  • I have to agree with some of the other comments below. Those fighters back in the day where "fighters" in every sense of the word. Many times Sugar Ray Robinson fought 3 fights in a MONTH. These guys today you can't even get into the ring twice in a year. And they'll want 100's of millions just to do that.

  • Fighting a bunch of flatfooted boxers. He is a legend, but I think Ali, Leonard, Mayweather would give him the fight of his life or win.

  • So yes, he is p4p the best of his era, but at welterweight, i'm sure DLH, Trinidad, Whitaker, Pac, Mayweather, Leonard, Hearns, Duran all could have held their own against him. Whether they would win is all up to personal opinion

  • Not to say he fought a lot of bums. I'm sure they were tough guys, but the fact is not all of his opponents were championesque or hall of fame type fighters. Now grant it, I understand that he had to stay continuely fighting because of his money troubles, but most great fighters are lucky to have 4-5 hall of famers on their list. That's why Ray Leonard is held in such high regard. Although he only fought 40 times, he has names like Duran, Hearns, Hagler, and Benetiz on his resume.

  • @dennycrane11 Fighters of old were better in general than fighters of today.

  • A few things to point out. Although all the praises of SRR are well deserved, everyone talks like it can't be debated. He fought in an era where almost all fighters stood flat footed and always came forward. Even in these highlights, you can see openings for jabs and uppercuts to land on SRR. Another thing people don't recognize and probably don't know, if you look at a list of his opponents, he fought at least 15-20 guys on 3,4,5 separate occasions and alot of them had double digit loses.

  • Yeah guys mayweather sucks but hes undefeated. Funny how people bitch about him so much, i guess they ignore the fact that he would beat the shit out of you

  • Funny thing is, they didn't have the camera technology back then that we have today, so these clips still don't even show his true speed.

  • was ray part white? he has black skin but white features?

  • fighters today don't stack up on so many levels if pacuqiao, mayweather, de la hoya, and mosley would have fought robinson, ike williams, and armstrong. it would have been the end of de la hoya, pacquiao, mayweather, and mosley careers.

  • Oh yea I didn't mention the iron chin. I don't think he was ever knocked out in 200 fights... Damn

  • G.O.A.T period. I'm 27 years old and a huge boxing fan. Loved all the Sugars but Robinson had everything. Deadly puncher, super speed, heart of lion and he would always put on a show. There will never be another but I'm grateful for videos like this because they give the younger generation something they will never see in there lifetime. Thanks for the video

  • There is NO WAY that Mayweather would come any where near SRR. Sugar Ray Robinson is well outta his league and any other boxer's league. This guy was a beast, a machine, a destroyer. He didn't duck any challenges like the so called champions are doing right now e.g. Floyd Mayweather. Mayweather can proabably go 12 rounds, 15 tops if the rules allowed it. SRR could probably fight 50+ rounds (not like he would need to with Floyd Mayweather anyway). SRR is the number one p4p fighter of all time SNM

  • iron man iron fist

  • that is what we missing in the modrn boxing ...... boxing is dying

    man

  • did Mayweather click dislike to this video ?

  • @oneleggoalie LOL probably.

  • @oneleggoalie why the mayweather hate? damn, you cant compare most fighters to sugar ray robinson. that doesnt mean everyone's a bad fighter.

  • @PDMvidz ...hate is a rather unfortunate word to use but the brother doesn't encourage a whole lotta love with his evasive persuasions.

  • @oneleggoalie well theres alot of people that would say the same thing about ali.

  • @PDMvidz ...rather different don't you thinks ? after all, ali was in black and white, could talk, did Thriller in Manila, danced in slow motion, soaked up so much hurt we felt it.

  • @oneleggoalie what difference does it make that ali was in black in white. did you watch thrilla in manila in black in white. the point is that its alot of so called fight fans that hated and stills hates on ali because he talked shit and just like mayweather he backed it up. im not comparing fighting skills im comparing the similar criticism that they both take.

  • @PDMvidz ...point taken. however, you seem rather partial to Mayweather given he is obviously of an odious disposition and style...i do like to see fighters give and take prodigious amounts of punishment. makes the sport..." noble. "

Thriller in Manila was grainy coloured...almost black and white.

  • @oneleggoalie the whole purpose of boxing is to hit and not get hit. mayweather has mastered this. however he does take punishment in certain fights (De La Hoya fight and Jose Luis Castillo fights). do you really think that floyd is going to sit down and just say "you know what im going to take punishment from this guy and try to make this a slug fest". No, he is going to go out and out-box the guy and fight is fight. slugging isnt his style, thats not what got him a 41-0-0 record.

  • @PDMvidz ..we could go on ad infinitum and still come to no conclusion. My position is Mayweather is odious and the fight game is giving and taking punishment for the great ones. Ali would not have gained his lofty status if he had gone on dancing without the hurt. We should end this after you've had your final word. And well met.

  • @oneleggoalie Im going to end it by saying that the only reason Ali gave stopped dancing and gave and took punishment is because he was past his prime and his legs gave away. therefore he had to take alot of punishment. trust me, if he had his young legs against frazier or foreman or norton, he would have did his traditional dancing without the hurt. lets be honest, nobody but a crazy man WANTS to get hurt. especially when your skills are good enough to keep you from getting hurt. well met.

  • @PDMvidz Different things, work for different fighters. The art of boxing to his and not get hit. But for other fighters, it's hit and get hit some more.

A fighter who avoids punishment, is a coward. But Floyd has never really avoided punishment. He can box, but he can also take a lot of punishment, and still dominate a fighter. He's only managed to avoid taking punishment in his prime, because of his incredible boxing ability. But when it's time for him to fight, he fights!

  • @oneleggoalie Pernell Whittaker and Willie Pep are considered to be some of the greatest fighters of all time. And they avoided punishment.

  • Ray what can be said that has not been said before.

You were the best middleweight boxer of all time in life and a legend in death.

Your record speaks for itself and their will never ever be another Sugar Ray.

  • THis is a great tribute. Why is it impossible for me to view it on my Iphone?

  • fuckin hell what's with the "music" sounds like a woman getting murdered! someone shut that bitch up!

  • I think too little credit is given to Jake LaMotta; although Sugar Ray is the greatest of all, LaMotta stood before him! look at him defying this legend that is Robinson! Much admiration to both of these two great men.

  • i can see who muhammad ali most enulated, his offensive styles really similar to robinsons

  • there is only one sugar ray. he is hands down the greatest fighter p4p to ever live. screw mayweather he cant even hold sugar ray robinsons jock strap. if ray robinson was around today he would clean out the welter weight and middle weight division in no time. he would wipe the floor wit all of 'em easy. from manny to floyd and anyone else in between.

  • My 3 favorite boxer , Ray robinson , he is fast , strong , he has technic

Rocky Marciano , i know poeple said he only beated joe louis because he wasnt in his prime but ...louis was rocky idol and rocky had a big heart , a lot of poeple like me think he carried him . and finaly for being an awsome boxer and for being a boxer that passed to the history , joe louis

  • lol it's funny my favorite boxers are the same but in the 4 position there is joe walcott ; )

  • Nowadays there is a boxer very seemed to sugar, that it can come do history as .. not ablo of other one that is not yuriorkis gamboa, I believe that yuriorkis has a few similar characteristics, but look at his videoes, regards

  • @ALCORCONBOY ye hes gud can see wer u get that from new about him b4 but the young cuban is definately one to watch

  • Is this man a machine, or what?!

  • I believe Robinson captured titles at lightweight, welterweight, and middleweight. There weren't as many weight classes back then.

  • this is random but if u start boxing @ 18 which I did and fight your first fights @ 19 and u show talent, u cant be a pro champion but u cud make it big in the olympics... rite lol

  • @upurs323 WBC champion Sergio Martinez started boxing at 19. Now he is one of the top middleweights in the world. Hard work, and dedication pays off.

  • @upurs323 sonny liston started way later than that i think. so did dwight muhammad qawi.

  • Damn that hurt to see ray robinson in his casket.. I shulda never watched this

  • Eh, we won't have 63000+ people viewing us in our caskets, bro.

  • This vid is incredible. From the quality of the footage, to the commentary, to the music..Its all magnificent, something every SRR fan should watch. Thanks for posting!

  • Now that man punched with bad intentions! GOAT indeed.

  • rest in peace!!!! dark assasin

  • The music in this video is pretty. What are the names of the songs?

  • great tribute man nice vids keep it up

  • Awesome video thanks for sharing it with the fight fans who truly appreciate great boxing when they see it!

  • rat Robinson is the baddest MF of all time not fucken Floyd Mayweather. Mayweather is a fraud compared to Robinson.

  • @soloboxeo1 but floyd is a hell of a fighter. one of the best was aaron pryor tho.

  • 0:32

  • People are seriously arguing Mayweather vs Robinson? hahahaha, you think the guy who ducks the likes of Paul Williams, Shane Mosely, Antonion Margarito, Miguel Cotto, and so on would step in the ring with the GOAT. Fuck outta here with that bullshit.

  • stop arguing,

let this great man rest in glory!

  • Рэй Робинсон - Легенда.

Меня поразила статистика его боев. читал его биографию - Мурашки по коже. Мандраж всего тела. :-))))

  • I hate seeing the Sugar Man like that at 5:17 breaks my heart man :(

  • This is a great video that highlights the TRUE GREATEST POUND-FOR-POUND FIGHER of ALL-TIME. He did not shy away from CHALLENGES like CURRENT "CHAMPIONS" and fought with SKILL and HEART.

    Thanks for the video, Mariachi2.

  • Oops, a typo.

The TRUE GREATEST POUND-FOR-POUND FIGHTER of ALL-TIME.

  • hes a master of kicking ass

  • my grandad was sugar ray and turpin sparring patner for this fight. he was also fighting on the under bill. he would get a weeks wages for sparring a round. sugar ray asked my grandad how much tupin was paying him and told him i pay more .but my grandad turned him down .because he wanted to help turpin becouse he was british .he also sparred hundreds of rounds with suger when he toured europe with him fighting on the under bills . .

  • Dam i just came back from seeing some youtube videos about ufc, mma and that cain of stuff, i dont know why i got there, i guess i was curious about the all thing, i didnt like it, i saw that any guy can win a fight over there, also i watched a bunch of guys with no technique, a couple of bumbs who just became fighters, worried about their tattos, hair collor, their entrance, jewllery, and how their shorts look like, again, am glad i came back to this, the sweet science, the soul of the sport.

  • are use jokin or wat robinson would destroy any fighter of today he faught the best of the best of his time money wansnt a facotr our days all boxers do is duck each other and only fight for money i luv mayweather and all the other great champs but compared to robinson they have nothing he has way to much power and even more speed not to mention the flurries and combos he could throw and end a fight before you could blink

  • sugar ray, rest in peace, you were a brilliant man...

  • El mejor libra x libra de todos los tiempos rapidisimo y letal pero tambien ha destacar a LaMotta que fue el rival mas duro y al unico que no pudo tirar a la lona pero aun asi Ray Robinson es el mejor

  • awesome, never ko lamotta though

  • Damn Jake LaMotta!!! He just won't go down!!!

  • There is no boxer in recorded history with a stronger chin than Jake LaMotta

  • A very good fight would have been Robinson vs the Duran that fought Leonard in Montreal in that first fight. Do any of you see a KO there or does it go 15??

  • I see a hell of a fight, but I don't think it goes 15. Im leaning towards robinson, but Duran was a absolute monster from the montreal fight.

  • I'm gonna say Robinson either via close decision win or a late stoppage. Duran would take risks so a stoppage is possible.

  • C,est un video historique qui nous renseigne bien sur quel boxeur etait le meilleur de tout les temp. merci mille fois.

  • just look a that 7 punch comination at 1:30 pound for pound the best ever!,it makes me made when fighters like mayweather talk about being the best pound for pound, being the best pound for pound is not just about jumping through weight classes and beating class b fighters, look at ray and the term p4p is self explanitry just by watching this great man!

  • i think exactly how u do...but i have to admit i have some respect for pacquiao...

  • I agree with you. But I do think Mayweather would give Robinson fits with his own speed and defense.

  • Mayweather who was getting hit by judah and castillo? You severly underestimate Ray who is bigger, and could probably break mayweathers arms with his punches and certainly find floyd's chin

  • I'm not saying Robinson wouldn't beat Mayweather. All I said was that Mayweather with his own awkwardness and speed and reflexes could provide alot of uncomfortable moments for Robinson.

  • Yea, mayweather probably could, more so a guy like sweat pea

  • I agree. I think Robinson would beat him, but Mayweather wouldn't make it easy for him. Robinson always had a hard time against fighters with great jabs, but I think he would beat Mayweather with speed, accuracy, and power punches.

  • Robinson Vs Mayweather is no contest!

Do you relize Robinson in his time beat the lightwieght champ in a non title bout then went on to dominate welter/middle wieght classes taking any compition presented and the few that had beat him by this piont he immediatley rematched and koed ending all questions. After dominating midle/welter he goes on to fight Joey Maxim for the light heavy title. A guy that would go on to fight Joe Luis (Best heavy wieght champ ever) and did good

  • Robinson not only was out boxing Maxim but also out classing him. He was 10-20 lbs lighter then Maxim and it was june the heat was 100+ the night of the fight the ref had fainted and they had to bring in a replacment. in the 14th round the fight was stopped becuase robinson was to exhausted to continue but he was winning on all 3 of the judges score cards. Had conditions been better robinson would have won that night. Floyd wont even fight Pual Williams nor half the other true middlewieghts!

  • Its like comparing a knife to a gun bro lol jajajajajajjajajajaja

  • Dude when Mayweather fought Castillo he was still a very young fighter and that was the biggest fight of his career.I thought he actually lost that fight but nonetheless the guy has never officially lost a fight, never has been knocked down and NEVER has had even a blackeye or a bruise hence the name pretty boy. No boxer had his type of defense! But to compare these two fighters is hard.

  • Mayweathers hardest fights were judah and castillo, I don't care how young he was, he never stepped up his competition beyond that, fuk his defence, skilled fast fighters were able to touch him a lot, even old de la hoya's jab was reaching him when oscar could throw it

  • The Dark Assassin

  • He was the best ever, hands down

  • Wow, what a fighter. Without a doubt in my mind the greatest fighter of all time.

You have to say as well, do you think La Motta was the toughest guy to ever step in a ring? He was taking shots that would KO most fighters and he just kept taking them!!

  • Sugar Ray - STILL the greatest of the them all. The king of the boxing ring.

  • holy shit he is amazing ...

  • i didn even know who sugar ray rob was,, but this video almost made me cry.. what va boxer... these olden times boys were something else,, the had more fighting in them then boxing... when i fight boxers they strugle, but when i box them,, i strugle.. those guys where fighters first and boxers second

  • the best ever

  • This is the best sugar ray hl I've ever seen.

  • what a great video -- that's some of the best-shot fight footage iv'e ever seen, all grity and slo-mo,i felt i was right there, back in time ,and the music and commentary coming in and just showing what a suave dude sugar was, playing music, dancing, with his kids, and the best boxer ever to boot, humble, with a sense of humour and style, but a beast unleashed when he got in the ring, pummeling people, and tough, too, the perfect textbook example of the art of boxing

  • the TRUE Master of Disaster..the Iceman from Harlem..SUGAR RAY ROBINSON..one of my boxing idols

  • 170-19-6 (108)... That's a record you're not going to see again with the 'I only fight twice a year' attitude of todays fighters. Ray was the best of an exceptional crop of fighters... power, speed, skill, good chin and heart and in 200 bouts never been KOd

  • it is a great record, plus he fought fighters from all over the world, including ones with a whole variey of styles.

  • R.I.P Ray Robinson

  • even mohammed ali said he copied SSR, just look at Rays double left hook and right uppercuts ali's was exactly the same, ali as a kid watched SRR and as a result had style very similar to him

but ali is the greatest of all times hes too much

  • Ali is not the greatest fighter of all time. He is one of the greatest, but not THE greatest.

  • RIP Ray Robinson

  • man...that final image at the end is so epic.

  • the bit at 1:12 coming back off the ropes after a hideing and fighting back like that is what makes boxing such a beautiful sport those moments in any fight make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up saying that what an amazing fighter Sugar Ray Robinson the greatest.

  • I take that back about mayweather going the distance with the sugar. Robinsons punches come too quick with knockout power in both hands with every punch. I dont know how long it would take but robinson would eventually and inevitably win by ko. floyd had trouble with castillo in their first fight. But robinson vs sweet pete (pernell whitaker) or arron pryor wouldve been a great fight but i stil say robinson by ud. Those are the only two fighters who actually stand a chance.

  • Well even back then fighters cared about money maybe even more because there werent as many oppertunities for a young man as there are today. If robinson met floyd at lightweight robinson by ud 119-108 floyds legs and defense would prevent him from getting knockedout in a 12 round bout if, it goes 15 floyd would either be knockedout or he'd retire. Robinson vs sweet pete at welterweight would be a great fight i still say robinson by ud but robinson at middleweight theres no competition.

  • I think that the ref didn't stop fights so easily in those days.

  • luv the pic at 4:10 two gr8 warriors and ali's speech which is pretty true. Such a good tribute man.

  • SRR at 31, had a record of 120-1-2, in his era guys were fighting like every 3 weeks, and were fighting 15 round fights. Srr had about 90 pro fights before his first loss. I would even mention PBF in the same sentence with this legend.

  • i can tell u now a a boxer that he is the greatest of all time and u fools that say ppl like mayweather would beat him or any of the old gr8s r idiots. Nowadays boxing is poor compared to this era as nowadays fighters only care bout $ like pretty boy but i tell you now i don't think they would be calling him pretty boy if he had fought SRR comp and had as many bouts as him thats for sure fighters today tho do have all this fitness guru shit and they still rnt as good as these guys fact.

  • Goat: SRR followed by ali

  • yup.the two greatest boxers of all time

  • how can you compare sugar ray to mayweather? sugar ray would k.o mayweather in 5 rounds tops, sugar ray was a boxer till he was 45 floyd is only 32, he will lose and he will lose badly, sugar ray fought out of his prime and still won.

  • not only the greatest fighter of all time but one of the greatest people of all time...a true legend.

  • I would bet sugar ray to k.o. anybody you can mention cuz these fights are sometimes days apart-boxing during his time was brutal and medieval-and he still managed to go something like 90 fights without losing-He has to be the best boxer of all time and its not even a close race-by the way if anybody could find openings on mayweather its him-and mayweather who is 5 inches shorter can't hurt him-Roy would be the closest but eventually it would come down to who could give and take the best

  • does anyone know where i can find the image shown at 4:09

  • would you take Mayweather over Robinson? I dont know....i honestly think it would be a close fight.

  • ask urself this...could mayweather go 15 rounds????

    robinson did

  • Mayweather trains to go 15 rounds. But I don't think he could stand up to Robinson's power. It might be a close fight, but Robinson would win because of his speed, power, combinations, and accuracy.

  • Wow I can't believe you asked that Mayweather's defense is outstanding and is probably next to Pernel Whitaker the greatest defense in boxing history ,but overall Robinson would destroy him , because Robinson had the PERFECT mixture of power, speed, and skill, only other boxer that comes close is Roy Jones in his "prime".

  • Robinson started as a light weight and because he was such a dominating fighter was forced to move up in weight class. He even ended up fighting for the Light Heavy weight belt ,but after winning most of the rounds collapsed in the 13th round due to heat exhaustion cause they were fighting outside with no sun protection. But today he would have won cause today boxers only fight 12 rounds. So robinson would have held the lightweight, welter weight, middle weight,& light heavy weight belt . thats P4P

  • nice vid. so vintage ^^ love it

now i know why he is the no1 boxer all time 5 star for u <333

  • They dont make people that tough anymore. Im just glad its all on tape... because words could never do this man justice.

  • They don't make them like they use too.

  • are you serious?sugar ray robinson would have destroeyd mayweather in the early rounds

  • I feel as though Sugar Ray Robinson would knock Mayweather out, but not with in the first 3 rounds. I think he could do it in the later rounds after he has figured him out a little bit and worn him down. I think Floyd would frustrate Robinson early on.

  • the greatest

  • fuck look how many punchs they throw.

  • Felicidades al creador del video¡ mis respetos a Sugar Ray Robinson.

  • #1 SRR

    #2 Ali

    #3 Louis

  • I wish there was still only one belt. Then there could not be paper champs like Nikolai Valuev. Fighters back then was alot tougher, had more heart and worked harder in the gym.

The best p4p off al times, Sugar Ray Robinson.

  • Seriously.. and they didn't tire and gas so soon, going hard and deep into the later rounds.

  • im 14 years old and im boxing whit 16 ounce gloves.sugar ray robinson number one in the boxing legends

  • AWESOME HIGHLIGHT..

    thanks

  • im a big mayweather fan but damn sugars combos were savage. also his chin was great

  • guys what u talkin bout PBF hasn't gone through what sugar went through fight nearly everyday of his life sugar would dismantle him sugar throws 5 punch combinations body and head and i don't don't pbf can do his philly shell then suagr would laugh at him before finishing him no contest don't forget castillo beat pbf

  • forget it, even if PBF was around back then, the fight would never happen. PBF won't even get into the ring with Margarito, Cotto, Williams. Im not doubting how good PBF is, i just want him to fight the best, which he has'nt yet. Robinson? NOBODY is in that guys class.

  • Mayweather has faught, and beaten the best at this point in his career. He's not hungry like he use to be, so boxing is not his number priority.

I hope he'll fight Margarito, but he really had nothing more to prove. And a fight between him, and Robinson would be a good tactical fight. I do give a bigger edge to Robinson, for the simple fact that he could hurt his opponents with both hands, and had lighting fast speed. Mayweather is fast, but doesn't pack as much power as Robinson.

  • why won't we see the likes of Robinson again? 1.Back then the sport was promoted more, every neighborhood had a gym or Y.

2.Money. People had less of it and there was more need for the sport. 3.Post-war era stressed team sports. 4.Funny to say but less Mob and more promoters/management equalls less fighters making more money.

5.Cable provides fewer venues and distances public from the sport.6.Brutal nature of the sport is not in favor w/polititians and public.

  • robinson would knock the fuck out of mayweather.. maywether would be try 2 show off dancing around then robinson would throw the left hook that he hit fullmer with and mayweather would be down for the count...well thats wht i think.

  • sugar ray would probably, but thats not fair 2 mayweather he is alot bigger than mayweather. sugar ray has never fought anyone with the speed and defense of mayweather, and the same goes 4 mayweather. i would pay 2 c it

  • Robinson has faught fighters who were as fast, and strong as Mayweather. Mayweather has never faced anybody like Robinson, and probably never will.

  • I agree Robinson would beat Mayweather. But in terms of pure skill, the only great 'boxer' that Robinson fought was Kid Gavilan, whom I also think would decision Floyd. I just don't see it as a walk over for Robinson. But there is no doubt the greatest welterweight and fighter of all time was Sugar Ray.

  • So how can you say the only great "boxer{" he fought was Gavilan? Gavilan would have destroyed Mayweather. On top of that Robbinson fought over 200 pro fights and there were several great boxers in there. There were many great punchers in there, there were several great boxer/punchers, which is where Robbinson himself would be categorized. Those guys were better than most of what's out there today, even if they paled in comparison to Robbinson. But today does have a good welterweight talent.

  • I think Gavilan beats Mayweather via decision as well. But it would be competitive because Gavilan did get hit. I don't think Mayweather would beat Robinson but I think his style would give him headaches and it would take Sugar a while to really figure him out.

  • I look to the fight with Judah as a hint of what Mayweather would get against Robbinson. Mayweather beat Judah handily. Yet for the 1st half of the fight Judah was strong and fast. He was a front runner as Floyd put it. but he was able to connect. Put Robbinson in there, faster, harder puncher than Judah, slicker, and you have a handful of problems for Mayweather. And don't forget Gavilan's power. He killed a man y'know with brutal head shots. Mayweather, gifted as he is, rarely throws in combos

  • I think you mean Robinson's power. He did kill a guy in the ring with some brutal head shots. Gavilan was not a huge puncher, on the other hand. All about volume with him. Zab had a little success early its true, but thats not the reason I think Robinson beats Mayweather. I just think that Robby's jab, and ability to hook off it, and the fact that he was a smart boxer would enable him to outbox the smaller guy in what would be a chess match I think.

  • No, I meant Gavilan. He killed Benny Peret live on television. He wasn't usually a one punch KO artist, but had enough to kill a man. I know who I mean. And the reference to Judah was to point out that Mayweather could be hit and quickness could give him trouble. Robbinson wasn't a pussy like Judah though and to Mayweather's credit when he figured Judah out he closed the door on him. But Robbinson had the killer instinct and I don't really think it would be a chess match. Robbinson stops him imo

  • Shit. I'm an idiot. Emile Grifith killed Benny. My bad. But Gavilan was still a pretty good puncher. And those guys were so damn tough back then too. Guys nowadays spend 20 years on a career that spands 40 fights, y'know? back then they'd fight 40 fights within a couple years.

  • Back in those days, particularly the 30s and 40s, they would fight with 6 ounce gloves, compared to today where its 8 ounces if your a welterweight.

Back then these guys were indeed real fighters, fighting 6-8 times a year, with some being non title bouts. Plus it was 15 rounds and same day weigh ins which I wish they'd go back to.

  • Yeah, I miss 15 rounders. I understand why they cut it to 12, but 15 rounders were awesome. But studies showed that by the time a well hydrated fighter reached the 15th he was pretty much dehydrated. Then the fluids surrounding and protecting the brain pretty much turned to gel instead of liquid, protecting the brain less and therefore causing more brain trauma. So I'm afraid the 15 rounders are gone for good. Emanuel Steward mentioned a couple weeks ago how he wished they'd bring back 15 rds.

  • I guess there is a right reason for doing 12. But 15 rounders were the shit. I still say that they should do same day weigh ins and put a limit on how much a fighter can gain after weighing in because these size mismatches are too much.

  • Yeah, and I think it would make fighters fight in their natural weight class. Once a guy out grows his weight class he should move up. Same day weigh ins would stop some of that dehydrating shit, at least to an extent.

  • The fighters were just tougher back then. Mostly because they were more disciplined and not as spoiled. Because there was just 1 belt back then in every division, you not only had to win but you had to fight the best and BEAT the best, thus making these guys train harder and not allow themselves to blow up 40 pounds in between fights. Thats why same day weigh ins worked back then.

  • Good point. That's precisely why leonard insisted on getting Duran back in the ring so quickly after Duran beat him. he knew Duran had a habit of blowing up to about 200lbs after a fight and most of his time in training would be shedding weight. Leonard just stayed in shape and a few months later beat Duran easily. They offered Duran so much money that it was worth it to fight Leonard so quickly again. Duran liked to party after fights and always had to drop weight.

  • Duran was noticeably out of shape in the rematch with Leonard. It was after that fight that Duran more or less lost the hunger that made him great. Back then because fighters were more active fighting up to 10 times a year, their training camps were shorter but because their weight was in check, they could just focus on conditioning, knowing they had to fight 15 rounds.

  • yeah he may have lost his youngster hunger but he still came back and won 2 more world titles, which says alot, one of the greatest definitly

  • According to this book by mike silver most serious boxing injuries actually happened before the 12th round, so all in all i'm not sure how much cutting 3 rounds actually helped. unfortunately i agree with some of the old school experts who say fighters today get hurt just as much despite fighting less just cause more and more fighters are neglecting defense, and aren't getting trained in it as much as before.

  • Robinson would have koed Mayweather between 2 to 3 rounds. Judah was no Robinson. Wake up guys.

  • I too think Robinson at his best beats Mayweather. I'm just not sure about KOing him that soon, that easy.

  • no offense brother but ... all i know is sugar ray robinson is the guy who they named the "picture perfect punch" after.. his left hook is in the world book encyclopedia :D but your right mayweather hard to hit.. who can really say what would happen? :-/ all i know is it might be fun to watch if we had the chance...

  • To KO somebody you have to hit them clean and often enough. Robinson would win because of his pressure and his speed advantage. But KO Mayweather??.. He would have to land a perfect punch.

  • defo the greatest ever cant believe how good he was and i feel stupid now because i used to say floyd mayweather was the best

  • hahah robinson is a baitor... and someone like mayweather could easily be knocked the fuck out by robinson. don't be fooled by his seemingly "wild" punches he is very much in control of his opponents in my opinion. :D

  • you know........ im watching these clips and of course they are highlights but it looks like.. no matter what the opponent does sugar ray robinson has an answer for it. no way around him it seems...

  • just so damn graceful to watch his hands fly...

  • a different breed of humans back then, all of'em

  • i agree alot stronger, body and mind, today

we got alot of pussys that would gang up instead of 1 on 1. like it should be.

  • hehe that's a very romantic way to view the world today, sadly; most in the world has never been that brave.

  • armando what an idiot you are thinking floydmayweather could beat robinson. you DONT know boxing

  • armndo wtf are you going on about robinson was faster, stronger, rougher, smoother, harder chin, more aggressive and would knock mayweather clean out. ps mayweather struggles to beat a much over the hill oscar de la hoya

  • That's probably true. Plus, Robinson was knocked out guys who were bigger then him, while Mayweather just boxes to a decision victory. Nothing wrong with that, but you can see who would win based on punching power alone. And that would be Robinson.

  • Mayweather didn't struggle with Oscar, despite what one blind mouse saw. But be that as it may, Robinson would still have a difficult target to hit in Mayweather with the kind of punches he would need to score the KO.

  • hey faggot ass, u think gayweathers so great cuz hes just 39-0-25kos ,robinson was once 93-0-79kos ,so there, tha record speeks 4 it self

, it wont even b a fight but a total enialation

  • look at robinson's fucking chin! look at it! hes taking a fucking beating for like 30 seconds straight then comes back with knockout combinations like nothing happend 1:11

  • im in awe of this guy
