safe load capacity of the vehicles in which the axle came from. So whichever military vehicle that the axles came from, it could safely carry 5,000 lbs directly on it (not on a trailer). Just like even though you may have swapped 1 ton axles into your blazer, you still have the frame (and possibly suspension) of the 1/2 ton k5 blazer, and therefore it can only safely transport 1000 lbs in the cargo area.
