One might ask "how does it happen that there are so many Surrealists in South America?" How, because of the Many Surrealist Exhibitions Breton made such an effort at Consciously Organizing Many Surrealist Exhibitions in South America FOR the Purpose of Spreading Surrealism into South America. That's how it got there... Breton Brought It To South America. Yes, artists worked many hours creating Surrealist works... Breton Created The Movement -Then Worked Harder Than Anyone Spreading it Globally.
This video is a good example of the cause of the misappropriation of Surrealism into modern forms of understanding. Although Breton expelled dali (aka Avida Dollars) for turning Surrealism into an economic form of art, Breton himself was responsible for the co-optation of the movement, however much he would like to believe otherwise.
There is no father or prophet of Surrealism And it has no heir. That is the point ofand is why Eluard cited Lautreamont - poetry should be made by all, not by one
The main precursor to surrealism was Dada which was a movement that referred to themselves as anti-artists. Where art was concerned with portaying meaning the goal of Dada was to make a nihilistic anti-art devoid of any meaning.
Dali was a sell out. He was a commercial artist. newsflash--surrealists are atheists. they do believe; however, in THE MARVELOUS. surrealism has always existed.-- it was only discovered.
Dali is so far from being the godfather of surrealism it isn't even funny. He was excommunicated from the group because of his ties to fascism, religion and commercialism.
They got rid of Dali not so much for religion but certainly for annoyingly repeating the same forms who by 1925 had became cheap and boring after all.
According to Andre Breton
surrealism (automatic psych ism) derives from Dostoyevsky ,Isidor Ducasse ,Jacques Vases , and Tsjekhov ,but the question is much more complicated and answers taking us back to the amazing 11 century Constantinople writer Ptochoprodromos , and even earlier with Aristophanes .
It was Breton who also told Frida Kahlo she was a surreal woman herself and paintings where tagged along, when she arrived in Paris she realized he was penny less and decided to stay else where, Though Breton was an amazing person he was also a lier, a big one.
Lets not forget Goya....he may not be a godfather, but he was CERTAINLY an influence--stripping away the superficiality and digging in to the twisted soul of his world.
Also, remember that surrealism began with language and moved into images second...look to Neruda, Patchen, Paz, d a levy....there also lies hidden understanding...

David Lynch did an amazing series on The Surrealists for the BBC that I watched in Ireland around 86-87 I think. It mentions Breton and Dali and shows a lot of examples of early surrealist attempts. I will look to see if I can find it.
LA QUESTION NE SE POSE MEME PAS!''Dieu est un porc''.``Des gens comme Aragon, en 1930, comme Dali vers 1935, comme Éluard en 1938 ont cessé d`etre SURRÉALISTES``.(André Breton)
surreal in the artistic sense is to be 'super-real'. not to be sub-conscious but 'super-conscious'. the expression of a surrealist is not the expression of our inner selves but of our whole selves, realizing our true potentials, alive and livid.
Andre Breton was the center of surrealism movement and Dali was the most well known, probably also the most accomplished surrealist to date. Remember surrealists consider themselves writers foremost so DADA movement is the birth of surrealism. ;)
Dali probably would have said something subreally meaningful! However, we can only offer our own view although this might be more realitic! Subrealism is a less known state of mind a dimention of perception which we can only access through dreams or -some would argue, under a state of chemical imbalance! Maybe! The same argument would assert that through drug use or madness its possible to live the subreal experience. I disagree! Was the genious insane?
This video has certainly got a surrealist feel to it! I think it would be fair to say that Dali wasn't just the best known artist but a master and true representative of the movement. Dali was surrealism itself! While other artist could be in & out of the surrealist experience Dali lived & though as a surrealist! This is a good video!

Andre Breton was the one who really pulled it all together, but surrealism existed before anyone named it.

You're right, Hieronymus Bosch is the most incredible painter ever born, but almost no one knows about it! Keep the secret!
