I have seen the Aurora Australis in mainland Oz. In Canberra can't remember if it was Winter of 88 or 89. The sky to the South was really bright about 8pm one evening looked like there was a light show on in the mountains. Next morning on the news it was mentioned and explained as a very rare phenomenon.
