What is John Grant on?? Manned space-flight to Mars, or 'Marz' as this guy has embarrassingly misspelt it, is still decades away. And even if it existed now I doubt a forty-something singer songwriter would have the remotest chance of being accepted onto any planned Mars mission by NASA or the Russian Space agency. Dream on, dude.
John had this to say about the track: ‘Marz was a sweet shop from my childhood. It’s now empty and for sale. But I got to visit beforehand, and the woman who served me as a child was still there. They still made all their own candies and ice cream. In the song, I list all the names of the sundaes, and drinks like Green River. The song is about the gateway back to childhood and innocence, before things have become complicated.’ the owner’s name was Marzetti or some such-hence song name.
A natural talent here that cannot be acquired or learnt. Beautiful soulful singing and a gorgeous song. No need for a big light show or big backing sound (as in X factor etc.). The talent does it all. Absolutely gorgeous. Thanks for the post.
@TheNevan60 Hmm. I thought it was deeper than that. Mars being the euphemism for an afterlife where he is reunited with lost loved ones. 'Meet you under the light" adds credence to my theory or maybe I'm over thinking the whole deal. Bloody great chord progression and melody line. I'm hooked.
@anddyx So does that mean that instrumental music is pointless too? Just because the words fit and the melody does too does not equal pointless. The voice is only an instrument and words happen to be what people like to make.......!? I don't get your point at all. Also its meaningless to you because you probably could not write and did not write it.........as pointed out above its about a sweet shop.....maybe it makes more sense now?
@jabeoo1 I was referring to the actual lack of poignancy in the song to evoke such a strong feeling of "I want to go to Marz" even though it's a sweet shop. It could be a tin of cat food he's singing about, I don't care, but I just don't get the pointlessness of it. We've all had memories.
@anddyx just gotta let urself go man, if it makes u feel good aint that the whole point. when u were a kid i bet u sang abt a bunch of nonsense and had the time of ur life :)
@anddyx It's not even about the sweet shop, it's about pining for a lost youth, all the lyrics are the flavors of sundaes that the shop would make. It's in the same genre as something like puff the magic dragon. Childhood is full of nonsensical, amazing and fantastic things and everything appears so fresh and new and exciting as a child and it's over all too quick and songs like this are simply a way to try and claw back a sliver of that.
I can still remember The Czars gig in Valencia in 2002 joining Flaming Lips and Elf Power. John was so kind and gave me The Czars record signed. Great solo album!!
Features in the film Weekend. Really sweet tune.

Such feeling in this song. I'm a drummer so none too smart and was wondering if anyone could tell me exactly what the song is about?
I actually prefer the official video as the synth work on Jools Holland was too cheesy for me.

@Grizzbiz57 Apparently Marz was an ice cream parlour he went to as a child/teenager? - the lyrics are all the flavours they had to offer.
