Well those online services kinda died out when the Internet got popular. Most services offered additional media from CD-Roms. For example you had ther German KIT which was based on Bildschirmtext. Lots of people have tried it, but in the end the Internet with it's open structure simply won.

Those old services were walled gardens with very limited content.

Actually in 1996 online services were already dying and typically mostly used to get onto the Internet.

I'm from Australia and I remember getting this in 1997. I had no idea wat it was and why I couldn't connect to it. It was just recently when I looked up something completely different that I noticed that actress was anna faris.
