In terms of size it is comparable to the LR4, the problem here is the Mercedes Benz, they should have compared the ML instead of the GL. The Mercedes GL is a rival to the larger segment of luxury SUVs such as the Lexus LX, Range Rover and Infiniti QX56.
The LR4 is heads and tails above the rest. Even The Range Rover when it comes to off-road capabilities. Land Rover built it first and foremost to be an off road vehicle and set out to make it more off road capable then the Range Rover. That's what this comparison was all about... an off road vehicle being used as an off road vehicle.

The Crown Victoria is SOLD to police, taxi and government fleets from the factory. There's a very small private market for these cars and they're usually sold to older people who prefer a comfortable and powerful sedan. It's a unique situation for the Crown Victoria and the Mercury Grand Marquis. Toyota still sucks and their owners don't know a good car when they see one. Toyota owners just care about value and reliability. That's it. Not design or fun or coolness.

The Camry and Accord sell well based on value. You get a lot of car for little money. Reliability isn't the primary reason. And the Camry isn't that great. My '97 Camry was crap and I know a few people who have had some issues with their Camry's. No shit the G class is "outdated". It's been made since 1979 with various technical upgrades. On the other hand it is still a MODERN 4WD SUV that can hang with the best. The GL is great offroad, right up there with the Landcruiser IF IT HAS THE OPTIONAL range gearbox. Besides, how many people in the US take their Land Cruiser off road these days? Zero. The Land Cruiser has mutated into a fat luxury pig of a car. The cheap stripper versions aren't sold here in the US.
That's unfair. The GL was not equipped with the offroad package that includes a transfer case, centre and rear locking differentials. It would smoke that Lexus at off-roading.

Awesome review, and sums up Land Rovers' philosophy perfectly.. there will always be a trade-off for vehicles with this type of capability, but Motor Trend is brave enough to state what only Land Rover owners really know; despite the few negatives and its' dismal fuel economy.... you won't care.
There's something about the feeling you get when you climb into a vehicle you KNOW will get you anywhere.. through anything.. every time. It's a priceless feeling, and one which is worth every penny.

@sourjerer Not really the Land cruiser shares the same platform as the Lexus LX while the GX is based off the Toyota 4 runner. In terms of size it is comparable to the LR4, the problem here is the Mercedes Benz, they should have compared the ML instead of the GL. The Mercedes GL is a rival to the larger segment of luxury SUVs such as the Lexus LX, Range Rover and Infiniti QX56.

Second, Crown Victoria's are very reliable and durable and that is the REASON why they're used as taxis, police and government fleet cars in the USA. The Crown Victoria is SOLD to police, taxi and government fleets from the factory. There's a very small private market for these cars and they're usually sold to older people who prefer a comfortable and powerful sedan. It's a unique situation for the Crown Victoria and the Mercury Grand Marquis. Toyota still sucks and their owners don't know a good car when they see one. Toyota owners just care about value and reliability. That's it. Not design or fun or coolness.

The Camry and Accord sell well based on value. You get a lot of car for little money. Reliability isn't the primary reason. And the Camry isn't that great. My '97 Camry was crap and I know a few people who have had some issues with their Camry's. No shit the G class is "outdated". It's been made since 1979 with various technical upgrades. On the other hand it is still a MODERN 4WD SUV that can hang with the best. The GL is great offroad, right up there with the Landcruiser IF IT HAS THE OPTIONAL range gearbox. Besides, how many people in the US take their Land Cruiser off road these days? Zero. I have owner the LR3 and LR4.. and I was very impressed by the LR3 5 years ago. Howver, the LR3 had some quality issues. When the lease was up, I was not set on another Land Rover. I looked at the BMW X5, Lexus GX, Mercedes GL and the new LR4.
What I found was that of the bunch, we still love it best. The LR4 was SO different from the LR3. I wound up buying it and love it WAY more than the LR3. And no quality issues with this one at all. BTW, I did offroad my LR3, and plan to with this one too.

Get the Mercedes out of there it is no off road vehicle.
