The British, by giving the Church and Crown a very specific role in the State managed to completely neutralize them. The Anglican Church is pretty ineffectual, like a kindly but slightly nutty old Aunt. Unfortunately the US just let the religious nutjobs get on with it any way they wanted, and now 40% of American citizens think the world is 8,000 years old, max. Oh dear.

@ritchloui I don't eat in front of them out of respect, but they know. My dad is one of the most conservative Muslim men around, but I can hold proper arguments with him, and of course he succumbs to his stubbornness toward the end. But saying "If there was nothing to fear from Islam how come so many ex-Muslims have to go into hiding?" is an inaccurate assumption. I personally know 4 ex-Muslims who are still on good terms with their families.

Before criticizing islam, how about looking in the mirror and reflect on what you allow your governments to do every day. Israel was of course part of the Ottoman Empire for several hundred years. The British Mandate for Palestine 1922 makes very interesting reading, especially Article 15. The Islamofascist demand for Islamic supremacy made it impossible for the Arabs to tolerate such a fair constitution.
