i've always liked tom petty, but when i watched "runnin' down a dream" and saw this segment, WOW!!, then after surfin' and finding the complete song, i've developed an even greater appreciation for tom! after the first time that watched it i remember looking at the rockpalast crowd and thinking out loud that "those kids NEVER seen anything like they're about to see!!
Darkhorsegirl--Thank you sooo much for posting this video, I watched it almost daily this summer!!! I seen that lil clip on the "Running" documentary, and just had to have this song.......lil did I know, this song is on the Best Buy edition of the "Live Anthology", on the vinyl, which I own, I just hadn't played it yet. So, EVERYBODY, go get that set, its fantastic!!!! Thanks again Darkhorsegirl!!!
godDAMN! This is hot shit! When was the last time you saw a great young band that sounded this good playing live. Stan and Ron shine on this! Not that Ben and Mike don't, but it just shows you what a great rythym section does for a song.
Drove from Phoenix to China Lake naval weapons range trippin on acid late night ... the desert looked like a mosiac painting, had to stop the car just to peruse the scene every two miles ... for awhile..lol back in 1973. Partner in crime Smokey slept the whole way thru... like a Dog on the Run.
Why won't he re-release this song? I think there's a vinyl version on a live EP from the late 70's, but that's about it. I was hoping they were going to include it on the extra CD from the Runnin' Down a Dream documentary, but they didn't.
Darkhorse, this is the greatest....Vintage, absolutely...Before the fame, during a period of creative self discovery. And all this during the (gasp) Disco era. Them boys had some cahunas to buck the system. Bucked the system their whole career. I jam to this one all the time...Bravo.
If only you knew the smile that this video brought to my face. I needed to log in and send thanks for posting it (and the others you have up on your channel)
I'd love to have this entire rockpalast show. Love that swampy sexy sound the HBs had going on in the 70's. No one else quite compares
This song is from a Tom Petty bootleg that got LA radio airplay in the late seventies on KMET & KLOS, mostly "Route 66", "I Fought The Law." There were eight incredible songs on the bootleg. When the record label's "official" live record was released it seemed to pale to those eight live tunes. I wasn't a fan again until "Long After Dark", and then, "Let Me Up, I've Had Enough."
No, this song is different from "Dogs on the run" from southern accents. The lyrics are totally different. Actually, the Ebow was invented in 1969, so it's possible he used one in '77...
I think this is the video where Ron Blair just chow downed a few grams of hash and is freakin' high as a kite? RIP Howie but I like Rons playing better.
Lest I didn't explain in the late seventies bootlegs were on lp vinyl, which I acquired legally mind you, as I stated radio stations often played those tunes then. It was considered promotion anytime a group was played or mentioned in car home or elsewhere? Now, I don't know...
@darkhorsegirl you are correct my friend! I love this song.. I have an mp3 audio of this exact version and performace :) Its f'ing raw american rock n roll to say the least!!

Secondarily, that look he gives at 0:20 makes me weak in the knees. So raw. Mmmph.

Better singer? Howie Epstein. Better bassist? Without a doubt Ron Blair.

Tom's guitar has a name...Red Dog! That and Ron Blair is blazed out of his mind 'cause he ate a whole bag of hash in Amsterdam earlier that day. :)

@wildshovel---Well I was downtown waiting for my number to be called,
Seen you through the window, outside against the wall.
Its no lil? silly? secret, you dont want no one to know,
Your living in a high-rise trying to stay low.
I dont think you realize what one little kiss could do.
Id love to make you understand honey, why I cant get close to you.
Baby you better stop it, look at what you've done,
You try to keep me living like a dog on the run.--------Probably my favorite Petty song!

Whew -- Love how the shakey staggering intro is rescued by the incredibly tight Heartbreakers.
