@taofledermaus I made a few of these wax slugs out of hot glue. Going to test it tomorrow. Also I made a bunch of other homemade rounds from steel shot, 20mm steel screws, and galvanized steel hooks. Going to do some DAMAGE!
@ballisticsexpert8 I have to think about colors when I shoot in slo-mo. Turns out the crayons work quite well. I believe it is still paraffin wax but they also add talc to make the crayons harder. The crayon wax is harder and more brittle than either candle or canning wax. I don't know if it changes any of the properties of the rounds or makes a significant difference.
@zultone2 Not yet. I'm not sure if they would hold together, since the bird shot gives the rounds compressive strength. I don't think they'd be very exciting to be honest since they'd have little weight.
have you ever thought of doing FPSrussia's arrow shot? it looks and sounds dangerous, he put an arrow down the barrel of a shotgun and fired it. not sure what kind of ammo he used, but it's on one of his videos.
Looks like you got the same results with them that I got. Actually ever since I learned about them I have not bought any regular slugs ( at least not for the close range stuff I do for YT ). Also washers, glass beads & shot, nail heads, etc...all work well poured into a shot shell with wax.
@CasioEXF1Freak Yeah, why buy actual slugs? lol I feel the same way. You can probably use even sand and have great results. It doesn't seem to care since it is all just ballast.
How that you are quite familiar with making wax slugs, you can now experiment with shaped wax slugs. For example, adding a round nose, adding an aluminum fin (like the 12G frag shots shown in Future Weapon's episode that featured the AA12), and so forth. ( :
@ryukenosuke I've learned that these things would be terrible hunting rounds. What they really are, are homemade breaching rounds. They work great up to about 20 yards max (while they are still going supersonic) It's when they slow down to subsonic they seem to lose stability. Think of them as really fast sledge hammers!
ahh o was going to say "shit thats alot of power for just wax." confused me for a bit.. then I rewatched and seen the shot bound together with wax.. ahhhh ok
@madblunted Yeah, the term "wax slug" makes one think they are just solid wax. The wax is more like the cement and the pellets are the aggragate or ballast.
@gl797 Awww, but I sipped some Mercury off the table of my professor's lab? I couldn't help it. It looked so yummy and silvery, not like a poisonous metal. LOL
@CyberPilot360 I think they are too. We shot a hard drive with a factory slug a year ago and it blew a hole through it, but the wax slugs made bigger holes. I did not expect them to even go through the hard drive.
@drumONdrugs23 The king of ballistics gel is Tnoutdoors. I'm not sure if he would be snobbish towards wax slugs or not though. Some people only trust anything that is 100% "factory".
Hey @taofledermaus , do you have a link to a website/video with a tut on how to make these? Are they just birdshot that have the top cut off and all the bbs are held together with wax? Also, freaking awesome video man, keep them coming!!!!
@mrcoolyea1 were as most standard shotgun shells contain multiple pellets, or "shot", a slug is one single solid projectile, abit more like a rifle or pistol, but with much less accuracy and range, and almost silly amounts of power
@JoeJoeTater Yes. We probably shot 75 rounds of this today. (about $18 worth of shells) If we were shooting factory slugs it would have cost us over $75 to shoot that many rounds. That's a lot of money for just "plinking".
@daewooparts I have a lot more footage of the dolls getting shot, many headshots, but I was worried people might freak out seeing so many dolls being shot. lol I'll post a separate video just showing the headshots. Ozzy was a really good shot.
@taofledermaus haha and thank god they didnt sell cus without unconventional targets your vids wouldnt be as epic :P haha keep it up man, thanx for all the entertainment and the reply.
@taofledermaus Perhaps to improve accuracy you could put a round plastic cap over the front of the wax slug; or possibly a slice off of a super ball; or even just sculpt the wax to have a round tip with some sort of mold you can put over the wax while it's still hot... you could use slightly a longer shell so the cap will fit properly without having to take more wax or lead out.
Just a suggestion; I like the wax slug & it could be more accurate if it were more aerodynamic.
You ABSOLUTELY need to do a ballistic gel test with these. I'd be very interested to see what they really do against a "soft" target.
