Les was too good for Metallica, I thought that was pretty straight forward really. He would steal spotlight from members who are way overrated like Lars. Metallica are a great an influential band, but none are good enough on their instruments to be like Les.

Metallica is one of my favorite bands and I do like many Primus songs. I would have to agree that Les may be to good for Metallica. Cliff was a great bass player and Jason was good. However Metallica isn't great individualy. James isn't a great signer, Lars isn't a great drummer, and Kirk isn't a great guitar player. Kirk is the best of the 3. I'm not counting Robert. As an individual Claypool is much better.  As an overall band I would say Metallica.

In an interview with Metallica , James himself noted that Les was too good to be in Metallica and he should use his talents else were so they weren't wasted. Thus the start of Primus. And as for the saying the bands suck to each their own. You may personally find Justin Beiber to be awesome and Miley Cyrus but others may think that they'd rather hear a dog bark.
