Good price for the honda..Im looking for a honda..at a cheap price..not 800.00,so till then my Harbor frieght genny..works great for boondocking..If Need to run big stuff...Nice video
awesome.say you had this gen on a hot dog cart and you were talking to a customer.would it be to loud in your opinion. could you even cover it in a box of some type to lower it even more ? thanks
@dieselmac Sure you could build a quiet box for the HF generator, it would still stink since it's a 2 stroke. The Honda is quiet enough to have a normal conversation while it's running right in front of you.
@frontier1701 You can find them on sale for around $799. However you are right! it will work when you need it. By far the best little genny I have ever owned.
@vegasfordguy The HF generator is $90 bucks now with the coupon. I mean, honestly I would take the 90 buck one if you really didnt need it to power much and didnt use it for very long times. Just to have on hand and use for camping etc. Now if you were going to use it all the time, that might warrant the honda...or atleast a better built unit.
@SaGalv I agree that it's a decent buy for under $100 bucks. You just can't take it camping with you since it's too loud. The other campers would kick you out of the campground. The Honda is for this.
@vegasfordguy I guess it depend where you go camping...Im sure you could find a cheap way to quite this thing down well under the 700$ extra bucks for the honda
@SaGalv I'm sure you could. You could build a "quiet box" with a fan for circulation so it wouldn't run too hot, but then you would have a bunch more stuff to lug with you to your camping destination. Been there, done that and in the end it's just not worth it. The Honda is a one pull start machine that is very quiet and super reliable. Until you own one you won't understand. I got my Honda for a great price on our local Craigslist.
@vegasfordguy Eh, sure man. Like i said. If its something you use everyday, i can kinda see why you would go far the $700 one. For everything else, i would say the 90$ takes the cake. Obviously It will really lack in features compared to the honda, but for that much of a price difference and how much you end up saving I would learn to live with it.
@SaGalv I could live with it, that's not the problem. The other campers would toss it off a cliff. Folks at campgrounds don't want to hear a loud generator running. You have to be courteous to your fellow campers.
@vegasfordguy The kind of camping I had in mind didnt involve other peoples "campsites" anywhere near you. So i see what your saying. For you, this generator is perfect. . At my old house where ice storms took out power the 90$ one would be better, as our beat up coleman generator was much louder then that 90$ one and we never really ran big stuff with it, hell we could have bought like 3 of those lil generators one for each bedroom lol.
@SaGalv For boon-docking the HF genny would be perfect. I agree! Nobody around to bother. set the genny away from the camper, run a 50 foot power cord & call it good.
I think many are overlooking the fact that the Honda is an inverter generator, it will not damage computers and electronics, the HF unit can fry that kind of equipment. I've got a pair of Hondas that run in parallel, both use natural gas/propane/ or gasoline. They just work and are dependable, Would you buy a parachute at HF?
Let me start off by saying who ever says that HF generator is good and reliable and run for years bought it and never took it out of the box. You get what you pay for and you bought a turd. There a blue peace of shit !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@kt791266 Mine actually ran very well & was a reliable unit. Just too dang loud for camping. Other then the noise it is a good unit for the price. Sometimes the way people take care of there things makes a huge difference. I maintain all of my vehicles, power equipment, etc and it usually will last a long time. This has been my experience.
I have the H/F little generator and use it for camping. Put an insulated moving blanket around it on three sides and over the top, it gets plenty of air to keep cool and breathe, yet is soooo much more quiet. Run it at a sensable time and noone will hear it over the usual campground noise.
@5downer I can see how this would work. Some folks have also built a box that covers the gen with a vent on one side/small fan on the other to circulate air flow. I still say if you have the money get the Honda for sure, the BF unit is hard to beat for the price though.
@ryan1693 You would think this is true, I had a Generac 2000 inverter generator and believe it or not the HF unit was quieter than that horrible Generac, it was basicly a Honda copy but it was the loudest thing ever!
I only made this video to show how quiet the Honda is.
@kennjohnsen Yeah, You can get these HF generators for around $100 bucks. Despite the fact that they are 2 stroke & noisy they are very reliable & will run for years with proper maintenance. They have a 5 star rating.
Even if it blows up in five years, he can have 45 years of service for the same price.
Yet, it won't blow up if you maintain it. The Honda is the right one if you use the gen all the time at night, but the Harbor Freight is not a bad deal.
Honda only shines when it comes to long term efficiency and sound quality. But thats it. Its a foolish IMO unless you depend heavily on your unit. The Gen in the vid is a much much smarter buy after reading the reviews.
unitl you own the Honda EU1000i you won't understand. The HF unit is simply much too loud for use at a campground & that's where I use my generator at. You can't use the the HF generator at any campground as you would be asked to leave and risk having it tossed over a cliff by angry campers. Trust me on this. The HF genny is good to have for emergencies or to run small tools out in the field but NOT FOR CAMPING.
@vegasfordguy My dad has the EU 2000 version. Quiet low decibel machine i'll admit, but other than that its overpriced IMO. He's proud of it. But even he has to admit my little inexpensive machine can do everything his does. Just 40 deci higher. I'm not sure about the Harbor Freight, but I have pretty much the same unit here in the Virgin Islands and it works absolutely flawless. I use it to backup my office when the power is down (happens once or twice a week here in the VI).
@NBAGOATS I will agree with this. If sound wasn't an issue than I would use the HF unit. I like a great deal just as much as the next guy does. I have also tryed out the Generac ix 2000 and it's even loder than the HF unit, honestly it was a real piece of crap. The Honeywell 2000i (older version) a good value but it's much heavier than the Honda 2000. I agree that if sound isn't a factor then the HF is a great reliable unit.
@kennjohnsen The Honda has what's called "eco mode" The carburetor has an electronic throttle body on top of it which automatically adjust the RPM's to match the power usage. This also saves quite a bit of fuel. The HF generator doesn't have this same set up, instead it uses a regular governor like a lawn mower for example.
Compare the fuel efficiency and the Honda wins by a mile. The Honda is more than twice as fuel efficient, and you don't have to mix gas (which means it's cheaper per gallon, in addition to a gallon of gas lasting more than twice as long). Granted you can buy a lot of gas for 700 dollars... But other than rated power its apples and oranges (or Apple and Microsoft, if you prefer).
@gzmkt Yes, it is VERY fuel efficent. We just returned from a camping trip and I wanted to make sure my deep cycle battery was fully charged to run the heater during the night as it was down to 18 degrees overnight. I only put half a gallon of gas in the Honda & fired it up around 4 pm, I let it run until 10 pm and shut it off. It was still running. It's also so quiet that you could get away with running it on eco mode at night if you had too.
Actually no. The Harbor Freight will output a true sine wave since it uses a brushless AC generator. The Honda is making a low voltage which is rectified and switched through a solid state inverter which outputs a modified sine wave. Both have their place, but in fact the HF generator will put out a cleaner sine wave. The Honda on the other hand will have better frequency accuracy (60Hz) and is more fuel efficient and quiet since it can throttle RPMs depending on load.
@cartman1492 This generator produces very dirty power compared to the Honda. It's fine for power tools and such but I wouldn't think about plugging any type of valuble electronics. If you plug a 500 watt halogen work light you can actually see the change in brightness due to the fluxuating output.
@vegasfordguy I've looked at the output of the HF gen with my Tektronics TDS 3034 oscilloscope. There is very little dirty about the HF gen's output. It is a sine wave with fairly low THD, lower in fact than the Honda you've got there (which generates 120VAC from a DC-AC inverter). The only issues I can see are:
1.) You will get some droop when heavy loads kick on and off
2.) The frequency is not electronically regulated but mine is within a Hz or two of 60Hz
@vegasfordguy If your gen is surging and varying the output voltage on a 500W halogen, then you've got something wrong with your gen. Mine will run 300~600W worth of halogen lighting with almost no variation of the output RMS voltage, a couple of volts max. I see that kind of variation out of the utility's power all the time. Now, for a dynamic load like a large motor cutting on and off I would believe 5 to 10 volts difference in RMS voltage, but I assure you this is fine for modern electronics.
@cartman1492 I'm not saying that it's not a bad little gen for around $100 bucks. It just doesn't even come close to comparing to the Honda. There is NO way that I could ever run the HF gen at a campground as it's just too loud. The Honda on the other hand is so quiet that you can barely even hear it on the other side of the camper. I know it's 8 times as much money but it's worth it if you need it to be quiet and dependable. If I just needed to run a power tool then yes it's a good buy.
@vegasfordguy I've been using this generator here in the VI for backup when there are outages due to storms etc...I plug 2 computer systems into it along with a 19 inch flat panel monitor. Oh and the speaker system with my router and communications. I've been doing this for about a year and I haven't had any problems. I've read all kind of reviews and noone has reported any problems with this generator. Great value. And a true alternative to the more expensive units. Better IMO overall.
@NBAGOATS It's a good little generator for the price but it's much too loud for use at a campground. The Honda is a far superior unit but it will also cost you 7-8 times as much. I agree that for the price of the HF genny it can't be beat.
@ponyryda You mean quiet down the HF unit? If so then I think it could be made to be more quiet with an additional muffler but it still wouldn't be nearly as quiet as the honda. The honda is also fully incased in a plastic case where as the HF isn't & that raises the noise level as well. I still say for the $100 bucks the HF unit cost it really can't be beat.
