I think had Obama just told us what he believes, and that he differs from his pastor and good friend on issue A, B, and C, the two of them (whose friendship are not built upon adherence to issue A, B, and C) would not have had to distance themselves from one another.

Instead, he tried to feel his way out of this, and further the suspicions that 1.) no one knows who Obama is and 2.) Obama isn't really sure who he is, or what he believes.

allxdeamer. I LOVE Malcolm X. He was exhiled from the Nation of Islam and then took a religios trip to Mecca where he met muslims of all ethnicities. This is when he reformed his political views and spoke internationally and stateside of equality "by any means neccessary" and uniting under righteousness. You should read his autobiography, by Alex Haley. I let my 7 year old write a paper about him.

I find it phoney that Obama claims to not know and subscribe to the viewpoints of a preacher he has listened to for 20 years. That's just phoney. Phoney, as in BS, as in a lie, as in (perhaps) an agenda.

There is nothing phoney about agreeing to disagree. Obama may verywell disgree With the statements that Pastor Wright said. does not mean they aren't true. Pastor Wright is a great man of God, his life has shown that. Thats why Obama has been there for 20 yrs. It take a hell of a man, to stand there & say what Wright said. The world will always hate anyone that points out its injustice. Thats why they hated JESUS & if you are following Jesus correctly, the world should hate you also.

Um...it's not that uncommon a thing. I know people who have gone to a church for YEARS and don't believe half (if any) of what the preacher says.

But that's not the case here, is it? Obama gives this man credit for "leading me to Christ" and until now, he was the campaign's spiritual advisor. So this guy is a formative influence on him, not just a talking head in a pulpit he only half listens to. He only denounced this advisor when it looked bad for the campaign. Before that he tried the "I don't know, I wasn't there" card, which I am calling dishonest as this clearly was not one isolated sermon that he just happened to miss.

Personally, I think you're looking for ANY reason to avoid voting for Obama, even if it means voting for someone who agrees with tampering with the voting process and someone else who'll probably reinstitute the draft and send everyone and their brother to Iraq. One hundred years is a long time and the "willing and able" have to come from somewhere.

You couldn't be further from the truth about me. I was giving up on Hillary and taking a second look at Obama right before this story broke. And I actually preferred his stance on healthcare over Hillary's. My concern with this story is identical to my prior concern about Romney--they are free to believe in whatever they want, but I am free to not vote for people whose belief systems seem irrational. Is he as bad as Romney? Probably not, but I want more time to decide, or another choice.Gore'08!

I was leaning towards Obama myself till this story broke. I just can't in good conscience vote for Obama now. I wish we could get Gore in there.
