I don't think most Americans appreciate how culturally important Oasis are/were, just like I don't think most Brits appreciate the importance of the tight knit scene (SF/Gilman St.) Green Day was born of.

My two cents: Oasis AND Green Day are great bands, but inferior to many of their peers. For Mancunian bands: The Stone Roses, Joy Division, The Smiths, and for Gilman St. bands: Jawbreaker, Operation Ivy, J Church. (I'm an American that spent time in Manchester, if you were wondering.)

think of it as Sex Pistols, they were considered a punk band. But bands such as Black Flag, MDC, & Flipper tried to stray from that & made up Hardcore Punk.

Green Day aren't on the sidelines of any of that. They're just rock, not really punk. Their image says otherwise to the youth of today. But being punk doesn't mean you have to look it.

Hating the government doesn't make you punk either.
