@Thearl It was. When the Brits fed Christians to the lions, they would sell out fast poor people outside would trade tickets their for the wigs the rich people use to wear. Thus, the name "scalping" was born.
@newcolonyfreak1 But you see it right here, in writing no less! You have seriously hurt my feelings. Would you ask your minister if he has a photograph of Jesus? There is so much distrust in the world by people who always have to "see it to believe it". I will re-post this song this weekend with the pic of the label. Thankfully I have it available since most of my 45s are in no order whatsoever. I guess then you'll say "photo shop". Anyway, I will do my best.
Gee...Your story is very odd.- I've personally spoken to Larry several times about his career, and he never told me anything about your version of this.-Larry gave me a completely different scenario as to why he quit the music biz.- In any case, I have both "Promo" and "Stock" copies of this 45, and they BOTH list the title as, "The Return Of Mr.Custer", so that what it is as far as I'm concerned.
@newcolonyfreak1 You have the early editions prior to all the hoopla. Besides, Custer was killed in his first attack on Sitting Bull. Historically, the record was incorrect in addition to a slap in the face to them Injuns. At least by changing the title, it made the song more believable; at least as it appeared in record stores. Of course, once people brought it home, they were outraged. So between them and the injuns, it became a big mess and Larry just walked away from all of it.
The ACTUAL title of this song is, "The Return Of Mr.Custer"...I have the single on the ERA label.- It was Larry Verne's last '45 release, and is quite difficult to find in any condition.
@newcolonyfreak1 It is my understanding that the Custer family sued for royalties and therefore, since we killed off all of Sitting Bull's heirs, it was a very wise move that Verne's agent, (Col. Parker) changed the title and of course there was a big deal about Verne performing this song in red face tastefully decorated in war paint thus, bringing an abrupt ending to his career as one of the greatest singers of all time.
I've heard the first one a long time ago, and I never knew he made a sequel. This is hilarious!

Thanks for the post. You know, I read that scalping was actually a British custom.

I've been collecting Larry Verne for many years, and I've never seen a copy of this with
the supposed re-vamped title of the song....I'd like to see a scan of the label of the 45
with the new title, if one really does exist.- Until I actually see one, I won't believe it.
