this has got to be the worst slating I have ever seen - the purpose of the slate is to sync pictures and sound - how could an editor do this when the board is clapped outside the field of view of the camera - also @alancmclaughlin is right when he says that the clapper should enter the frame open, this indicates that the take hasn't been marked!!

@AlanCMcLaughlin it's easier if you keep the slate open before the sound is running just because of the sound so that the magnet in the slate doesn't make a similar sound, but its not like a clapper rule or something, there r times when the clapper just cant make it on the second to the set, so yeah.

u do not have to open the slate when there is a MOS going on, the sound is not relavent so u just need to show the right numbers
