Real nice bassdrum sound there! Sounds really nice and warm, like a big pillow almost (I guess the sustain kinda does that):)
If you could get that kind of big fat sound on your toms too...
What kind of gear do you use for this? I got the mics now (except the overheads), but do you record all channels seperately? Or do you mix them together and record 2-track? And do you use any buss compression? I've been messing around with it a little bit, and it can really make your kit sound as one piece
@FalanxProducing Yes, 8 tracks recorded separately into an M-Audio profire 2626 which then gets connected to pc via firewire. I render all 8 tracks into a final 2-track stereo track. I try and avoid all eq, fx and processing, what I do is usually add a little eq and compression on the master mix but during the recording I use nothing...straight signal. Thanks and good luck!
Close, the only difference is i point the capsules towards the toms not the bass or snare drum. Thank you! I am using the 2002 series but I bought them all individually.
The e602 mic on the batter side of the bass drum - do you have many problems with leakage from the snare drum? I've been messing with placing mics on both sides of my bass drum and would appreciate any help! Thanks -
@drulius Yes, there is leakage but in a good way. It's exactly just enough to enhance the snare sound. The trick is to reverse the phase on this mic. I get the bottom freqencies from the front and the high end "slap" from the one behind plus the added bonus of making the snare "crispier" and added depth.
Hey man. I was wondering how you went about getting that ludwig set. In late november early december I am finally upgrading my pearl forum set to a replica bonham set. You know the glass glitter green 14, 16,18, 26 set. I have been looking online but i have found most of them only come in the natural wood finish and i have always really liked the green but i have no clue as to how to go about ordering one just hit me back with some advice when you get the chance and as always keep rockin!
Hey Dan! I was wondering... I know you havent heard of Phoenix, a Romanian band also very popular in Germany. They have a great song called "Negru Voda". Their drummer called Ovidiu "Tandarica" Lipan is one of the best if not the very best from Romania! It has a great drum solo at the end... Maybe you could check this song out and if you could cover it. I would be very grateful if you could reply
Hi, thanks for sharing, the band sounds good. I have to tell you that my mom and her side of the family came from Romania, so I have Romanian blood in me! The other side is Croatian, that's where "Zalac" comes from. I was born here in Ontario, Canada and proud to be Canadian.
@GrooveDrummin I'm very glad to hear that! Back in the day, when Romania was a comunist republic, many people tried to run to different places... maybe this is your mothers case. When i was younger my grandmother told me stories about mu great great grandfathers. They were all legionaires and most of them had been to prison because they wanded a free country... The funny thing is that in my mothers side of the family there are only teachers and doctors... i dont even know how my parents met
Nice sounding mic. Don't forget that Bonham had the front mic dead center on the reso head. I was talking to Jeff Ocheltree a couple of years ago, and he told me that in the studio Bonham had the front mic dead center to get the most true sound of the bass drum head. Hope that helps. Keep Rockin' JOEDRUMS
Thank you! The capsule is pointing directly at the area where the beater impacts the head which is 13" up from the ground and on a 26" that's exactly in the middle, so that's what we have here. It doesn't look it in this vid because in fact it is lower than 13" BUT the capsule is angled upward so it is "looking" precisely at 13". I definitely agree to point mics at the center or at the impact area, applies to all drums. Thanks for the input!
@GrooveDrummin There's so many different theories about miking techniques. I read somewhere that you should never hit or mic the bass drum dead center, because it gets phase cancellations, at my sound school they told me that you get more lows miking towards the center and more harmonics towards the edges. The phase inversion has its own load of different theories. At the end, the tale is just the same: experiment for yourself and trust your ears.
The closer you get to the source the more lows, not necessarily in the center, but the center gives the most definition. A good practice to keep is not to have the capsule pointing flat to the source. That is why, as Joe had noticed, I have this new Rode mic lower than the middle but pointing upwards. The end really is in the sound. I have experimented with mics and sound for almost as long as I've been playing drums so I can speak from trial and error.
Hey man nice vid, nice sound too. About the snare. I've put 20 strand snare wires back on my 402, don't know why but i prefer it. What did John Bonham use on the How the west was won album? do you know?
probably the 20 strand you have is better quality than your 42. Keep what YOU like best because when you play, you'll feel more comfortable and not "gear checking" if it sounds ok.
that is a super natural sound, its pretty amazing really. that 26" kick would sound like a canon with a 4 in hole on the reso side, and a beyerdynamic m88 TG stuck in it. with the mm88TG stuck inside a few inches, that condenser mic about 1-2 feet in front of the kick drum, and the sennheiser still on the batter, that would be a epic kick drum track! haha, but its all in what your trying to achieve I suppose! beautiful kit man!
It will rip heads off when the reso is completely removed. I've never heard a bass drum snap like that. I should add that there is also a SM58 placed about 20 feet in front facing the opposite way.
@GrooveDrummin yeah man something about a big 26 it just has such a distinct sound. I have a 24 and It sounds like a cannon, but man that 26 is like "a big rock getting thrown into deep water". that sound the rock makes! that sucking sound. I love them! especially through a big P.A. with the right eq and compression! a cannon, that is all you can say, A big cannon!
I bought a cheapo camera mini tripod and tore the legs off so that I could mount to the joists above the kit...about 10ft up. Now it's adjustable and secure :)
@whitetooth96 : Pair of condensers has overheads and dynamic for the rest. U could use condensers for something else than overheads but its more difficult to control the sound because they pick up a lot more than dynamic mics.
condenser for cymbals or anything that needs an accurate high frequency response
and the dynamic is great for just about anything but can handle more "abuse". Sometimes a good dynamic will blow away a cheap condenser for example: The Sennheiser MD421 blows away most entry level condensers imo.
really nice sounding kit.

@emson1988 one would think so. But the NT1-A can actually handle some really high SPL.
