  • "Now this might be quite disturbing"

    -lol, love it!

  • Whoohoo! Thanks for this tutorial. I have a photoshoot with a 1920s theme and this is just perfect!

  • Could you please do another 1920s look, that era is hopelessly underrepresented in youtube-makeup-tutorials.

  • Thanks for the great video. I have a murder mystery dinner to go to in March and I needed ideas to get the make up right. Thank you so much!

  • Now that I'm studying make up I know this will come super in handy, so thanks so much Sam :D

  • I love the way you talk! You do make-up beautifully!

  • I love how you tell us the history of the makeup and looks! I adore Clara Bow.. amazing tutorial, as always!

  • @leannewoodfull leanne can you please make a new makeup tutorial?

  • @GaGaJunkie0 Why ask this on someone else's video?! I haven't made one in nearly a year, I don't do them - no.

  • Thankyou sooo much, im studying makeup at the moment, and im doing a friends makeup for her 1920's themed party, so thanks very usuful :)

  • That is cool! You look amazing!

  • love finding some of you guys older videos . . . doing my mums makeup for a dress up of this style tonight :D

  • still one of my favorites !!!!

  • You are overly critical of 1920s styling. The 1920s had brilliant styling, and I regularly wear looks from that era. It may not be universally flattering, but that can be said of every era.

  • LOVE LOVE LOVE this tutorial! GORGEOUS!

  • I wanted to thank you for this video! I used your tips for my makeup for a 1920s murder mystery party. I got so many compliments! Thank you so much :)

  • Using this for halloween :D

  • at 8:42 you look JUST like Khloe Kardashian omggg

  • you're so pretty i think i'm going to cry

  • This is brilliant! Thank you for posting this - I'm hosting a 1920s party tonight and this is definitely going to be of help(:

  • Sorry but i hate the eyebrows but the rest i luurrvvee

  • Used this to do my friends makeup for her 20's themed birthday party (along with the hair tutorial from ilovegerardo's channel) and it came out perfectly! Loved it, thanks.

  • Thank you.... love it....

  • Sam would've been a beautiful flapper :)

  • the eyebrows are totally wrong,in the 1920s the eyebrows were low straigt and slightly downward sloping on the outer ends. u have high arched eyebrows which are more 1930s(marlene dietrich/harlow-esque)

  • @tonyboyart she did slope them downward on the outside.. it's not going to be perfect cuz like you said her eyebrows are very arched

  • @CRICKET999999999 Damn girl, it's not that serious! Obviously being a shut in is doing wonders for your social skills.

  • @CRICKET999999999 You're trying too hard to be an elitist and it's quite transparent. On a hunch, I just Googled clara bow and this makeup is super spot-on, I don't know what you think you're talking about. Clara Bow (and all flappers for that matter), didn't wear the exact same makeup every day, and I think that this tutorial nailed the general look girls were going for at the time. What about it is so scandalously inaccurate?

  • You seem so different in these older videos, Sam. I don't know what it is, you seem so much more timid! I love this tutorial so much.

  • you're really talented!! well done!!

  • It's flattering if you do it right..

  • My lips are shaped like that all on their own. They aren't nearly as flattering on me as on you. Haha, you're too beautiful!

  • who was that makeup artist you mentioned? I looked him up but can't seem to find him. Maybe I spelled his name wrong.

  • @marshmellowmeltedass I think his name is Stefan Moret

  • I just tried this look at home for a fancy dress party on saturday night and it looks awesome!!!!!!! I had no idea how i was going to create a proper and historical makeup look and you really helped me, thank you so much!!! love this look!!!!!

  • I dunno, I think if you went out in public today with that much makeup on you'd look like a ghoul. lol

  • You kind of look like Drew Barrymore when you're done! :) I loved this so much.

  • @xxKLftw It's funny you should mention that! Drew Barrymore's grandmother (Dolores Costello) was actually a 20's silent film star, like Clara Bow.

  • You did such an amazing job i just did a clara bow tutorial too, im not too sure about it but tell me what you think? :) well its obviously not as great as yours but i wanted to do a video on it because i love history and makeup! Go check it out please! :D

  • She keps saying it's not flattering, but I think it's quite flattering. And it looks very glamorous. Love it!

  • Not the most flattering? I think it's a wonderful look!

  • very interesting, its amazing how much make up has evolved. ps spitblock eew !!!

  • What is the name of the makeup artist that you mention in this video? Thanks!

  • @happynellz I think she says Stéphane Marais...

  • Amazing!

  • Girl, I don't study makeup, but I think this look is awesome! Thanks for showing us how to do it!

  • she is beautiful

  • That was seriously fascinating seeing the whole process. You looked like an entirely different person in the end. Thank you!

  • after all the makeup you kinda look like Drew Barrymore, you're so beautiful! great job :)

  • Thank You so much. This is immensely helpful. I have a project on the 20's and I was given Clara Bow and we have to "be" the person. So thank you for this. :]

  • are you kidding me? it's not flattering? it's amazingly flattering!!!

  • This is a beautiful sultry look. Spit and crushed beetles have me a little disenhanted now. I wish there were more written about these women and how they felt in such a liberating time in history for we women. It would also be fun to know how they felt about makeup since just ten years before makeup up was barely worn in the victorian times. Flappers had been labeled as loose women back then by many instead of the independent women they were about to become. xo

  • I'm in my school's Thoroughly Modern Millie this year and this was super helpful! thanks a lot!

  • SUPER COOL! Great tips and anticdotes. I can really understand the differences between this one and the Dior catwalk look. Love the authenticity of this one! Thank you!

  • SUPER COOL! Great tips and anticdotes. I can really understand the differences between this one and the Dior catwalk. Love the authenticity!

  • my names clara :)

  • You remind of Jean Harlow near the end :) Even though she's was more in the 30's, but none the less, you look stunning and dramatic :D I love it!

  • I love the lips<3

I love how Clara put on her lipstick in the shape of a bow. So cute!

  • Although you said the look is unflattering I find it very attractive. You did a wonderful job on your brow line

  • its beautiful ...i dont think its old fashioned ...you sorta remind me of Drew Barrymore at times with this look. id do it one day a week lol

  • Bang on, brilliant, when it goes b/w at the end OMG fantastic.

  • well done

  • Damn,you're pretty!!

  • really great. not studying (a bit of a novice, really!) and still found it incredibly useful. thanks!

  • Lovely tutorial!

  • How can you say it is not the most flattering. You look much better in the full 20"s makeup than before! The only thing you are lacking is the short hair.

  • You're gorgeous with and with out the old style make-up. Lovely tutorial too.

  • hope you could do a hair and makeup tutorial of Keira Knightly as Jane Austen. Thanks :-)

  • the eyebrows are PERFECT! I'm trying to make mine look like that!

  • Thanks, I have tried to get this look right before through copying photographs but never managed it - this really helps! A couple of questions - did they do any shading/blushing on the cheeks? I also thought although they had very limited colour, they did have purple and green, or when did colours start to get used? Thanks!

  • You are absolutely beautiful, and the tutorial is amazing!

  • i hope you don't think i'm weird for saying this, but your accent is absolutely charming! that said, this tutorial was so helpful for me, as i'm being a flapper for halloween :)

  • True art!!!

  • I truley love this makeup tutorial and find myself watching it again and again and again!!! xx

  • very informative! great work

  • You are so gorgeous. Seriously you are stunning.

  • @TwixSaer couldn't agree more! Pixioo Thank You for taking the time to show off your amazing talent and amazing face!!

  • love it .. thank you SO much !!

  • 20's flappers fashion and beauty look is my all time favorite, and I think you really captured the essence from that period. I loved that you also incorporate an educational background of how the gals used for their makeup back then:) well done! Thank you^_^

  • Time spent looking like Clara Bow is never wasted. Would you gingerise your hair with henna though?

  • from all the makeup tutorials that I've watched with boredom...yours have really kept my interest...besides the fact that you are simply a pleasure to look at and listen to, and a great makeup artist, you give those delightful historical details, which puts your videos a step up.

You are just wonderul.keep up the great work! thumbs up! :)

  • Not much we can do to get this look if our eyes/eyebrows/lips are not shaped like yours, now is there...this is great tutuorial to show us how you do *your* inspired make up. Also - your foundation choice is too yellowy.

  • Comment removed

  • Not much you can do if our eyebrowss are not naturally shaped your way.

  • Thank you for this wonderful video! This was a great tutorial! Thanks!

  • Heading to a charity event tonight called - Moonlight at the Ranch and our theme is Roaring Twneties. Thank you so very much for sharing your knowledge!

  • That was fascinating. Really.

  • I have contacts so I couldn't line the inside eyes in white. any ideas?

  • Thank you sooooo much!!!

  • how can i do a similar look if my eyebrows are thick? plz plz plz answer because i've recently been obsessed with the 1920s look.

    thanks

  • You're an amazing makeup artist. I love your work and I love this tutorial. I'm an aspiring model and I've been watching a ton of tutorials recently so that I can (hopefully) learn how to do my own makeup. I'm also a big fan of the 1920's and Clara Bow, so this was amazing. :)

  • Beautiful.

Though that's a lot heavier makeup than I would use, I LOVE the look. Personally, I think it's very flattering, especially considering it was used in black and white film/photography.

The only thing I would use from the 20's look is the dropped eye (less makeup but with same effect) and the red lip color--I like both a great deal. The bedroom eye, especially...

You have a beautiful face, by the way.

    :-)

  • Beautiful hair!!

  • remarkable tips and hints! thanks, have any of you used Max factors most recent line of products? its difficult to find makeup in Newry yet i managed to recieve some brilliant cosmetics samples by using "GratisMakeupSamples", their handy.

  • Very informative. Thanks. Red in an paper from the summer of 1925 that Clara Bow was the first to "wear" hand-painted legs in public. "The decorations ran in floral motifs". No photo exists to document this "gagaistic" exploit a la Bow however, so I have a proposition...

  • Amazing look! You are so talented. I love the historical tidbits about makeup in the 1920s, too. It's all very fascinating. Thanks for sharing! :)

Your hair looks beautiful in this video, BTW.

  • I might've already asked you this once before, but if you could, could you please tell me how to do a Theda Bara inspired look? pretty please? it's before this look, the "vamp" look.

  • i actually really like this look, and i think that people who are conventional wouldn't like it, but i'd totally wear this to school and get some attention

  • you are so pretty with no make up on! :)

  • @missEmistR Sam's

  • Hi I'm watching your videos for a historical fashion shoot I'm doing and have found them really helpful. Thanks :)

  • a lot of people say i should try out the 1920s makeup because i have similar facial characteristics as clara bow..... Thanks ill give this a try :)

  • one of my favourite tutorials here!

But did women really not wear any blush? On many painted portraits of women from the late 19th century to the 1930s I have seen blush that seemed to go from directly below the eyes down to the apples of the cheeks or sometimes right on the apples. Do you know if this was an actual makeup technique then?

  • @19myself91 That's more a reflection of art (incl. pop art) style/ideals back then. It's from Edwardian period ideals about a woman's rosy-cheeked healthy glow (funny, because rich women involved themselves in fewer activities, and the all-over rosy achieved by actual working women was considered rough). Nonetheless, old ideals also thought women with noticeable rouge were considered "loose." If they wore any, it was VERY slight and powdered over. Was more about defining a few striking features.

  • I would look like a ghoul with super dark eyeshadow and lipstick without any blush.

  • your hair is beautiful, I love the soft bouncy curls, very timeless and elegant :)

  • This was very insightful and incredibly interesting. I want to try it too but I know that the eyebrows and lips will give me a hard time and it will look very funny on me afterwards.

  • It's amazing how much this look transforms your face. Thanks for the great tutorial!

  • I don't think it's unflattering... you look beautiful at the end!

  • I love that you do this with historical accuracy even if people today don't find it flattering. Way to be.

  • You look more like jean harlow

  • Umm... Pretty sure I'm in love with you.

    Uh, yep! I am.

  • When makeup was considered as art.

  • i tried this today and it didn't turn out great but it was a lot of fun...

now you just need your cute short hair :)

    haha i love it thanksss(:

  • Thank You so much for this I have Clara Bow for a school project and for extra credit i can dress up as her so this was very helpful :)

  • I wouldn't say that look is "frightening" or "unflattering". It's just another facet in the beauty spectrum, and the movie stars of the early 20th century wore it well!

  • This is exactly what I've been looking for. Next week I am going to a 20s party. Guess its time to practice. Fabulous look. I love it!!!!!!!
