nice idea with the tutorial but the time left to read the tutorial is way too short - no real fun watching the vid if you can't read it all and have to pause the time, it takes away the flow:(
Fix them? I am not sure what you mean by this? Fixation? Well, the wool felts to the other wool fibers, binding them together when you are palm rolling them with the soap and hot water... like if you put a wool sweater through the wash.
I got mine out of my hair just fine. After a while, they will start to felt to your natural hair (because all hair can felt... or dread... it is the same process. Some things just felt/dread easier than others) but it takes a while.
I bought mine from a seller on etsy (just search for roving wool, if you plan on dying it make sure you get white!), it wasnt all that much... under 20 bucks for 1lb if I remember correctly. I did buy it several years ago now, so prices may have changes. The nice thing about etsy is you can shop around!
@TRDreads As stated previously, I have had natural dreads in the past and I have natural dreads now. At some points, it is just not feasible to have real dreads, or if someone wants to try out a hair style, or if someone doesnt want to commitment that natural dreads entail, synthetic and wool dreads can fulfill that niche. I dont feel the need to put down random people or their choice in hair style.
They are just braided in like any other double ended dread. Do a quick youtube search and you should be able to find plenty of tutorials on installing them. :)
I have long black hair, and I just made a few to wrap in, then I did a few of those good old hair-wraps (the ones where you wrap a thread onto your hair) in grey and I stuck some greyish-white feathers at the ends, looked so amazing :o
Wool is hair. It is animal hair. Felting wool is the same process used to felt human hair... or dread it, except sheep wool is better at latching to itself than humans. Some people even make dread extensions out of human hair, but wool is easier.
I hate to break it to you, but synthetic, yarn and wool dreadlock extensions do exist. This is coming from a woman who has natural dreads right now (but who has also had synthetic and wool at different points in time). Just because some people enjoy having a temporary hair style doesnt make them any less legit than any other.
I bought a pound, but only used about half of it. I probably should have made them longer and that would have most likely used the whole pound of wool.
I have never tried twisted dreads with roving wool felted dreads, but I would imagine you could try felting a DE dread, then (leaving a loop for attachment) twist them together like you would a two ply rope, leaving a SE twisted roving wool dread. You would have to some how secure the ends... maybe needle felt them together? Let me know if you try this and how it turns out!
The soap helps the wool to lock up. Basically the wool texture is like little barbs, and the soap + hot water help those barbs catch on and stick to each other.
I normally wash my hair every other day when I dont have dreads in, and when I have dreads in I wash them about the same. The important things to remember when washing dreads is to use a shampoo that will not leave residues (either special dread shampoo or make your own). The chemicals that get left behind in most shampoos build up and create problems. When washing dreads, make sure you get the shampoo to the roots. I use a dollar store ketchup bottle (the ones with the small nozzle).
You need to use specifically roving wool of this technique will not work. It is what you would buy for either needle felting (but a lot of it) or if you were going to spin it into yarn.
well ehhhmm ..... xD i think i´m to stupid mine won´t look like yours T.T do i use the wrong wool? i tried it today with stuffing wool(for teddys etc.)
It depends on how well/tight you install them. As your hair grows you roots will show eventually, but all you need to do is tighten them up like any other kind of extensions.
great tuto and great dreads I have the same method for making mine, but I live in France you know some dying colors ? Because I don't find kool aid or acid dye. I use dye for clothes, but I stained my bathroom and the color of my dreads stay on my hands, I made them dried, but the tint which I use is not suited I think, thus if you know a means of the kool aid or another mark/brand (on the internet by example cause I'm french), it would be so nice to say to me where can I have it. Thank you !
This tutorial has helped me sooooo much! I was worried about making my own but it looks easier than making synthetic ones and ive done that!

Very light when compared with synthetic dreads of the same length, size and number.

It depends on how many you need for your head and how long. I say a pound is a good general estimate, but you may need more or less.

how much wool roving do you need to make a full head?

Could you please tell me how many grams of wool it took you to make this? I'd like to try! :D

Its really not hard, just time consuming. It can do a number on your palms though. They can get tender if you palm roll a lot all at once.

I'm really interested in making wool dreads, but I really need to find those kind of wools first.
by the way, would you mind explaining to me on what the soap does to the dreads?

Nothing much, just cut the roving the length you want and separate/split them if you want them skinner.

Well, here are some ideas on why your dreads may be falling apart...
Make sure you are using roving wool. Other wool may not work well.
When you put your wool into the hot water, just rest it on top and let it soak "down" into it. Try not disturb it as much as possible.
When you palm or lap roll, you have to go over the entire dread several times, depending on how well it is felting.
