@LisaLovesSummer it wasoriginally called 'Stone Love' but there was an error during the printing. if yu listen closely yu hear they don't even sing 'stoned love' they say 'stone lovee'. this is one of my absolute FAVORITE post-Diana Supremes' hits.
@LokoLexx01 Yes, I get it now! LIke Jesus CHrist said upon this "ROCK" I will build my Church!! Talking to Peter, petra, ROCK. Solid foundation, set in stone, a love that never dies!
I love this, all their songs will never be touched. I attended a wedding recently and their songs are always played , a caucasion wedding , yes, you heard it, every one I have ever been to have played MOTOWN, it's magic.
I was working as a stagehand at the Marriot World Center in Orlando the night the invasion of Iraq took place. That show was consisting of the band, The Funk Brothers and I met them and Mary Wilson was there too, she was lovely. ;)
My second favorite grouping of the Supremes: Jean, Mary, and Cindy. My favorite: Diana, Mary, and Flo. But, of all my favorite Supremes songs: Stoned Love is #1! Thank you for posting the full version from the Supremes second lp with Jean: New Ways but Love Stays.
@emma5977 I like this part Life is so short Put the present time at hand Aww yeah--and if you're young at heart Rise up and take your stand And to the man On whose shoulder The world must depend I pray for peace and love--Amen Oooh--can't ya feel it--mmm hmm Stoned Love I tell ya I ain't got no other Ahh haa Stoned Love Aww yeah If the war 'tween our nations passed--oh yeah Will the love 'tween our brothers and sisters last? On and on and on and on and....
This is a great song but for me, the Supremes will always be Diana, Flo and Mary. Jean Terrell was a very good replacement for Diana Ross but the original group set the standard that no other female group has ever matched.
Very strange, at least to me, it's such a gem of a song and I think it was quite a hit at its time but no other artist has covered it... this song got it all, great rhythm & good lyrics.
There are several different short versions, all of which sound incomplete. Four minute singles were not unusual at the start of the 70s. Perhaps I can understand the single starting at "Stoned Love", ie without Jean Terrell's full chant, but why cut out the 20 second instrumental?
4 minute singles by black artist getting played on AM radio were mind-bogglingly rare in the USA throughout the 1960s and 70s; the exceptions were almost always by white artists.
That is simply the true history of America at the time. All the corporate record labels carrying large rosters of black artists edited mightily to keep the 45s under 4...even under 3.5 minutes: Motown, Atlantic, Stax, Columbia/CBS.
Mind you, there was also Papa Was A Rolling Stone by the Temptations, the short version of which was seven minutes! That certainly got played in the UK.
As for the USA, the only long songs I know being played in the 60s were Macarthur Park by Richard Harris and Hey Jude by the Beatles, not that I'm an expert!
Just so so good to hear the full proper length version of this quite brilliant record. Loved Diana, loved Mary, loved Cindy, but this girl Jean was the bollocks!!! Pax to all from Ian Smith. Xxx.
This would be one of my 'Desert Island Discs' Pax to all from 73soulboy.Xxx.

i really like this song too! One question: why did the love have to be "stoned" what does the "stoned" referred to?
LisaLovesSummer 1 year ago
@LisaLovesSummer they were not reffering to drugs , it was a refference to the meaning of the word devotion...or hard if you will....unwavering
