She's cute, and I love this idea, and this was a fun, different TED talk, but I think this turned a LOT of people off...because....well...she just really isn't very good at finding sophisticated, clean, elegant, (dare I say) "stylish" things to wear. Her outfits look really kiddish..and well...quite cheap. That's her style, and God bless her, she seems like a wonderful person, and she's right, only YOU need to think you look good. Still though, they just aren't aesthetically pleasing.
@TalynCo I disagree with that. I definitely don't have a typical body type and I'm able to find tons of stuff second hand. It's not just "typical body types" who donate clothes.
@AngieSPants It would of course depend on what 'non-typical body type' you have. The amount of times I've found reasonably fitting second hand clothes could be counted on the fingers of an amputee.
But so many factors play into this. : ) Suffice to safe it's much easier with a normal body type.
Wearing nothing, not wearing nothing new. If one is concerned with the environmental and monetary obligations associated, refuse those obligations. A talk challenging clothing entirely would be preferable.
some cute outfis, a little sick of the different colored cowboy boots... those red pants and garish colors unnecessary. You can find lightly used clothing without looking like the crazy lady around town.....
She talked about the personal, emotional, subjective aspects of this issue but I think it is more than that. So much of our clothing is manufactured outside of the United Stated, in sweatshops. We're losing jobs so we can be able to afford cheap, poor quality garments manufactured by ten year old girls when there is still clothing around in good condition that nobody wears anymore. It's about the R's, re-use, re-purpose. Environmentally, economically, and ethically, it's smarter.
Far from the greatest TED talk I've seen but definitely not the worst. My philosophy on the way someone should dress...you should dress on the outside the way you feel on the inside. If you're feeling clever and sharp then dress in a suit with some nice dress shoes. If you're feeling happy & relaxed then put on some shorts & wear some sandals. When I look at how someone dresses I don't give a shit about how much they spent on their clothes...I look at how they dress to know how they feel.
Most of us would get fired for looking like that and none of us would get hired looking like that. Plus, who has time to go somewhere on a business trip and shop. Plus, I am size 16 and most thrift shops don't have anything for me unless it looks like a sack.
I'm sorry but her outfits are train wrecks. Her statement that she "looks like a 7 year old" or is "playing dressup" are not the message most people want to send with their sartorial decisions. Her Friday look is enough to commit her to an institution. Lastly, men can't get away with NEAR the amount of leeway a woman generally can. Men can't look "whimsical" and be taken seriously.
@impeccableimbecile Creativity and utilizing the value of consumption 'bored' you? Was it because she smiled and was friendly and spoke without using 'big words' that suddenly, her views became less than intellectually stimulating? Didn't you get SOME kind of take home message? Don't forget. The world is comprised of many different views with pockets of gems in many aspects of daily life. Aren't you being dismissive because her presentation didn't fit -your- criteria of "smart"?
She was cute and funny and contagiously effervescent. Her message contained nothing lofty, it won't transform the world, erase poverty, extinguish world conflict, wars and massacres and genocides. Her message is intended for us, the privileged people, with money and security, but still inner angst, self-consciousness, so many inhibitions and restraints. Her styles were eye-catching, but it was her groovy outlook on life that charmed me. I actually did draw inspiration from her!
@TheDoodlibop What exactly did you find intellectually stimulating? Clothes aren't the only thing she recycled. She spit out the same, tired rhetoric of people like Lady Gaga and nearly every artist with a "uniqueness" complex. There was nothing creative about this.
@PoweredByMagnets A uniqueness complex is quite common. xD Very many people TRY to stand out and TRY to be unique, which, when you think about it, really isn't being yourself, it's angst that's trying to prove to everyone that you can be unique and still be "fabulous" which in the end, all you're doing really IS worrying what other people think.
@darkprincess1012 You make a really good point. I first interpreted the "confidence is key" part as "don't care what other people think"; but after considering that you can't value uniqueness without caring, I think she trained herself to think she's more beautiful when people object to her looks.
I found it disturbing when she said she couldn't be herself and fit in. Of course she can't, because she's defined "herself" as someone who doesn't fit in. I wonder if hipsters have identity crises.
@darkprincess1012 i think you are painting with broad strokes that may be the case with some but then again putting people in a boxes (when we clearly aren't boxes) usually put ones views on unstable ground.. such is the nature of assumptions... as nelly furtado once put it "all i can do is try"...
@TheDoodlibop I think it's because her talk really wasn't that original and didnt really bring anything new or unheard of to TED talks. Also, her outfits (i guess this is more on opinion) weren't THAT impressive. She was cute and energetic, but most of the thigns she said, millions of people have said before, and billions have heard already.
What a heartening and impressing woman. This video is NOT about clothes. It is about self-conception. The way you reflect your life. Self-respect is the key word!
So, how much did she spend all week? Breaking it down, I figure she spent well over a hundred dollars to "rent" her outfits. Would it not be better to own your wardrobe and use your resources for other things?
LOL... we learned this YEARS ago, when it comes to shopping at thrift stores. Loved the part about "feeling beautiful inside and you will look beautiful on the outside." Great story.
I am quite shocked reading comments how people get conclusions from this video. She only talked about one story of wearing second-hand clothing. There are so many ways to find great second-hand clothes that you like. She found hers and I am sure everyone will be able to find good ones, too. Overall, it was a cheerful talk that lasted only for five minutes.
This was crap. You know it, I know it, and anyone who thinks differently is wrong.
Sure, like any hobby (collecting dolls, wearing latex, clubbing seals), it has a certain appeal to the person with the hobby, but obviously, to anyone else it is crap.
If you need to draw so much attention to yourself, you have a problem that clothing cannot solve.
Sorry. I like my job and so does my wife, especially in this economy. When you work with customers you don't get a choice because you have to be taken seriously. As a manager she can't dress like a 7 year old because she needs to command some authority. I have a security clearance to keep. I can't look like I'm dressed for an ad shoot at Toys R' Us.
If you can get away with that, fine, but for most of us, we can't just say "screw the dress code."
the change i was refering to will be incumbent on the worker but also on the clients. And although in my earlier enthusiasm i might have appear unreasonable, i am aware it will require steps before people start thinking in this way. the first step might just be a once a month no dress code day . it may also be rename something else to appeal to people good consciousness like Reduced Dress Caused Carbon Footprint Day (RD2CF DAY ) ....
Because you have to look respectable. Most places already have those sorts of days. They're called "casual Friday." However, even then you have to keep to a respectable standard, and "shiny tiger" will never meet it, unless you're a hooker.
For most business professionals, especially those that deal with customers even on casual Friday, the only acceptable thing she has there is the purple thing she has on.
@KemaTheAtheist Well Kema it's great to see that we can agree on atheism. I'm sorry to have offended you. Some of my shorts/sock/sandal wearing agriculture researching colleagues are happy to they don't have to conform to business dress standards.
i did something farely similar, i had everything, lots of books that i spent thousands building up as a collection, a tv, a flat/apartment, a few great friends and i left it all behind, for the journey 18kg of luggage in my case and thats all i have, because i know not where the journey of life may take me but i do know i will die, and in accepting that i accept that i must live.
Donating it back right away seems wasteful no matter how cheap it was to start with. People just have to know how to shop smart because you can find brand names (with tags) at bargain prices if you take the time to look. She is definitely right though bargain /thrift shopping is a treasure hunt.
I also love doing this! My wardrobe isn't as bright, but that's another great thing about thrifting - your selection is huge! She's very inspirational :)
I think this is too personal... If someone likes to wear LV, Gucci, Chanel, etc,etc,etc....so be it! And if someone don't give a shi... to these brands?! Fine too!! What is wrong, IMO, is when someone criticizes the way another person is dressed, just because he/she do not like it... everybody have their own style and knows what is better for himself. RESPECT is the new deal!
Its true; some good advice i heard: it doesn't matter what you wear, it could be a potatoe sack, but if you wear it with confidence and if you are proud in the way you carry yourself, it will be the best damn potatoe sack ever! ... ( from americas next top model believe it or not)
The statement "If you believe that you are beautiful in the inside and the outside, no one will stop you" is a statement completely depended on who says it. Of course she can be very certain of it, but only because she is remarkably pretty.
Dear world: loosen up, be kind, share, and create/enjoy the beauty! It's not all about money and producing...it's about being ourselves and laughing about it! :)
Now would usually be the time I criticize TED for devolving into almost nothing resembling Technology, Entertainment, and Design but she's just so damn adorable. <3
@brod2man ... spinning jenny ... hemp is not weed but weed is hemp ... I think not many in the west found smoking weed pleasurable before the campaign that publicized it as a recreational drug (could we label it superman coffee trend?). What I find stupid though is they cleared the west of nearly all hemp, but failed to get rid of a bunch of other plants like datura stamonium which is truly dangerous, and no one noticed how pretentious that campaign was.
I've been buying shoes at thrift shops for over 20 years and never had foot fungus as a result. Wipe down the interior of the shoes with a damp, slightly soapy rag, spray with Lysol and allow to air dry and they should then be fungus free.
fun simple message... but important too. and only 5 mins. all you haters stop being such a bunch of stuffy crabs. and besides... f*ck expensive bullsh*t fashion! did any of you people thumbs downing this listen to her message for Thursday?
I'll be curious to see if, by any chance, there is a positive correlation here between the number of militant dislikers and fast-food holy diet pushers.
Only a dickhead would have a problem with this. It's a five minute talk for fucks sake. You poor miserable bastards who couldn't imagine themselves being happy in second hand clothes need to find this woman and get a hug. I'm sure she'd be happy to.
She's spent at least $ 20 for 7 days worth of clothes - I think it would have been better if she had actually brought back clothes from home and save that money - practicing what she preaches. Plus: she's doing nothing new with the clothes. I found newdressadaydotcom much more inspiring. Merissa buys clothes for $1 and sews them like she wants.
That's a subjective minor detail, you'd agree. You can easily find heaps of ugly shit on a catwalk just as well. Plus, I quite find it fits her personality, as much as it wouldn't fit mines. But there's probably enough good 2nd hand out there to satisfy us both in different ways.
i see this as a metaphor - in life, one should have self-confidence, be positive, not be afraid to be different, don't get attached to material possessions, willing to let go when necessary, and spending wisely. it's not just about clothes. it's about old age good advice that we all know but forgot to practice in our busy daily struggle for success.
@jewellx80 totally agreed. I also took almost the exact some things from the film "Up in the Air" a couple of years ago.
As a minimalist, (computer&science) geek, and freethinker, who also happen to be asocial (not anti) i find i practice most of this in my daily life. The only things in life i'm truely attached to are my immediate family and best friends. The rest are just disposable conveniences. All i need is a place to sleep, food, and a decent computer with a good internet connection.
@CoinDl All I'm saying is, I dont think its cool to wear someone elses garbage. Sorry if you dont think I have a right to an opinion thats different than YOURS. But I guess intolerance is your motto.
Speaking of ignorance...the top 3 producers of cotton in the world grow enough cotton to make 31 BILLION large t-shirts. And thats just cotton. Then you have polyester, linen, nylon, acrylic, and acetate which make clothes. So your source that we burn thru more than can be replenished is WRONG!

What is wrong, IMO, is when someone criticizes the way another person is dressed, just because he/she do not like it... everybody have their own style and knows what is better for himself. RESPECT is the new deal!

This would be a compelling argument apart from the fact all her clothes look ridiculous and she doesn't own any bras.

AlgeKalipso 8 months ago
Dear world: loosen up, be kind, share, and create/enjoy the beauty! It's not all about money and producing...it's about being ourselves and laughing about it! :)

Summary: Legalize Weed
brod2man 8 months ago 82
@brod2man If hemp was not made illegal to favor cotton, every family would have a jenny and a loom and know how to sew our own clothes.
iamfrancisittv 8 months ago
@iamfrancisittv lol i google'd jenny to see what it was. I got a lot of results.
Also hemp isn't weed. at least not in the effects of smoking it. but im all for legalizing hemp too, stupid oil companies!
brod2man 8 months ago
@brod2man ... spinning jenny ... hemp is not weed but weed is hemp ... I think not many in the west found smoking weed pleasurable before the campaign that publicized it as a recreational drug (could we label it superman coffee trend?). What I find stupid though is they cleared the west of nearly all hemp, but failed to get rid of a bunch of other plants like datura stamonium which is truly dangerous, and no one noticed how pretentious that campaign was.
iamfrancisittv 8 months ago
@iamfrancisittv the west need to start thinking for themselves, a lot of fools drifting about - the alcohol society.
id love to see how a weed society would deal with a lot of these same issues.
what campaign was it that named weed a recreational drug and what was it classed as before that? "Evil Mexican MariHuana?
"

I've been buying shoes at thrift shops for over 20 years and never had foot fungus as a result. Wipe down the interior of the shoes with a damp, slightly soapy rag, spray with Lysol and allow to air dry and they should then be fungus free.

Only a dickhead would have a problem with this. It's a five minute talk for fucks sake. You poor miserable bastards who couldn't imagine themselves being happy in second hand clothes need to find this woman and get a hug. I'm sure she'd be happy to.

SickBang 8 months ago
She's spent at least $ 20 for 7 days worth of clothes - I think it would have been better if she had actually brought back clothes from home and save that money - practicing what she preaches. Plus: she's doing nothing new with the clothes. I found newdressadaydotcom much more inspiring. Merissa buys clothes for $1 and sews them like she wants.

On one side I really like her acceptence of her inner self and her great sense of play. On the other, I dont like how she dresses.
kyral210 8 months ago 2
@kyral210
That's a subjective minor detail, you'd agree. You can easily find heaps of ugly shit on a catwalk just as well. Plus, I quite find it fits her personality, as much as it wouldn't fit mines. But there's probably enough good 2nd hand out there to satisfy us both in different ways.
jehoudas 8 months ago
Wait hold up. She's donating it all to charity before she leaves? what is she going to wear on the plane?
That1GuyWhosNumber1 8 months ago
@That1GuyWhosNumber1 What she wore into TED?
dandined 8 months ago
i see this as a metaphor - in life, one should have self-confidence, be positive, not be afraid to be different, don't get attached to material possessions, willing to let go when necessary, and spending wisely. it's not just about clothes. it's about old age good advice that we all know but forgot to practice in our busy daily struggle for success.
jewellx80 8 months ago 36
@jewellx80 totally agreed. I also took almost the exact some things from the film "Up in the Air" a couple of years ago.
As a minimalist, (computer&science) geek, and freethinker, who also happen to be asocial (not anti) i find i practice most of this in my daily life. The only things in life i'm truely attached to are my immediate family and best friends. The rest are just disposable conveniences. All i need is a place to sleep, food, and a decent computer with a good internet connection.

sanewave 8 months ago
@CoinDl All I'm saying is, I dont think its cool to wear someone elses garbage. Sorry if you dont think I have a right to an opinion thats different than YOURS. But I guess intolerance is your motto.
Speaking of ignorance...the top 3 producers of cotton in the world grow enough cotton to make 31 BILLION large t-shirts. And thats just cotton. Then you have polyester, linen, nylon, acrylic, and acetate which make clothes. So your source that we burn thru more than can be replenished is WRONG!
