Yeah, it was rough. When that video was made it was early on in the dyno-tune. The challenge with aggressive cams is rough idles and finding that sweet spot recovery time/tune after revving and letting it get to idle without the rpms getting too low... having the engine die. We had to increase the idle rpms to like 1k to thwart having the engine die coming to a stop in street traffic.
Sounds like it is surging at idle, did you have the car dyno tuned? I've got a mid 240 cam on a 113 in my ls6, and the idle comes right back and stays smooth. BTW, what size cam are you running?
my ride maybe loud... but folks that make the mistake of thinking it's just from a "fart can" muffler... quickly realize it can back up the bark with a lot of bite after blowing by them! it's funny how their facial expressions change to an "oh, snap!" look!!! ;-)
it's actually not just for looks. it functional and cf. it really makes a BIG difference with the added down force. also, it makes it really stable at high speeds. i've had it up to 180mph quite a few times... hee-hee-hee!!! and it's really stable and planted. but for pure dragsters... you wouldn't want the extra aero drag.
it would look cleaner without any aero stuff... but after doing the bodykit... front bumper, canards, side skirts, rear diffuser... it just didn't look consistent without the wing. everything is for function sans the lambo doors... lol!
don't get me wrong... i LOVE the RX7... but i wasn't married to the rotary engine. what drew me to the "7" was the look, chasis, lightweight and perf potential. i wanted both performance AND reliability. i know folks who modded out their 13b and boosted it either blew the motor or even if they didn't when the apex seals needed to get replaced... it was expensive. if i went the LS drivetrain route... instant torque from low-end to redline and excellent reliability.
Chevy LS motors are almost bulletproof. they have real-world, on-the-street and track... usable torque... no need to worry about having to be in the right power band rpm range, boost level for drag , track or street... worrying about overheating if you turned the boost up, etc.
I love both worlds of RX7 modders... hearing the BOV fire or the rotary through the exhaust always puts a smile on my face... but so does hearing a sick-cammed LS motor idling and revved!
Bottom line, it was a matter of personal goals. I'm very happy with the results.
no, b/c the motor is all the way back by the firewall and the t56 trans is at about the center of the car. the swap adds some weight but i countered that by using fg hood, lightweight headlights, momo steering wheel, dumped the crappy bose "soundwave" rear speaker tube, no spare tire and lighter racing seats. trust me, the beast doesn't feel heavier. in fact, it feels extremely nimble and agile and responds quickly to steering, throttle and braking inputs.
it still maintains a nearly 50/50 f/r ratio. i think A LOT of folks would change their minds or, at least, have a better understand of why people would go the ls-route if they had a ride in one. nothing like instant gobs of torque. i feel it's the best of both worlds... awesome japanese lightweight, balanced, stiff chasis/platform with a beast of a drivetrain and power... plus, reliability and gas mileage! it'll get 25mpg on the highway in 6th!
hearing a nasty 13 or 20b idling or revving still makes me smile and say NICE! but, the sound of a sick cammed chevy ls-motor... hits a primal, gutteral, tim-allen-nerve... and i just stop in my tracks with my ears and mouth open! maybe b/c it's b/c i grew up on chevys... but there's just something about them that i just love. the other bonus is... seeing the expressions on folks faces when i pull into a gas station! they see a rx7 but they're confused b/c they hear a chevy v8! ;-)
although im generally against the rotary / LS swapping, i just cant help watching the videos of the LS ones anyway! that sounds superb man, nice work!! but il stick with my wankel
i was the same way... until i researched the perf pkg and potential and the kickers... reliability and instant torque. i looked at how much i was planning on spending to meet my perf goals and the ls-swap was about the same. i definitely don't regret it!
don't get me wrong... i LOVE rotaries! their sound is so unique and i'll always have a soft spot for them... but i also love chevy small blocks too! it just fit exactly what i was looking for as far as perf goals. different strokes for different folks (no pun intended)... ;-)
That poor rx7 has had it's heart ripped out!!! poor thing.

@bliglum yeah they might as well call this car ironman now because the heart they put in was a lot stronger

What makes an RX-7 is the rotary. SO if your going to swap another engine in an RX-7 don't fucking buy one. Keep rotaries in RX-7's !

Damn, that sound is so unexpected, lol. I own an LS1 myself, only a T/A.. What kind of exhaust is that?
lethalxwisdom 3 years ago
it's a custom single 4" with a magnaflow muffler.

well the car looks and sounds sick man, but IMO it would look alot better without the wing.

WHY???
yeah its fast...
but im sure for the money you spent on that you could go just as fast in a rotary...
the 13btt would do it
and so would the 20b
why buy a special car like this and ruin its spirit?

How'd you clear the scoot hood (scoop) with the intake etc.. right there ? An I'm assuming Hinson Kit ? Or was it Grants ?
amaraklov 4 years ago
;-) i had to remove the scoop tunnel (under the hood) and dremel off some of the hood scoop to clear the custom hard aluminum intake.
