  • i've always liked tom petty, but when i watched "runnin' down a dream" and saw this segment, WOW!!, then after surfin' and finding the complete song, i've developed an even greater appreciation for tom! after the first time that watched it i remember looking at the rockpalast crowd and thinking out loud that "those kids NEVER seen anything like they're about to see!!

  • Mike should be turned up during during his solos, cause all I can hear is mr hashish plunkin away!!!

  • Love Ron Blair's bass solo, all the more incredible considering he had just swallowed an entire block of hash

  • <3

  • Tom's hair will never cease to amaze me

  • Fucking hell,Mike Campbell is a great guitarist

  • I've got a bootleg CD named'shout live' and there's this song!! magic

  • :31 Sorry tom but that was a fail :D

  • What an incredible song.

Secondarily, that look he gives at 0:20 makes me weak in the knees. So raw. Mmmph.

  • Better singer? Howie Epstein. Better bassist? Without a doubt Ron Blair.

  • Tom Petty= #1.

    End of discussion

  • Tom's guitar has a name...Red Dog! That and Ron Blair is blazed out of his mind 'cause he ate a whole bag of hash in Amsterdam earlier that day. :)

  • @ndrummerc

it was a chunk, not a bag

  • Darkhorsegirl--Thank you sooo much for posting this video, I watched it almost daily this summer!!! I seen that lil clip on the "Running" documentary, and just had to have this song.......lil did I know, this song is on the Best Buy edition of the "Live Anthology", on the vinyl, which I own, I just hadn't played it yet. So, EVERYBODY, go get that set, its fantastic!!!! Thanks again Darkhorsegirl!!!

  • gods they need to release this song. even if it's the only song on the album i'll buy it

  • godDAMN! This is hot shit! When was the last time you saw a great young band that sounded this good playing live. Stan and Ron shine on this! Not that Ben and Mike don't, but it just shows you what a great rythym section does for a song.

  • I used to have this on boot on vinyl, paid a fortune for it, pre internet.

  • The ONE person who disliked this is a FOOL...

  • Can someone post the lyrics to this song?

  • @wildshovel---Well I was downtown waiting for my number to be called,

Seen you through the window, outside against the wall.

Its no lil? silly? secret, you dont want no one to know,

Your living in a high-rise trying to stay low.

I dont think you realize what one little kiss could do.

Id love to make you understand honey, why I cant get close to you.

Baby you better stop it, look at what you've done,

You try to keep me living like a dog on the run.--------Probably my favorite Petty song!

  • Whew -- Love how the shakey staggering intro is rescued by the incredibly tight Heartbreakers.

  • Drove from Phoenix to China Lake naval weapons range trippin on acid late night ... the desert looked like a mosiac painting, had to stop the car just to peruse the scene every two miles ... for awhile..lol back in 1973. Partner in crime Smokey slept the whole way thru... like a Dog on the Run.

  • The Dog was the only one that didn't smoke the Hash the night before... probably still running that Dog!!

  • HAH! That's why they called him the "Great White Hope" when this came out in the disco era

  • Why won't he re-release this song? I think there's a vinyl version on a live EP from the late 70's, but that's about it. I was hoping they were going to include it on the extra CD from the Runnin' Down a Dream documentary, but they didn't.

This song kicks major ass. The bass is just sick!

  • do you have a copy of this show?

  • I love that Mike is still wearing a shirt he got in Amsterdam from the day before. Classic Heartbreaker video from first tour through Europe.

  • Darkhorse, this is the greatest....Vintage, absolutely...Before the fame, during a period of creative self discovery. And all this during the (gasp) Disco era. Them boys had some cahunas to buck the system. Bucked the system their whole career. I jam to this one all the time...Bravo.

  • This is a wicked good tune. I have never heard it before in the long version.

  • I'm mentionning that song in my next article ;-)

  • the verse ended up in "I need to know"!

    cool jamming middle part...

  • this songs a true rocker!! the Heartbreakers are too cool!

  • darkhorsegirl you never seem to fail with the heartbreakers

  • fucking awesome.

Ron Blair was completely out of his mind on hash here and he still performed awesme!

  • Yeah we've seen the movie

  • If only you knew the smile that this video brought to my face. I needed to log in and send thanks for posting it (and the others you have up on your channel)

I'd love to have this entire rockpalast show. Love that swampy sexy sound the HBs had going on in the 70's. No one else quite compares

  • This song is from a Tom Petty bootleg that got LA radio airplay in the late seventies on KMET & KLOS, mostly "Route 66", "I Fought The Law." There were eight incredible songs on the bootleg. When the record label's "official" live record was released it seemed to pale to those eight live tunes. I wasn't a fan again until "Long After Dark", and then, "Let Me Up, I've Had Enough."

    Is Al Kooper Home?

  • I have only found this song on $65+ copies of the "official live 'leg" LP. Does anyone have a file to download as well as a tab?

  • I freakin love this band!

  • Is that an ebow?? In 1977???

  • ya i'm pretty sure the date is wrong, this song is from southern accents which came out in 1985

  • No, this song is different from "Dogs on the run" from southern accents. The lyrics are totally different. Actually, the Ebow was invented in 1969, so it's possible he used one in '77...

  • ya mike campbell ( the lead guitarist) got a few grand to promote it

  • nice, it was inveted in like 1969 tho. I wikied it;]

  • I think Steve Hackett from Genesis used it in 1973-4 so i guess, but i was initially quite shocked too...

  • I love this song and vid, i just wish mike's guitar was a little louder...

  • I think this is the video where Ron Blair just chow downed a few grams of hash and is freakin' high as a kite? RIP Howie but I like Rons playing better.

    Thanks for this video post...nice.

  • fer sure. I like rons playing better, too. but Howie was an amazing singer.

  • yea. Tom said he loved the high harmonys he could produce.

  • I've been looking everywhere for this thanks for posting!

  • Groovy!

  • I Have the mp3 for this if anyone wants it. Just message me.

  • hey could i have that mp3 fer my ipod. i'd really appreciate it. thnks.

  • could you toss a copy my way?

I want my band to learn this one but some of them are PC illiterate...so.....

    Thanks!

  • hey, if you still have that mp3 i'd love to download it. let me know. thanks.

  • Lest I didn't explain in the late seventies bootlegs were on lp vinyl, which I acquired legally mind you, as I stated radio stations often played those tunes then. It was considered promotion anytime a group was played or mentioned in car home or elsewhere? Now, I don't know...

  • please anyone where can i find this song????

  • Hmm? I don't think they recorded it in the studio if that's what you mean...

  • It was never released. You can find it on some bootleg (don´t ask me, which one, I can´t remember....)

  • @darkhorsegirl ya they did its on the southern accents album

  • @motleycrue24 There's a difference between "DOG on the Run" and "DOGS on the Run." Listen to the two. They sound nothing alike.

  • @darkhorsegirl haha well excuse meee....

  • @motleycrue24 lol

  • @darkhorsegirl That's been established. But where can I find this freakin' song!!!???

  • @darkhorsegirl you are correct my friend! I love this song.. I have an mp3 audio of this exact version and performace :) Its f'ing raw american rock n roll to say the least!!

  • @k1ll3rm1k3 it's on the official live leg record (recorded at Paul's Mall I think)

  • I spent all weekend last year trying to find this on the internet after watching Runnin Down A Dream the movie

  • MAGICAL

  • This is awesome. Saw this on the Runnin' Down A Dream DVD but only the first couple of minutes in shown. Where is this footage from --is this on DVD?

  • It's from a concert they did in Germany in 1977. Rockpalast.

  • Thanks --I did find that DVD on the web last night. Think I might have to order it.

  • Thanks for uploading this! I love it!

  • Oh my my oh hell yes!

    Rock it Tom!

  • Thanks for adding this! :D

  • Thanks for posting!!

  • Mighty fine !
