Lesley Duncan was one of the most underrated artists of our time. While this version of her classic is probably her best known work it's far from her best work. It's sad that she has passed from this earth and we will hear no more from her unless there are some unreleased gems we've yet to hear.
Perhaps the best known and best version of this song save this one is the Live version Elton John did on the "Here & There" Live LP. Check it out.
@manygate10 Actually though Elton's version is better known, it's her song. She wrote it, and sang background vocals and played the guitar on Elton's version.
@brightonbreezy Thanks for this. I knew she sang backing vocals on Elton's track, though didn't know she also played guitar on it. Something tells me though that I should have known she wrote it!
i loved this song for years and years just searched her nameand this song to find she has passed on. bless her memory and the happiness she has brought me, as i have sung this on many happy and sad occasions RPI LD X
Lesley has had a long-standing group of fans with a web presence. If you are interested in finding out more and joining in celebrations of her music, look for lesleyduncan4scorner on yahoo groups, lesleyduncan on myspace. There is also a facebook page. All of these sites have links to her main fan website.
I have loved this lady's music, lyrics and voice since the late sixties, having read all the kind words left in 'Recent comments' I am sure she is smiling in the knowledge that she was truly loved, God Bless you Lesley X
Hows about putting this & sing children sing up for sale on I.tunes via you tube?
It's a downright shame such 2 beautiful songs are so hard to get. I think Lesley will now be rightly recognized for her talent after her passing, like Sandy Denny, Duncan Browne & Nick Drake
God is looking after you now without any more pain, thanks for the beautiful music you left behind, you are one of those singer/song writers who were never fully appreciated in their lifetime, like Duncan Browne Sandy Denny & Nick Drake. Like their music yours will go on & on & get more respect over time. Sing Children Sing is just pure bliss, a perfect song, hope to see it on youtube soon. Thanks for your music & beautiful voice, you'll be sadly missed.
Rest in peace my dear Lesley. I wish I could thank her for writing my favorite song. Now she is gone and the voice is silenced. We will be listening and singing along for as long as we live, (and maybe beyond). Maybe I can take solace in that thought. They keep dying and it is getting to me. I feel more alone each time. Where do they go?
she was a real singer not like todays rubbish a bit like terry reid unknown but have cult following,id never heard of lesley till alan parsons eve album if i could change your mind is one of my faverate songs of all time rest in peace sweetheart
omg I used to have this on a cassette compilation when I was at Dundee Uni back in 74(ish). I lost the tape a while back but if I recall correctly it also contained the Doors, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Simon and Garfunkel (the Only Living Boy in New York). Shouldn't be too difficult to re-create that on MP3... Happy days :)
I continue to be amazed at what there is to learn on You tube (and Facebook). Someone posted Elton's version, and I started searching, and learned about this, and now Lani Hall, Herb Alpert's version. All distinctive and beautiful in their own way..
I recently came across her album and the songs are absolutely inspiring. I sell albums on ebay and decided to keep this one until I record it for my personal collection. She came out during the peace & love movement that was so popular during the war. I amazed she did not become more well known. Her songs apply today just as easily as then. It would be great to have them played more often and stir the people to peace!
beautiful song by Lesley. I have to say though I think Elton's version is better, but only because it was better mixed in the studio. The double tracked vocals on Lesley's recording are a bit harsh.
such a beautiful song. until 'you tube' i was only familiar with the elton john version (tumble weed album). this is just as good. probably wont be long before some fucker ruins it with a 'dance version'!!
The song is really good. I used to have her album Everything Changes which was brilliant, including the title track, which was briefly in a film recently.
I've heard most versions.. the only one I like better than this is the one by Ann & Nancy Wilson (formerly of Heart) that they did on the pbs special (it's on the dvd they sell of it. wish someone would post it on youtube.)
Sheila Nicholls version is the absolute best beyond a doubt. It was used in an episode of Smallville in Season 2. If you search on YouTube for 'Clana-Love Song' there is a video with the song...its beautiful. It is off of her CD 'Wake'.
Sheila Nicholls version is the absolute best beyond a doubt. It was used in an episode of Smallville in Season 2. If you search on YouTube for Clana there is a video with the song...its beautiful. It is off of her CD 'Wake'.
lenihan69: I liked the Clana version very much (the video steamed up my glasses!) but it doesn't come close to the beauty of Lesley Duncan's version (the best there is & she's the composer!), followed by Olivia Newton John, and then Elton John.
Looked all over this, its one of those songs you keep hearing and cannot remember who sang it!! Is this the version that charted? it sounds different?
Yes, it's difficult to find. The version(s) you may be familiar with are: Olivia Newton John on a 70's TV special and Elton John on his 'Tumbleweed Connection' album.
Until he recorded "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds", this was the only non-Elton penned song on an Elton John album. It must have impressed him greatly to include it.
MusicMadMaurice: You're right. This was the only non-penned Elton song that he recorded on an album until he recorded LSD. In fact, Elton was so impressed with Lesley that he sat in as a session musician (piano) on the Lesley's 1971 album which included Love Song.
Here's some trivia: Elton recorded 4 Nick Drake songs in 1970. They were released a couple of years ago. You're correct though: it wasn't really an Elton John Album per se; it was a promotional stunt to get publicity for his label-mates, set up by Joe Boyd. He recorded Day Is Done, Saturday Sun, Way To Blue and Time Has Told Me. The EP (incorrectly) included Sweet Honesty as an ND song, but that was actually Beverly Martyn's. They're great recordings IMO.
Please lose the annoying add. Crikes!
