The tests we have are EXTREMELY accurate within their limitations.

Screening tests typically test for antibodies, and are fast and cheap. They also give a lot of false positives. So you use them to quickly RULE OUT HIV exposure.

A person who has a negative screen has most likely not been exposed to HIV. Repeat that test at 6 mos and a year, and if it is still negative, you can be pretty sure they don't have HIV.

Use 2 different screens at 6 mos & a year and if they come out negative, you can be pretty confident they have not been exposed to HIV.

If they are positive, that DOES NOT mean they have HIV, it means that you could not rule HIV OUT.

Then use a diagnostic test or two. They test other aspects of the disease & rarely give false positives, so you use them to rule HIV in, or diagnose.

Used together, correctly, they diagnosis is over 99.9999% accurate.

Less than 1 in 1,000,000 false positive.

The diagnostic tests test for a wide variety of characteristics including DNA, RNA, non-antibody proteins, & antibodies.

There is no need for one. There are dozens of good tests for HIV and all of them are highly sensitive. Their specificities vary with the purpose of the test.

Suffice to say modern testing can accurately determine your HIV status to FAR more than 99% certainty.

It is part of their effort to cause people to question the accuracy of HIV testing, and in some cases, the existence of HIV.

Diagnose broken bone - It is really an art, not a science. Look at enough x-rays, and you can spot them pretty easily, but there is no "standard" for recognizing them.

salamalekos - For staph - Dozens of methods have been demonstrated beyond all reasonable doubt to be accurate. No need for "a standard" because any competent lab can easily and reliably identify staph.

For HIV. There are dozens of reliable, accurate methods & tests for HIV infection. Also, the science is quickly evolving, a "standard" could never keep up. Instead there are guidelines.

Ours is 2 screens and 2 diagnostic tests testing for different aspects of the virus if screens positive.

Safest would be to have your own blood stored, but since that's mostly out of the question, then to receive a HEALTHY sibling's blood. No Blood Transfusion service, pathologist or virologist is capable of detecting 'AIDS' as it's portrayed by the media, because no such test exists -yet any one of NUMEROUS AutoImmune conditions could easily be contracted.

Taking the AIDS test is a good first step, they'll have to do more but these men are motivatd and I beleive that progress can be made through more education and promotion of safe sex.
