Even with its limited production run this tank should be ahead of the M1 Abhrams as the M1 borrowed technology from this tank. It should also be ahead of the Leopard 2 as this tank has seen combat and the Leopard is still untested and therefore has made no real impact on the battlefield.

I think that the ranking of this tank is correct, it is very similar to the abrams sharing the same classified armour design but has a lower speed to the abrams but it has a rifled gun which can be argued needs replacing after fewer shots but its more accurate and that can be backed up with facts.
If the british had up to 9000 challengers like the americans abrams the argument couldnt be made to seperate the two apart but im sure youtube comments would try!!

If you are talking T-72M then maybe, the M model's armor is pathetic and it even lacks a stabilized gun. A Challenger 2 carries 52 shells for its main gun and even if a T-72M using HEAT could take out a tread and score a mobility kill. A Russia T-72 has armor that can take a HESH round, good sights, RA, a trained crew and DU APFSDS making a 50-1 ration unlikely.

I think they rate tanks not just according to how well they perform, but their overall impact on the battlefield. If there are 50 - 60 some tanks in a war where thousands are used. They are going make too much an impact.

If a tank was better becasue of numbers of produced units, then the Syrians would have easily win the Arab Israeli war because of the amount of tanks they had at the time. However because they were outdated, that did not happen because the Syrian tanks were much older than the M1 Abrams which at the time was the most high tech tank. These vids are bad.
Challengers were operating in the south, the Abram's were operating in hot spots, and the Abrams that were destroyed by massive bombs buried in the ground, and detonated by cell phones... Even the Challenger cannot survive such a massive explosion.. Note on 2 US service men died in Abrams, due to enemy action after the actual explosion, also note that any tank can be destroyed by a large enough bomb, lastly, there are no secrets between US and British armies, both tanks use the same armor

Also as said in the video, the abrams is not faster off road. Add to that the fact that the challenger 2 already had a much improved version of what the abrams uses for armour AND in 2010 the challenger 2 received "new modular armour" and passive armour upgrade making it by far the strongest.

The Challenger II is an excellent tank, and certainly up there way beyond #7 in the world, in my opinion. The only real difference between it and the M1A2 Abrams (both use Chobham armour and similar weaponry, ammo and sights) is the engine. The Abrams uses a turbine while the Challenger uses a diesel engine. That means that the Abrams can churn out a few extra mph of speed when it needs to, but at the expense of range of operations. It's a thirsty beast.

Should be rated higher. Damn expensive but one of the toughest tanks in the world. It's got a great gun with superior range and can kill older tanks quite easily. It's not a Leo or Abrams, but imho the best tank in 2nd and 3rd world scenarios.

Again, a a battlefield is NOT an air conditioned, spiffy-clean, auto showroom. Build 1000, 2000, 3000 Challengers and watch it make the top 5....top 2? Just sayin'.

The reason you see more Abrams destroyed is because there is more of them. Way more of them. The Brits have 386 Challengers. The Americans have 6000 Abrams. If you increase the number of Challengers, the casualties will go up accordingly. Frankly, though, they're both great tanks. I think all Western Tank designs kick major ass.

I disagree with the outcome based on numbers too. It should be based on quality not quantity. Quality wise the Challenger 2, with its computer targeting system, should be equal to the Abrams at best or No. 2 at worst. The Abrams is faster due to its tubine engine, but the Challenger 2 is better on fuel. Swings and roundabouts. The Challenger 1 is definitely inferior to both the Abrams and Leopard though, due to its lack of a computer targeting system, but it’s better than the T-72.

Funny how they call it the "Challenger tank" when, unlike the difference between A1 and A2 Abrams tanks, shares only 2% commonality with Challenger 1. I'd prefer them to to a better researched show where they compare the Challenger 2, without misnaming it.
This is just another patriotic american TV show trying to find a way to say that USA is the best at everything.

@alekzander2 which T-72 are you referring to here? the Soviet/Russian army T-72s or the pathetic T-72M export model? If you are talking T-72M then maybe, the M model's armor is pathetic and it even lacks a stabilized gun. A Challenger 2 carries 52 shells for its main gun and even if a T-72M using HEAT could take out a tread and score a mobility kill. A Russia T-72 has armor that can take a HESH round, good sights, RA, a trained crew and DU APFSDS making a 50-1 ration unlikely.

I think they rate tanks not just according to how well they perform, but their overall impact on the battlefield. If there are 50 - 60 some tanks in a war where thousands are used. They are going make too much an impact.

You rate a tank based on its features, not on how many that were built.
If a tank was better becasue of numbers of produced units, then the Syrians would have easily win the Arab Israeli war because of the amount of tanks they had at the time. However because they were outdated, that did not happen because the Syrian tanks were much older than the M1 Abrams which at the time was the most high tech tank. These vids are bad.

Challengers were operating in the south, the Abram's were operating in hot spots, and the Abrams that were destroyed by massive bombs buried in the ground, and detonated by cell phones... Even the Challenger cannot survive such a massive explosion.. Note on 2 US service men died in Abrams, due to enemy action after the actual explosion, also note that any tank can be destroyed by a large enough bomb, lastly, there are no secrets between US and British armies, both tanks use the same armor

@Th3R3ap3r3r the m1a2 has a lot higher speed. also it has smoothbore gun that fires faster rounds. the challenger is very good though, and the m1a2 DID copy the challenger's composite armor. but the m1a2 has never been destroyed by another tank, unlike it says in this video. the m1a2 and the challenger are basicaly the same, the m1a2 is just faster.

Also as said in the video, the abrams is not faster off road. Add to that the fact that the challenger 2 already had a much improved version of what the abrams uses for armour AND in 2010 the challenger 2 received "new modular armour" and passive armour upgrade making it by far the strongest.

The Challenger II is an excellent tank, and certainly up there way beyond #7 in the world, in my opinion. The only real difference between it and the M1A2 Abrams (both use Chobham armour and similar weaponry, ammo and sights) is the engine. The Abrams uses a turbine while the Challenger uses a diesel engine. That means that the Abrams can churn out a few extra mph of speed when it needs to, but at the expense of range of operations. It's a thirsty beast.

Should be rated higher. Damn expensive but one of the toughest tanks in the world. It's got a great gun with superior range and can kill older tanks quite easily. It's not a Leo or Abrams, but imho the best tank in 2nd and 3rd world scenarios.

Example: The Tiger tank was superior to the T-34 and Sherman....BUT.....throw enough 34's/Shermans into the field of battle and the Tigers are overwhelmed. Again, a a battlefield is NOT an air conditioned, spiffy-clean, auto showroom. Build 1000, 2000, 3000 Challengers and watch it make the top 5....top 2? Just sayin'.

The reason you see more Abrams destroyed is because there is more of them. Way more of them. The Brits have 386 Challengers. The Americans have 6000 Abrams. If you increase the number of Challengers, the casualties will go up accordingly. Frankly, though, they're both great tanks. I think all Western Tank designs kick major ass.

I disagree with the outcome based on numbers too. It should be based on quality not quantity. Quality wise the Challenger 2, with its computer targeting system, should be equal to the Abrams at best or No. 2 at worst. The Abrams is faster due to its tubine engine, but the Challenger 2 is better on fuel. Swings and roundabouts. The Challenger 1 is definitely inferior to both the Abrams and Leopard though, due to its lack of a computer targeting system, but it’s better than the T-72.

Numbers? We are a small Island nation what the fuck would be need 5,000 challengers for? Head to head it would take out any tank before they could even get in range to shoot back.

um, why would the effectiveness of a tank be stunted by the fact that only a relatively few number have been made? it seems like a really weak excuse not to rate this tank as highly as it should be.

@jimmybloodyjimmy i agree, the best tank in theory could be be made in numbers of 10 or so? numbers doesnt matter when considering the best tank? bollocks! nobody would say that the best car in the world had to made in thousands? same old yank shite talking themselves up. British Army may not have the number 1 equipment but we spend years training the best guys.. thats where we win..

I recall 3 Challengers getting taken out of action in Iraq. 1 from friendly fire by another Challenger. Also there are less than 500 Challenger tanks and over 5000 Abrams

Cool tank, shouldn't have gotten a lower score for mobility though, it's almost as fast as a American abrams and it has a incredible range.
I've always wondered, what are those things sticking out off the turret left of the cannon at about 1:49?

Far Factor Low because there is not enough to be scared off...What happened when a Tiger tank appeared on the battlefields of WW2? Sherman and Churchill tank crews agreed to chill the fuck out and have a smoke because it's only a single Tiger tank :).

@custerdcake Probably because the Americans spend more money on weapons than anybody else on earth. With a few trillion dollars, you're bound to get some bang for your buck. :D
As for the Russians; they're Russians. Hundreds of years of political backstabbing, horrible living conditions and teh most brutal wars in history. After that, you damn well best know how to make a weapon. Also; Soviet Union. :P
