My name is David, too...and my mother basically did the same thing to me. And I was not even a "mecha". A.I. was one of the most heart-wrenching movies I've ever watched. This is much more than science fiction - there really ARE people who would do this. The final scene is the most tragic because it's only a fake scenario created by benevolent aliens to make a mistreated little being (the one good vestige of humanity left) completely happy for one day.
