Alexander is the best athlete ever, but in the tough world of greco wrestling the age will slow you down. Karelin fatigued himself in the match and even if the score would have been 0-0, he couldn't have lasted forever in the overtime. Karelin had wrestled hard day already, and the shoulder injury was just one more stone in his giant burden.

Hve to agree Karelin is the greatest Greco Wrestlers and greatest Olympic athletes of all time, not only did the guy win 3 olympic golds, and 9 world championships but was unbeaten for almost 13 years , and didn't give up a single point, in nearly 10 years, are you listening, he didn't give up single point, in international competition until the one Rulon scored, this guy is as great as Milo of Croton! And I'm American. Gardner is solid, but Karelin would have destroyed him in his prime.

When the ref put them into THE CLENCH the first one to break his grip loses. Karelin broke the grip, Gardner got the point. It stood. Karelin did not get phkd out of the Gold. He lost by the rules.

I don't know how many times I hear people say that Gardner beat Karelin; not so. Karelin lost, because of a missed throw. No way Gardner beat Karelin. Anyone could have been on the other end of that throw, and Karelin would lose.
