  • I was having trouble with the sidechaining. The wobble just sounded distorted, muddy and generally crap. I then tried a snare sample randomly and suddenly it worked. So yeah i have no idea whats going on.

  • what program is that??

  • if you click on your maelstrom then shift click on your compressor you will select them all, then you can duplicate ohem in one go and most of the wiring is done for you. pro tip.

  • I love how everyone's like 'ugh, Jump Up's for pussies' (I have no idea why your now Napoleon Dynamite..) but Jump Up Drum and Bass is Drum and Bass that makes you want to Jump Up and Dance (unsurprisingly) therefore, quite a lot of Drum and Bass these days can be classed as Jump Up.

    Just saying.

  • jump up is fuckin woobles like aphrodite

  • HI killed me !!!

  • love how you said HI in the beginning haha

  • Dear Dave from boy in band,

After this tutorial I have some stereo issues with my 2 malestrom basses.

It somehow warps from left to right(and I assume it is kinda mono), and my basses are constantly pushing the volume limits.

Is that maybe the diffrence between reason 4 and 5?

  • @TiasNL

    Dear Dave,

I solved the stereo problem by using a stereo imager.

But the bass is still kinda muddy, and compressed.

It also likes to compress the rest of the mix.

    Any Ideas?

  • tasty bass, because its delicous :D:D:D :L made me laugh s much :L

  • Adding the Compression to the Sub makes it distort wildly, any tips?

  • this just sounds like normal 2011 drum and bass. jump up now is simple. dirty basslines. as an example search Turno - Dreams or Macky Gee - Chatham pocket. these 2 tracks are what jump up is now. not uplifting or anything like that

  • i found that if you made the bass less crunchy it sounds better.

Also on the compressor of the THOR, if you turn it down from "infinite" to 3.00:1 (ish) the sub is a lot more prominent over the higher-end bass, which i think also sounds a bit better :)

  • DAVE DAVE DAVE!

    - My sidechain dosen't work! The "Wob wob wob" effect dosen't work!!! What should i do!! Help!! It dosen't work with the "First Pad" either! And i used the Spider Audio Splitter.. i don't know what to do, my bass is all like: 8:10

  • @FrederikMeyer Its because you haven't added notes in yet, add the sidechain kick in and youll get the effect :D !

  • you side chaining the bass to what?

    snare track or kicks?

    bit of a noob

    sorry

  • @munyafiction lolo you know that you have sidechain basses to the kick?

  • @Tr0ll321 yer mate done that already but it just wasnt as pumpin.i use a different daw but that should not be a problem.

not the kinda bassline i wana make though.wanna make growling basses similar to Pleasure,Turno,Decimal Bass, the old Sensa etc

    thanks for the help

    ez

  • Annoying thing about Side Chained basses like this is that you need a good distortion unit to make it sound good, FL doesn't come with anything nearly as good as scream 4 :D Are there any distortion units in VST form out there?

  • sorry its far from jump up !!! check out original sin or dj hazzard , dj taxman ect ,make some of that shit .....?? pads ?? jump up is just beats n bass hence the name DnB lol

  • Things I would do, to make your life easier:

when copying the graintable, just hold shift and selesct the device/s, then press 'copy devices blah blah'.

then, all you'd have to do is link teh compressor into a new channel.

BUT, instead of having a seperate compressor on each synth, put it after the line mixer at the top, so you only have to sidechain it once :)

  • Thanks a lot for actually going into some depth about the sidechain on the compressors, really helped me out :)

  • i was hoping for jump up thats more like DJ Hazard or Heist etc. i'd call this dancefloor personally. its not angry enough

  • @BakedNagasaki indeed =/ but still i found it quite interesting

  • Sounds like a Paul Kalkbrenner's bass, i cant remember the track id..

    Awesome!

  • 0:00 sounds like a girl

  • dont let the rabbit steal the bass

  • It's clear that this is a collab. Your workflow is very different and a bit weird tbh. why don't you just put a compressor after the mixer instead of different compressors? It will glue the sounds a bit better too. Also, putting your sub in the same combinator takes away some control, which is a bit sad. And lastly, if you're gonna sidechain with something that isn't actually playing, why don't you just work with a simple thor then? It gives you more control, being able to adjust the envelope.

  • @HamsterRapingBastard I think both of these things come from the fact that this patch is the basis for much of noisestorm's work (as said you can save it to use as a template). This way is more flexible. You could for instance not have all the bass duck, thus the individual compressors. And in other cases the kick may be heard, so the splitter would be run into the mixer too. Those options just weren't used this time.

  • I was wondering what the hell you were talking about when you said Dave will explain later. And then you transformed hahah You're hilarious.

  • did i just see "hey dave, can i reverse midi notes?" Fuck

  • propellerhead should improve the workflow in reason it seems. there are a lot of unnecessary clicks you always have to do

  • @Xo1ot1 Xo10t1 should improve the workflow in their brain it seems . there are a lot of stupid comments you always make

  • @FadedSTEELERSfan young you are, much to learn you have, aside from proper use of grammar

  • @Xo1ot1 i would also like a higher resolution work space

  • @Xo1ot1 Examples? If you mean initializing each device after you create it, that can be set as the default. If you mean running wires and turning knobs. That's what Reason it about, and I find those acts help solidify in my mind what I'm actually doing. While I love the sounds Thor makes, the arrows and little white lines are harder to follow then the gently swinging cables. Other things can be reduced by reusing saved patches, but that doesn't apply to a how to.

  • @Xo1ot1 however the fact that they've managed to fit everything in a 3rd of your screen is impressive )

  • @Xo1ot1 Yeah, it's not known for its incredibly fast workflow. It becomes cumbersome at times. The fun in the routing, though, can be very inspiring and just plain fun, resulting in interesting sounds and cool randomness.

  • How stoked are you about Reason 6? Because i nearly shit myself when i heard about it haha

Reason and Record all in 1, as well as a couple new toys to play with inside it haha

  • i <3 u dave :)

  • Dave, I hate to tell you this... But you have mail... :D

    ekol

  • that's fucking awesome!!1!

  • Cool! :D

QUESTION. that u might know the answer to.

can i reverse midi notes in reason ?

not as in reversing a wav, but like having the notes play the opposite way. lol confusing:P

ive tried google but not much there XD

    i have a feeling i can't :(

  • @DynastyUKOfficial Yeah, if you turn the computer monitor upside down while you're drawing them in that does the trick.

Nope, not that I know of.

  • @wwwboyinabandcom hahaha. was thinking a mirror and some extreme patience :(

    cheers for da reply XD

  • @wwwboyinabandcom the only way your going to do that quickly is to draw your pattern backwards, export the loop as a wav file, the resample using nn-xt. you can set the loop from there to play in reverse

  • @wwwboyinabandcom haha i don't care how odd and corney your humor is... your a funny guy and talented.... thanks for the tutorials.... cheers

  • @wwwboyinabandcom pirates suck

  • @DynastyUKOfficial You could bounce the notes to audio by themselves, then reverse them as audio.

  • @DynastyUKOfficial if your running an lfo on your cutoff or pitch then put a saw lfo with the -1 at the beginning and the +1 at the end. its hard to explane but i think you can figure it out

  • @DynastyUKOfficial

    Hi!

I left you a private message as i couldn't fit all in a comment, and didn't want to spam Dave with 4 comments! if you found this helpful, then i will post a simplified response here :)

To everyone else, in the mean time, if you would like to know what i sent DynastyUKOfficial, please feel free to message me :)

    Thanks!

  • @DynastyUKOfficial You could reverse all the envolopes maybe?

  • @DynastyUKOfficial Hey mate, I'm having trouble with that too, but the NN-XT Sampler can play notes backwards... I thought maybe you didn't know that yet.

When you open up the Remote Editor you see al your samples and a few twist knobs too. You cannot touch those, unless you selected some of your samples. So first just click in the sample box and hit cntr+A (select all). Then go to the knob that says FW and turn untill it says BW (backwards) :D

Good luck, and check out my music!

    Q

  • Yay more DnB... too bad I have to miss most of it... I'm going to make it with the dirty reese, more old skool darkstep vibe.
