I still have not found a canopener that leaves the rim like on the coke can.my old one has worn out, I like the one that cuts like the electric type if you need a piece of tin for a project. Thanks for the info !!!
Exceptional tutorial with perfect timing since I'm visiting an island off of NC called Ocracoke where I found one of the last remaining 24 oz old style Heineken cans for 3 bucks. I don't drink beer but I did want to try my hand at making a pot from it and since they only had one left I needed your tutorial because I only have the electric side winder one touch.
I'll need to pick up the other type to empty this can of it's contents before boarding the plane back home to Santa Cruz. Thanx Hiram!
hiram, hi! :) whats the exact brand and name of the opener you Sent for David?... is it better than your 'Chefmate clamshell safe cut can opener"?... :)
Hi Hiram; You've probably been inundated with requests for help in obtaing the side opening can opener that leaves no sharp edges on either the lid or the can sides. well I am asking for your assistance because I am unable to see anything like it over here in England. More importantly I am riddled with arthritis and am pretty clumsy nowadays and I am always cutting myself on cans Is there any chance you could tell me the make of can opener so I can find one on the internet. Many Thanks BSW
You are the man. The only one that clears up that the can opener has to me filed down to make the clearance. I wasted a lot of time and went through 3 different types (I returned them all, except the one you've got - clam type). I also wanted to point out that Heineken change the top on the 24 oz, so that it doesn't have all of the ridges/rings. Instead it looks like the 12 oz can.
Thank you for a vid that explains what the diff was. I never wantd a side cutter because of the sharp edge issues. In next few days I will buy one, any suggestions as to which ones work best? The automatic ones would be nice if you wanted to make tubes.
BTW, I am putting on a camping/hiking equipment class (BALOO) for my Cub Scout leaders today. I have put together a list of suppliers/resourcesvto handout and I included your channel.
I have have looked all over for the can opener that you use. Can't find one exactly like it. And the ones I have bought don't do the job very well. I'm getting quite a collection...of ones that don't work.
Hello Hiram, this is very useful. Thanks! Just for others' convenience, do not buy "leifheit signature safety can opener 23212". It's a good can opener but doesn't work with cans with dent and pull tub (key?), especially 12oz soda can. I crushed the edge. So now I use plain G.I can opener to leave the edge for pot. For lid, I use safety cutter and open another can with no dent. But I'm still searching for a good can opener for lid/pot. Anyone has exact name?
The electric openers may keep the lid out of the can contents but I think they just trade one sharp edge for another. I hope you were able to find one of the side cutters like I showed in the video. They're getting scarce around here.
hey hiramcook, i'm from Australia and we don't have that kind of opener that leaves part of the bead on both the lid and the can. all of ours leave the whole bead on either the lid or the can. can you suggest somewhere online i can buy one of these?
You might find some on eBay that will ship out your way. Careful though it seems like a lot of the side cutters cut the can below the lid which I would think would give a sharp can edge instead of a sharp edged lid. If you don't find anything send me a message.
@davo002 I'm from OZ. I had a girlfriend who bought one of these. I think she got it at a "tupper ware" type party. I remember thinking I'll borrow that to make some stuff before our next fishing trip. I was a breeze to use, even I was impressed.
Good video. Especially the comment on leaving enough meat for the pivot pin. The only one I could find was the single handle version. I just kept filing until I got it where it would work every time with the minimum removale. Your comment kept me from overdoing it and removing too much material.
For the life of me it is not working. Its the one you have shown in this video. It's the one on the far left, with the chrome tips. well it shaved off the raised edge and it still wont bite into the can....
I love it when somone does a video on something as trival as a Safey Cut Can Opener. Most YouTubers want to make video's on more popular items. When I was making my first Heiny Pot I was looking for Safety Cut can opener that worked. They all seemed not to work because of that extended bump of plastic under the cutting wheel. I searched around and found the one you described as gear driven. It worked great on my Heineken Pot. Home Essential at Kmart. Great Video!
Thank you for the kind words. Not sure if I would call it trival when so many seem to need the info. Maybe a beter term would be that my videos are about info that isn't t as glamorous as some want to do. Sometimes I'm surprised that I get the ratings that I do. Oh well, as long as I'm not boring everyone I guess I'll keep making videos. Thanks for commenting.
PS I even sent a can opener to London for a viewer who couldn't find them locally. Cool.
The "trivial" comment was meant to be tongue in cheek. It's nice to see a video about something most don't even consider doing. If someone was interested in building a Heineken Pot they wouldn't realize what a pain it can be to find the right safety cut can opener. I like helpful, off the wall videos, that some might think as trivial. To others they can be very helpful. Keep up the great vids.
Good info Hiram! I have a few of these myself. I had to modify some of mine as you did. I have been picking them up at walmart for 4-10 bucks. I found that the cheaper you go the shorter the life of the opener. As is is said you get what you pay for.
good vid, could of saved me some cash, i spent 40 bucks finding the right opener, now i have the battery opener and a couple of side cutters that are garage sale fodder now....lol
Another super review Hiram. Here there are no such things so I picked on up the last time I was in the states. Wish I had seen your vid first. On a side note, Im not so sure I should ever challenge you to a chugging contest.
Thanks. If you every need another can opener let me know. As for the chugging I really didn't do to good there. Found that it was a little early for Coke too. LOL
