this commercial came out the year i was born i see. Came across this while looking at old Christmas commercials (all thought this isnt a Christmas one) i like this commercial bc my favorite animal is an elephant :P lol
They still have Jumbo Video here in Newfoundland! There's one in Mount Pearl, I brought the video "The Best Of Kermit On Sesame Street" there last year. And this one's still got free popcorn! (At least, it did when I last went there, when I brought the aforementioned Kermit video)
Still is. I remember the free popcorn at the one by my house in St. John's, NL (the plaza that used to have K-Mart but still has a Sobeys). Ironically, they since opened a Jumbo Video next to the Sobeys in what used to be an Allan's Video, and I liked renting movies there when Jumbo later became Showtime Video, then Blockbuster.
The one in Moncton, New Brunswick had a massive inflatable version of the mascot on their roof. Well, it got stolen and the police found it later on in someone's garage. Haha.
There's only one in the Toronto area (Queen East). Oddly enough last weekend, I was in the area and saw it and made my friend go in. They didn't have the free popcorn anymore, but it did seem busy. Their VHS selections were incredible.
I think there are few holdouts in the Toronto area. Like Video 99, every rental place got chewed up and spit out by the Blockbusters and Rogers rental places.
Yea, the first time I went into a JUMBO video I remember thinking "Wow! Now this is VHS selection!" and as a teen going with friends at 2 in the morning jus for some FREE popcorn. They need to open more locations... BLOCKBUSTER is crap AND don't even carry XXX titles!
Before Blockbuster moved into my area, Jumbo was considered THE video store among people my age. Getting free popcorn just for browsing made you feel like a real VIP. Even now, video stores without free popcorn seem kind of low-end to me, even though that kind of describes all video stores except Jumbo, and even though walking into a BB or Rogers today is a much more glitzy, high-tech experience than Jumbo was back then.

Some things I remember from the Jumbo Video they used to have in Oakville, Ontario.
1) The section with all the horror movies was a giant castle and I was to afraid to go in there.
2) The smell of stale, cold popcorn in the kids section.
3) Renting nothing but Transformer movies and TV episodes
4) Squeezing the rental cases so the VHS would slide out.

Ah, man, I used to love Jumbo. 2 for 1 rentals and free popcorn!
The days that Jumbo and Gamer's Choice went out of business in my area are 2 days I'll always regret :(

No Jumbo Video's left in Burlington. Their selection for new movies sucked but they always had the classics. And free popcorn!!

I still have my Jumbo Video membership card in my wallet... It'll be nice to keep as a nostalgia item from back in the day.
