very lovely place. i wish the US looked more like that. old and pretty. there are pieces like that hidden away or far from me. i'd like to see more of it though. the look of the US is very bland, often sterile and often disgusting and most places look much too similar to each other. it's a little sad, considering there are so many things could be done with buildings and nature and... yeah.
Mentions of the skeleton, busting out in random places reminds me of Ender's Game and Norse mythology, the skeletons of giants that slowly became part of the landscape.
It's interesting to see my home town from the perspective of a tourist, you really seemed to focus on the good points, whereas over the years I've noticed far too much of the bad.
I live in Exeter, and frequent the cathederal. but when I saw it in your video the other day, I didn't even recognise that it was our cathederal. EMBARRASSED!! hahahaa
@TalmaesWorld Another Exeter Nerdfighter!!! Awesome. I held a gathering there last April. There are so many of us in this part of the world. I'm always plesently suprised.
@micemuncher I hope you won't think this is too much of a shameless plug but I noticed you're a nerdfighter studying in Exeter. So am I. I'm Studying Drama at Cygnet Training Theatre. I organized the first Exeter Nerdfighter gathering last April. So great to know there are more of us in this part of the world.
@TheDriftwoodPuppet81 Unfortunatly no. :( It closed down a few months ago and the guy running it moved to Huddersfield. Its where I took my first gathering that I organized.
Your city is absolutely beautiful! Yea, I think the closest thing to a city that visibly old in the U.S. would be any of the cities in New England (Boston, Phillie, etc.) Still, they wouldn't be nearly 800 years old or anything ...
Also, lack of TFiOS is frustrating. My copy was one of the LEAKED ones and it still has not arrived. Feel like my ancestors must have felt when they first travelled to New Zealand. :/
I do enjoy the contemplativeness and sadness old structures bring. Much of the old part of my town was flooded when the river was damned in the 1980s. Had a wonderful and rare (as it was irl) conversation today with a kindred spirit in some ruins of old town. Sat on window sill of a mysterious building by lake and talked of poetry. Also observed the ruins of old Atheneum library and dancing hall which was "taken for the generation of electricity". Your adventures reminded me of my own.
Fucking hell Exeter is fantastic to say, I love the name so much, the way it's said.. Exeter.. agh brilliant, I just say it to my brother sometimes just for the sheer sex of it, when he's on about football (which I don't really care about) I'm like "What was the score of the Exeter match?" and whenever he looks at me in disbelief and bewilderment and is like "i dunno"
This makes me want to live in Europe even more. I'm fascinated by how old and beautiful everything is there, as opposed to the NEWNESS of Canada and the US. Sigh.
Haha, it looked a bit like you did the makaton sign for thank you at the end. Because of teaching my little disabled sister it, even though I've been away at uni for two years I still sign thank you whenever I say it.
ooh your town is Exeter? I was in Barnstaple the other day, was thinking of having a lurk around Exe too. It's so busy somedays though...felt busier than London at rush hour last time I visited!
I was kinda a tourist in my own town yesterday since my mom told me basically to not come home until 3 hrs after I finished school, since she had a large meeting at our house. It didn't turn out to good or bad. I didn't know where to go, and I didn't want to go to places I go typically, but I just went on the subway to the next stop and walked all the way home (which took maybe an hour?). In a way since I was sorta lost and didn't know what to do it was a unique experience!
Just as you try to crop out the modern, I noticed on a recent trip that I rather prefer photos with no people. But people are a central part to my experience of places I go so I wonder why, when it comes to photographing places, I wish they weren't there? What am I trying to capture exactly?
@meggietherainbowkid As do I. That's cool, I'm from Newton Abbot. I held a gathering in Exeter last April. Its awesome to find other You Tubers close to me. :)
@Nemneyy I hope to. Its just a case of time. I'm at Cygnet Training Theatre at the moment. That is keeping me pretty busy but I really want to soon. There are a load of other people on here from exeter, maybe we should see how many of them we can get.

I will be visiting the UK for the first time in my life in just 11 short weeks. I will be staying with a friend who goes to theatre school in Exeter and we will be visiting there. I can't wait! Thanks for the sneak peek!
omg i can't believe you're from exeter, i never knew that, i live in exeter!!!! This is so crazy, i know everywhere you filmed, i love that door too! And gandy street is great :)
@JeMappelleHannah I don't think Rosianna's actually from Exeter, she just goes to school there? As far as I know, she's lived in London for most of her life.
@TheHannah641 There will be another one just as soon as I can get a free weekend. In the mean time I could put you in touch with other local and semi local Nerdfighters/Youtubers if you like.
Really good video! I'm obsessed with old cities. One of the best things about Europe. However, and maybe I'm showing my ignorance here..I thought you were from London? Sorry!
how beautiful, rosi! i would really love to live around such ancient buildings with so much history. it is unfortunate to live in such a new city (even for the U.S.) like Miami where a lot architecture is rather boring. it's lovely to see a new video from you every day [: -julian
Exeter and the surrounding countryside is certainly beautiful if you look in the right places. A lot of its easily overlooked or tucked away in secret places but that makes it more exciting when it is noticed, even better if there's a story or two behind it.
I loved hearing your views about the book, I forced my mum to read it and she loved it! Unfortunately my cover still hasn't arrived so I borrowed a friends, I can't wait to get mine so I can HIGHLIGHT.
Rosiiiii why are you doing this to me =( 3 videos featuring Exeter in a week!
Have you been on the Redcoat tour that goes from Cathedral Green? My housemates & I went half as a joke the year before last & we actually found out some really interesting things! Like I never noticed there's a marker for where there used to be a gate onto the Cathedral grounds.
p.s. I bought TFiOS today on your recommendation, it had better be good! =P (Though I've not heard a single negative thing about it so far)
I loved what you said about the lack of old things in the US. I've lived in the US my entire life, and the history that surrounds everyday life in Europe was one of my favorite things that I noticed when I visited. Where I live (Minnesota) there are very few buildings more than 100 years old, and it often really bothers me.
Do you live in Exeter? I know no Youtubers that live so far West! I feel so far away down in little old Cornwall. I know someone who works in Shakeaway in Exeter and occasionally has to dress up as a milkshake... this could be fun.
Love the description of the old and new especially the metaphor of a "skeleton." That sounds like I'm writing something for school, but anyway, really like your vids, keep up the good work!
I'm doing something like new year's revolution as well. I was actually inspired by this. I have lots of simple resolutions that I will do for the whole year, and I'm confident I can do them because they're very simple like helping strangers, cook breakfast for mom, etc. I'm hoping they will become a habit than just a one time thing.
I absolutely adore you and these videos!!! I really wish I could do all these daily tasks, but my city doesn't have good public transportation and I can't drive yet :(
Do you think that it is something I could do later in the year... like over the summer?
I live near Ely, so we walk past the Cathedral there a lot. There's this really long wall that's made up lots of different bricks and broken stone work and stuff. I don't look at it that much, but my Mum was with me the other day, and she pointed out all this stuff about it, so we stood there looking at it for ages.
@Antworkk I'm studying in Exeter at the moment. I held a Nerdfighter gathering there last April. Its great to know that there are even more of us in this part of the world.
I didn't know you went to uni in Exeter. I live in Devon too and I always think of Youtube as pretty distant, since half of you seem to live in London. Probably untrue, but it's always how I think of it. Have you been to the Bikeshed theatre? If not, seriously do, it's well worth it.
I went to Paignton zoo with my best friend to be touristy. It was very fun. It's actuallly better in winter because it's a lot quieter, so more of the timid animals are out.
... god I miss Shakeaway. My friend met her boyfriend/fiancee when he was working there when we were studying in Oxford and now it went out of business :(
Rosianna, you have no idea in how lucky you are to live in Exeter. I go to Devon, Cornwall, and Exeter every year, and have been since I was 3 months old. When I go there is always something very different about it (One of them is that it is, very old) but the air just seems so much different, and the beaches. I live in Manchester so I never get to experience that feeling, apart from when I go on holiday. I just wish I could be as lucky as you, to live there.
Exeter looks a lot like Canterbury in terms of being a proper old town, if you've never been there it's a nice place to visit and obviously has a cathederal too.
Where I live there seems to be a trend of renaming pubs which is killing small bits of local history which is a real shame. Is that a UK wide thing or just here?
how do you do that? just, pop out a "thoughts from places" type of video basically everyday? ah so awesome. also Exeter seems great ! keep on keeping on, please
I love this idea so much but unfortunately, I live in a village with really no tourist attractions...probably wont be able to do this myself lol :) I could check out the church I guess, pretty old, 13th century, I went with my primary school when I was really little and haven't been since...I suppose living in a place for all your life means you don't really pay attention to what is actually there. I really liked this video. :)
@fairydustem I use Lex's old video camera! I used to use a lumix but for some reason it didn't like filming more than a minute and a half, so now I use Lex's old panasonic HDC SD20
i remember some of parts of Exeter :) I I visited it many years ago. Lovely town. I totally agree with you that it's a pity there aren't really old buildings in the states.
In April of last Year I held the first Exeter Nerdfighter gathering on the Cathedral Green. We left notes in the John Green books in Waterstones. Wandered down Parliament street and visited the (alas no longer there) Doctor Who store.
@JeMappelleHannah I'd love that. I'm difinitely going to be doing more in the future. Its very much dependant on when I have free time to do it. I'm Currently studying Drama at Cygnet Training Theatre in Exeter and that takes up an awful lot of my time but I'm not the only Exeter You Tuber. Jmemerson and GaiashKetoji also live there and I'm finding loads more in the comment section of this video. Have a look out for them.
It's quite nice to look at your own city while pretending to be a tourist. You see a lot more than you would have otherwise. I always get surprised when I look really look around my own city and see things that on any other day I wouldn't have noticed.
When you started reading the 'whosoever' slabs, I thought at first they had the lyrics from Thriller on them (whosoever shall be found without the soul for getting down...), and I was strangely disappointed that they don't. *nods*
(hi, i'm catching up on youtube today)

I live near Ely, so we walk past the Cathedral there a lot. There's this really long wall that's made up lots of different bricks and broken stone work and stuff. I don't look at it that much, but my Mum was with me the other day, and she pointed out all this stuff about it, so we stood there looking at it for ages.

@Antworkk I'm studying in Exeter at the moment. I held a Nerdfighter gathering there last April. Its great to know that there are even more of us in this part of the world.
grnlfe01 1 month ago
@grnlfe01 I actually live near Ely, not Exeter, but yeah, close enough. :)
Antworkk 1 month ago
@Antworkk Ely? Where is that in relation to Exeter?
grnlfe01 1 month ago
@grnlfe01 265 miles away in East Anglia, Cambridgeshire.
Antworkk 1 month ago
@Antworkk Ouch, ok, I thought you meant Exeter cathedral. Sorry about that.

@grnlfe01 Hah, don't worry - they are both awesome places.

@iliveinmyhead You Tube is not Distant. I've been to 3 gatherings in Exeter one of which I organized. And I've been to 3 in Plymouth.

... god I miss Shakeaway. My friend met her boyfriend/fiancee when he was working there when we were studying in Oxford and now it went out of business :(

I live a single bus journey away from here, it's kinda weird seeing it pop up in my uploads.

The end of January is going to suck when I don't have a video a day to watch!

So, you've been my favourite Youtuber for a while now and I only just found out that you live in Exeter which is about 50 miles away from me - crazy!

Ironballs69 1 month ago
how do you do that? just, pop out a "thoughts from places" type of video basically everyday? ah so awesome. also Exeter seems great ! keep on keeping on, please
projectrunwei 1 month ago
I love this idea so much but unfortunately, I live in a village with really no tourist attractions...probably wont be able to do this myself lol :) I could check out the church I guess, pretty old, 13th century, I went with my primary school when I was really little and haven't been since...I suppose living in a place for all your life means you don't really pay attention to what is actually there. I really liked this video. :)

do you mind me asking what camera you use, I have a kodak playsport but the quality doesn't seem as good as this :)

@grnlfe01 I live in Exeter so, are you holding any more of those any time soon? If so I'd be well up for soming :)

*nods*

Also, this reminds me of TFIOS, living in a city built by the dead and all. Very interesting.

@defense360 haha it's absolutely on the brain, as is the beginning of High Wind in Jamaica which talks a lot about ruins.
