Manilla John Basilone could only be stopped by a mortar... No man ever took him down face to face, what does this tell you about war. I have the utmost respect for this man, I cant even sleep Im in such awe of him, how did I never know this name before now
My Dad was a WWII vet and a DI so I grew up hearing about Sergeant Basilone.
He took on over 1000 elite Japanese troops. You have to appreciate that the Japanese had never been defeated and thought Americans were soft. Then they met Chesty Pullers Marines and John Basilone. After that day, they were beaten at every turn I guess the Americans werent so soft
I just learned that HBO is releasing a 10 miniseries next year featuring Sargent Basilone and Chesty Puller. It will be along the lines of "Band of Brothers"

Everyone must be aware, John Basilone Is the Only American Fighting man to be awarded the Medal Of Honor, Then to return to combat and then be Killed in Action,Also he is the only Marine and Enlisted man to have an annual Parade in his honor in NJ, EVERY YEAR
With all due respect how can he be your grandfather when John Basilone had no children. He lost that privelege when he died for his cause. He was newly married before he was shipped off again ( his choice) to be killed in action? You might be a distant relative or something but grandfather I don't think so..
I hate to be the one to tell you this, but Johnny didn't have any kids. I'm one of his many great grand nieces and grew up in Raritan, NJ. I went to the parade every Sept. and new all of his living siblings. If he had any children I'm sure his family would have known about it.
GySgt Manila John Basilone is one of my heros and insipartions. He mowed down wave after wave of oncoming Japs and held off 3,000 of em. During the invasion of Iwo Jima he said to his men "Weve got to get these guns off the beach" and ran up the hill and was blown to bits by a mortar. He was the only Marine in WWII to get the medal of honor, navy cross and purple heart. He was also a boxer and on his arm was tattooed "Death before Dishonor". These guys are amazing.
He is one of my heroes to :D too bad he was killed on iwo :( he wasnt blown up, he was killed by a burst of shrapnel. I saw a documentary of iwo some years ago and one of his buddys said how he died and so on :D Audie Murphy is my biggest hero!! they were both awesome! R.I.P!!
Hollywood seems to have cheapen the Congressional Medal Of Honor, like everyone has one, in movies. If you read action reports of what these men did its amazing
yes they did but used her as a target off the coast--sank her for target practise--i was proud to serve on her--was on her for 2-1/2 yrs--we could do 29 knots on 2 boilers--
