John told Paul just before this show that he was going to do this routine, but he told Paul he was going to say "the rest of you just rattle your fucking jewellery". I'll bet when John started to speak onstage Paulie was shitting himself. Just imagine if he'd said what he was going to say? It would have been a bigger scandal than Steve Jones calling Bill Grundy a fucking rotter on live telly in 1977 LOL.
this was they're 1st performance for the royal's, and, u have no idea how rough a life Lennon had, growing-up, in that shit-hole of Liverpool, so, it was a a one-two punch for Lennon, acknowledging where he came-from, and, showing the rich that he had made-it big.
@Sportster20042001 John Lennon didn't have a rough life (of course he did with his Mum dying etc but I mean his actual environmental surroundings). Thorough misconception. Mimi was a middle class woman, living in a middle class house in a middle class part of Liverpool.
@Rafaperches that show was the royal variety show. at that time, jokes like that were kinda rude. what makes it funny is that 95% of that theater was either filthy rich or was part of the royal family. imagine if you were in a band in concert surrounded with billionaires. would you say that to them?
@Rafaperches He's saying in other words, since your rich, you have jewelry, so rattle it. As poor people don't have jewelry and could afford cheaper seats
@Rafaperches I think John asks the audience: for the ones sitting in the cheapest seats please to clamp your hands, and the rest of you (expensive seats) rattle your jewerly.
@Rafaperches This was when they performed on The Royal Variety Show and the majority of the audience were very rich, including the Queen Mother and Princess Margeret, both there as representatives of the Queen, and so it was John's snipe at those people. I remember the newspapers the next, and subsequent days, being full of it (Incuding front page main story in all of them). For weeks later comedians [on TV] incorperated it in gags. It was a huge thing over here.
AHAHAHAHAHA XD John does such a face after saying this that the queen couldn't help but smiling... I love this guys So much. That's right, best quote ever!

@Rafaperches because the people that were just clapping there hands were suppose to be poor and the ones with the jewelry are are suppose to be rich.
