Found a way to get the dealer to accept my 2003 mercury Mountaineer as a trade in +$5,000 for a 2003 540i with 138,000 miles. My Mountaineer had 127,000 miles and it was a lemon so I'm ecstatic!

umm, the 540i isn't a rack and pinion. The 540i and the M5 are the only e39's that aren't rack and pinion. They are recirculated ball type. Man. You would think MotorTrend would have all their facts right.

Just bought my 540i two days ago. I traded my 06 sti for it and I have no regrets. My sti had 388 whp and 369 wtrq on a mustang dyno. BMW is in a world of its own even with less power and more weight it pulls strong

The 540i doesn't have a rack and pinion - it is fitted with recirculating ball type steering and servotronic. With the inclusion of the big M60-62 V8, they couldn't find the space to squeeze a rack in there.
@scrfce123 Same with the M5`s S62. I owned a 530i with rack and pinion and you can tell the difference (now I have the 540i). Neither is bad, but the 530i gives you more confidence and precision in handling, definitely. Also the lighter engine makes the 530i more controllable.
@chefinko Don't mind the steering feel on my E39 535i... It has good weight and feedback. Only thing that I don't like is the fact that it is a little slow to return to center and as a result, requires intervention. The 6 cyl versions are much crisper - That said, when it comes to steering feel, you could do alot worse than an E39 M5, 540i or 535i... Take some of BMW's more modern cars, for example.
the e39 540i does not have rack and pinion steering as stated in the video. the 540i and m5 use recirculating ball steering. Only the 528i, 525i and 530i have the rack and pinion steering.
@maino2471 I've got 1999 540i 6 speed and it's not bad on gas. In the city I get maybe 10-15 mpg, but on the highway I get almost 30 mpg!!! Highway ranges from about 22-32 mpg for me (depending on my driving style...it's hard not to stomp the throttle every once-in-a-while!! haha).
@maino2471 However, the automatic version most likely gets worse mpg's. The 6-speed is great on the highway if you set cruise control or keep your speed / gently accelerate. I've had a 528i and it only got 2-3 mpg more than my 540i on the highway, not to mention the 528i would rev around 3500 rpm while doing 80mph, while my 540i revs about 2600 rpm....lower rpm=longer engine life!!!

Depends on how well-maintained it is. Don't consider any car that hasn't had regular maintenance (lots of timely oil chnages etc.) AND has the service history to prove it. Also get it professionallly inspected. You can probably get it a little lower than $10K with that mileage. Good luck.
@vishalbigv I got the exact same year but mine got 230 000 now ,the 540I are very reliable and way better then the v6 530i..very strong and smooth transmission, but takes a lot of gas if you don't mind that then u well have a very beautiful car to drive .

@lekocaj23 Oh I forgot the water pump... If you didn't buy it already check online you can find good deals. Look for a water pump with an aluminum impeller it will last longer. Consider also changing the radiator and expansion tank as well if you overheated the vehicle it may leak. What a lot of people don't know is that BMW's have a lot of plastic components in coolant system in which they get extremely brittle. I will stop now I can go on forever LOL.
i agree the new m3 is a bit to underpowered for a modern v8 (still alot of power) and the new last 3 7 series cars are ugly my dad use to have a e32 (1989[i think]-1993) 740i it was the best car that i have ever been in and was suprisingly powerful and is also one of the best looking cars in my opinion and hopefuly in 2 months i should have a e39 540i :D

my lexus es 300, 5speed has more potential, and drives nicer than the 530, but I just like the way the 530 looks. i like the way my car looks too which is why it's hard for me to sell it. not to mention my car has a better, more powerful engine with a better torque curve than even the later bmw 6cyl. 200hp@5800 205lb-ft@4600 all the torque available at 2200 RPM, most of it even lower. So yeah. just look up "3vz-fe" on yotatech by toysrme or wikipedia that engine

Secondly, the M5 is a poor choice of car for a daily driver. The "540i6" as they are called has the same useful torque, more comfort [up to a point, depends on the year and trim], and has much much higher reliablility, not to mention the spare tire in the trunk. Further, insurance will be much better with the 540i6.
it's not impossible to get but it's really rare that you see an m3 or m5 on the market, i see them all the time on the streets but not for sale.
well if i want confort i'll just get a 7 series,..the normal 5 series might have more reliability, but it just doesn't compare with the m5, which has a completely rebuilt engine, and every piece on the car is engineered for performance.
honestly if i would buy a bmw, it would be an m3, and of course it wont be a daily driver

Your Toyota does not drive better than a BMW 5 series. It may be easier to tune, but the handling stock for stock goes hands down to the BMW.

I tried to watch the video...the sound was not working though. Regardless, you understand that MW is trying to steer you towards the car they are showing right? Did you watch the video your currently commenting on, they clearly like the 5 series as well. One cannot gain an appropriate opinion of a vehicle by watching motorweek..I would think thats common sense.

well it works fine, its your computer's problem. even high quality mode works fine for that video. watch it again and watch my car's vague competition, the bmw 325 get destroyed by my car

Im not watching it, did you read y comment at all? I understand the lexus is a nice car, thats what they are going to say. No front wheel drive car could possibly compeat with a BMW do u understand that mayam?

Correction- we are talking about a 1993 toyota camry vs what? A 525i 535i? 3 series is out of the question because its lightyears better than the toyota in every catagory. The 525i is slower due to the weight so if your going to make any sort of attempt at it thats the car to compare. And its still a joke at that. The toyota isnt in the same class, clearly you have never driven a bmw right?

Yours? The Lexus es is a Camry with a leather shell. They are mechanically EXACTLY the same. Nice car I like them, but not performance oriented at all.

530i of this gen is good for the rack and pinion steering, better balance, and normal accelerative abilities for everyday driving
the 540i may not be as good at taht stuff, but it's so much more powerful.
so hard to choose.

well if you have the money and don't live in canada like me, you can buy an m5, get aaalooot more power with the 530 driving performance...even better

First, why is the M5 impossible in Canada?
Secondly, the M5 is a poor choice of car for a daily driver. The "540i6" as they are called has the same useful torque, more comfort [up to a point, depends on the year and trim], and has much much higher reliablility, not to mention the spare tire in the trunk. Further, insurance will be much better with the 540i6.

it's not impossible to get but it's really rare that you see an m3 or m5 on the market, i see them all the time on the streets but not for sale.
well if i want confort i'll just get a 7 series,..the normal 5 series might have more reliability, but it just doesn't compare with the m5, which has a completely rebuilt engine, and every piece on the car is engineered for performance.
honestly if i would buy a bmw, it would be an m3, and of course it wont be a daily driver

At 1:25 he says rack and pinion, no E39 V8's have rack and pinion its recirculating ball and the 6's couldn't pull that drift either. lol
