  • This is great! I just learned this real on the concertina and mandolin.

  • @TheCyanidePie Thanx! It's a great tune. I've been meaning to do this on the flute.... and quite a number of folks have asked for a slow version to learn from. Just got find the time. Do a vid of your concertina and mando! :-)

  • @aanvil Thanks. I'm practicing this for a fleadh so i could probably get it pretty good in a few days

  • hey can anyone give me the notes for that song, i cant find them anywhere :(

  • hey there, I really like your vid, you're a good player! you say you've only been a student of celtic music a short time, is that when you started playing whistle? do you play other instruments? regards from scotland! ;)

  • @danjulification Thanks for the kind words. Well, this video was done 4 years ago so I've improved a little since. :-) I did have a bit of musical schooling, modern flute and sax but not much more than what most folks get through high school. Simple system flutes are quite a different animal as is trad music so I basically started from scratch. Much of the musical tradition is aurally transferred so learning by ear over reading standard notes is encouraged if not expected...

  • ...and you'll spend a lot of time just listening to tunes to get them in your head well before you do much playing. Plenty of great Scot tunes out there too! Do you play and instruments? cheers!

  • Hi, first of all you play very good and hope I can too some day.. well I'm interested in learning to play the Tin Whistle but what is the difference between the Low D whistle and the regular?

  • @ferdino100 Thanx!. To answer your question the only difference is in the size and air requirements. For the most part they will finger exactly the same. The low D is pretty large and can be problematic for folks with smaller hands... but with some practice you'll most likely manage just fine. I suggest you start with the standard size D before giving the big one a go. Just learning to play is work enough without adding the weight, air and finger stretch. Have fun!

  • Hey, um, @aanvil, are you from Newfoundland?

  • @LaughingGoon Well, no.California born and raised. Newfoundland is a nice place from what I understand. Why do you ask?

  • really great! i see that i have to practise a lot till i`m able to play like you ;-)

  • Love this!

  • you look like a celebrity, and play tin whistle like a pro

  • Excellent! XD

  • amazing

  • Amazing! Realy amazing!

  • FANTASTIC

  • Tu m'as donné envie de la jouer =D Merci =D

  • Your hair is soo pretty x3

  • tio, eres dios :)

  • como se llama ese instrumento

  • Oh man, that was awesome! One question: how do you know if it's a good whistle? yours sounds nice! i've a "generation" one that doesen't sound very well...

  • @dikasad Hehe, The answer to that is a moving target. There are certainly basic playability issue with the instrument in question but the rest can be rather subjective and it also depends on your skill level. I've had whistles that I really did not like only to find that they magically improved a few yeasr later just by laying in a dark drawer. The Oak is a overall good little player. It's not very loud but it's in tune and I still like it. Gens are generally good now.

  • You might want to look up Jerry Freeman for his tweaked/improved whistles. Really top notch improvements for very little coin. Many professionals like his work. It's best to start with an instrument that is known to be a good player. That being said. Whistles are generally inexpensive so you can try a wide range of the commercial makers and just find something you like. If you like it, that is what matters really. Have fun!!! A

  • @aanvil Thanks man

  • your cute!

  • @mojiganga2 Why thank you! :-)

  • Why is it some players play the tin whistle in the corner of their mouth? Just a habit, or is there a reason?

  • @THEFINALHAZARD Well, I like to blow sideways into the windway. I feel it gives me more control. I also kinda press the mouthpiece up against my tooth for stability. Some players might be horrified by that but it works for me. So it's kinda both reason and habit.

  • Wow! Dude your amazing!!!!

  • @jesusrocks1321 Ive had a tin whistle for a few years now but never played it. Now that ive watched this i can't put it down thanks

  • @jesusrocks1321 They are very addicting once you get past the first few sqawks. :-) I look forward to your own futures vids. Keep it up! :-)

  • Great video, great sound. I picked up the tin whistle as a curiosity in the summer of 2010, but really got into it around Christmas last year. Yours is one of the first videos I've found and I've actually learned a lot just from watching. Keep it up.

  • @Machman4 Cool!!!

  • This song is in WoW, in Darkmoon faire ^^

  • prachtig

  • wooooow! that's great! I would buy that flute! how can i buy it? where? please help me! :)

  • @euPhonia95 I don't think he's using a very expensive whistle. Unless you're a professional You can pick one up for 10 american dollars or less, I've seen them for as little as $2! do a google search or try ebay. Also any music store should sell them

  • @insidethefall78 thanks! :)

  • This is one of my favorite reels, and I think you did a great job! I don't play the tin whistle myself, but it was fun to grab my guitar and play some accompaniment along with the video :)

  • love Eluveitie! ! !

  • @k3raaa YES!!! :D

  • only a year?

  • @bodhisattva99 yes, about 4 years ago. :-)

  • @aanvil well you must be an absolute master now then! :)

  • Nice Playing....

    greez from germany!!

  • @bloodytim Wow! Very kind of you.

  • when im driving to school in the bus im listening most of the time to dropkick murphys....but everytime when my mp3player plays your records im in heaven!! it really sounds great!!

    greez from germany!!

  • i like it when you play this when i seen this video i bought me a tin wistle it is easy to learn it i can play the tin wistle now very good

but so fast i cant play the song so fast

    it is a amazing video

  • @lololo727 Learn to play slow and make sure to learn all the notes you want to play... speed will come on it's own.

  • Hey! Is This a Dixon Tin Whistle?

  • @darkfluter no it is a Oak in D! :-)

  • Still interested in that flute?

  • @aanvil is this feadog D? :)

  • @dawidsoon Naw, It's a nickle plated Oak in D. American made and you can find them just about any where. I promote Jerry Freeman's tweaked whistles though if you want to be sure to get a good one you'll keep forever. Look him up. :-)

  • Beautifull You can ear our playing on Youtube : DEMAREZ

    MICHEL

  • I have a tin whistle too but, I can't play as good as you. Thumbs up if you want to here. ; J

  • Thank you so much for responding! I've only been playing the whistle for about 4 months...can you tell me what a roll is? :-)

  • @greentreestar A roll is a articulation of the fingers that uses taps and cuts to create, usually, the effect of three separate notes of of the same tone at rapid speed. da da da You clearly read music so I suggest you pick up Grey Larsen's Amazon has it. "The Essential Guide to Irish Flute and Tin Whistle" Mel Bay Publications. Great book for beginners with music background This will answer most of your questions for a few years. ;-)

  • Another question: I am looking at the version of this song in the Portland Collection of contradance tunes...and there is a squiggly line over the first whole-note 'B' of the b part. Could you give me a description of what that means?

  • @greentreestar Well, I've never seen that sheet from your source so I can't be sure. Sometime that may indicate a roll. I learned this tune by ear. There is no one "correct" way to play it. I've been taught to mix up the articulation and phrasing. Keeps it fresh.

  • I'm just curious, why do you play out of the side of your mouth?

  • @greentreestar I'm blowing sideways into the windway. It helps control the pressure but it really is dependent on certain whistles. Your mileage may vary.

  • Loved it! :D

  • i play normal flute, is this similar? i want to be able to play these cool sub versions of flutes!

  • Nice playing... and about the breath thing, I actually sort of like it. Not sure why, I guess it sort of puts a bit of imperfection (in a good folk way!) to the piece and adds character. Also I noticed you keep your right pinky finger on the whistle, you're the only other person I've seen do that haha. Good luck, keep playing!

  • I've just bougth a tin whistle, thanks for the inspiration!

  • You make playing the tin whistle cool! Thanks for being an inspiration to my tin whistle students! We're all learning together. : )

  • @aanvil Congratulations! i really appreciated the way u play it! Greets from Brazil!

@proof2580 The songs that u listen were recorded with special mic positions and equalizations (reducing about 11~13Khz) to reduce the sound of breathe. believe on me, he is a nice player ;)

  • Thats pretty awsome! I got the music have learned almost all of it. Where can I learn how to do those extra, light notes?

  • I. LOVE. THIS.

  • Great work!

  • what make of whistle is this? love the sound.

  • Ur really good, I've been playing for less than a year and I either play my tin whistle daily or every other day cuz I also like to practice my flute as well. I've tried playing that song but it's a little to hard for me at the moment... and I didn't know that the had classes for Celtic music... that sounds like it would be quite interesting

  • I love your music videos. you gotta learn about controlling your breathing.. I have no room to talk.. I can't breathe well due to weight but I hope that when I lose my weight Ill be able to breathe better and play as well as you.

    Keep playing aanvil :)

  • grande !!

  • Hey dude, nicely done there;) where did you find sheet music or anything of that sort for this tune? I really want to learn tin whistle and this is a tune that I really want to learn!

  • @Dracky1234 You should look for the tune Cooleys Reel in some modern (post 1970) Irish tune collections. Get a tinwhistle tutor. Start with something a bit easier! Also listen to Mary Bergin on utube. Best of luck!

  • loved it!!!

  • I really enjoyed this one!! Nice rhythm and tone. Next time drink a Guinness (beer or ale) or mead (booze made from honey) first for a truly authentic Celtic sound. Good luck in your musical career; you have the talent for it.

  • How do you learn it! I can't find a teacher here so I learn all by myself.

  • WOW..... you are so good at the tin whistle. 10/10 i so would watch this again.....

  • REALLY beautiful....

  • Hey I loved it :)

How long have you been playing? I just started

  • @Tallyzip

A little over 4 years ago. Hardly ever does a day go by that I do not play a bit... sometimes more than a bit. :-D Best of luck it your playing and have fun!!!

  • @aanvil Thanks!

I find it hard NOT to play everyday :)

  • @aanvil

Thanks! I find it hard NOT to play everyday :)

  • The Oak whistle is very quiet and needs to be closely miced. That's one reason the breating sounds loud. Also, he's leaving long gaps between breaths, so he has to puff a bit harder to refresh his lungs.

However, huffing and puffing can be an integral part of the music, a bit like blues harmonica. There's no harm to it.

  • I hear a lot of tin-whistle players in trad-bands and stuff, but i've never heard someone's breathing in be so pronounced... is this just a really difficult song, or just a quirk of this player?

  • @proof2580

You know I can read this right? ;-D

It's part me and part the recording itself. I did this a few years ago. My breathing placement has improved. It happens with practice. Oh, well... I'm rather soaked in listening to flute and whistle players both from recording and much live from friends. Everyone has a different style. Some have more audible breathing than others. It is what is is. Do you play? If not you should give it a try. It's so fun that its easy to be come an obsessed.

  • @aanvil

I do...buuut normally when a video has a hundred thousand odd views the person has given up reading all the comments, so i phrased it as a ' question to the group ' =P

I do play a bit of tin whistle, but since I live in Ireland, if I play any sorta trad music there's always someone within earshot who's craaazy good and will blow me out of the water =P

You're really good though, i like you're videos!

  • Great stuff...but are you as good as me???? :P

  • @Rajamuttu I play a waltons D whistle is it any good!

  • can you send me the notes of that song! :D thanks! your very good

  • great

  • What would be the difference between Oak tin whistle and Clarke original D in sound ?

I am going to buy a tin whistle but I am thinking between those two whistles.

    This sounds realy great.

  • It seems your version is different then whistlethis', but I want to learn your version!

  • Damm u inspired me to play it

  • You're amazing ! I gope I will learn to play like You.

  • sounds like Eluveitie :D

  • dude that was epic lol iv just started learning and i suck lol u got any tips?

  • Good job, Aanvil! :)

  • I've been playing the tin whistle for three years on a black whistle I have to say they're the best I have a variation of that tune I think it's sounds better but you are a good music.

    An-Mhaith ar fad!

  • i have irish heritage proud of ireland

  • In addition to all the blah blah about whistles, I just want to say how much I enjoy your playing ... because YOU are enjoying it. You're not out to wow anyone (except maybe yourself!).

It's just you and the tune ... and it shows.

  • Man, you play this piece so damn good! This is the vid that inspired me in getting my whistle! I'm not anywhere near being able to play this piece as well as you, but hopefully, if I keep on practicing, I'll get there :)

  • @polo2070 You will get there, no question.

It's just a lot of listening to others that you want to emulate and regular practice practice. A little every day.

That's really all there is to it.

Go check out Mary Bergin and Joanie Madden's whistle playing. Its a real good place to start.

I haven't been playing this particular tune in a while. It never seems to come up in session. I suppose I should start playing it out here... but I've sort of forgot it! LOL.

    Thanx for the kind words.

  • lawl....

  • hey man i just thought id say that your ability to play has inspired me to pick up the whistle and try it..and this is by far the best rendition of Cooley's ive heard on youtube. awesome job bro

  • ur very good...if you hold ur whistle straight instead of at an angle to the side of ur mouth u will get a clearer sound

  • @CittieCat4

Hi there, I'll have to respectfully disagree with you. I play at an angle for a specific reason. I'm focusing the air flow against to one side of the windway to slightly increase the back pressure. It varies from whistle to whistle as they all have different requirements. This vid was done a couple of years ago and its a method that I still employ. Thanks for the complements!

  • @CittieCat4

Air is air. A whistle doesn't care what part of your your mouth it comes from.

You can play one through your nose, if you want to. Looks gross but sounds the same.

  • now i feel like learning how to play that whistle :P thanx! :D haha!

  • @glenn55555 Cool!

Get a whistle and get playing!

It's about he cheapest "real" instrument you can get... and it fits in your pocket. :D

  • Great job dawg!

  • that was great

  • where did you buy this particular whistle?

  • sweet :)

  • "a short while"???? Awesome! ;)

  • can anyone tell me the name of thAT tin whistle pls

  • can anyone tell me the name of the tin whistle plz

  • @BERTILKAU Hi, it's an American made Oak nickle tube in D. Very common.

  • @aanvil Common, but cheap. And sounds terrible. And it will bend if you look at it funny. Definitely don't put it in your pocket.

Get a Generation or a Clarke SweeTone or a Clarke Meg, a Feadog or a Walton's Guiness.

  • @Rajamuttu I own ever single one of those whistles you just listed... and more. The Oak is solid and I like the sound. Clarke ST are generally out of tune. Especially the C... its shite. Meg is just as bad. Gens and Feadogs are good enough. If you find a good one. I like their E and Bb. What works best depends on where you play them. I play a Burke DASBT- D for my session when the pub is loud and play Oak at home.

  • @aanvil

My mistake - I was thinking of the ACORN - not the OAK. The Oak is more sturdy, and has a richer tone.

Your mistake - STs and Megs are in tune. At least all of mine are, and all the reviewers agree. I play my ST at home with ABC tunes from The Session, and it is in-tune with the ABC synthesizer.

I like my Copeland because my hand seems to prefer the taper.

  • @aanvil Our little session has just been uploaded to YouTube. I didn't even know anyone was filming (it was the father of the girl with the blue fiddle). See -- Tir na nOg Sunday Session "Ships are Sailing".

  • @aanvil Hey, I have never played but I want to get one. I want a tin silver lookin" one. What do you recomend? There is too many out there to choose from.

  • that movie is made on my birthday! sorry my english

  • Wicked tune and incredible playing. I really want to learn this one, but the tempo makes my head spin.

  • your too good for youtube

  • What tempo where you taking this at?

  • What tempo where you taking this at?

  • love it!

  • awesomeness! You the man!

  • oh ayee, i no this tune well, i have problems wif tougin playin hornpipes mostly. buh theres no doubt that ur good :D

  • em stop touging and ull be sweet :)

  • Is that so?

  • what's the type of your tin whistle ? an D or an G of an C or ..; ?

  • That one is an Oak D.

And its a few years old now. I still have it and it plays nice.

  • @FuckSystems and just for your info any session that you go to you always play a D. you can play a G or a C or what ever key it is but not in a session. :)

  • Cool, I just bought a tin whistle in D and this is the first video I ran across. Well done!

  • is it hard to learn playing this? because i consider to buy one too.

  • So easy to learn. Just practice.

  • this is cool

    I wanna get one now.

  • Your amazing..lol and cute :P

  • very well done and inspiring! I am going to make one of these type of flutes soon out of plumbing pipe.

  • I do not know if you have heard of this band or not, nevertheless, I knew I had heard this piece elsewhere when you played it. This link will take you to a video by Swiss Folk/Celtic Metal band Eluveitie. I strongly suggest you check them out.

  • i fucking love them lol

  • also bands such as waylander, cruachan, and sudikra

  • oh thanx, this guy is really good, ive just bought a tin whistle, but i dont think im playing it well, it doesnt sound like i would like it, probably im doin something wrong, do you know what could be?

also i would love to get the notes of the corrs i think their songs are really good and i'd like to play them

  • Just practice.

  • Is this Whistle in the key of D??

  • Yup, its a D :-)

  • XD he dosent breath for a long time in this LOL ROFL XD :D

  • I love it...next year I buy a wooden one.

It´ll be my first tin-whistle and I´m very curious about playing it :)

    Nice Vid :)

  • @Madi0o0bluedream if its wooden it wouldnt be a [tin] whistle would it lol

good luck on playing it btw

  • Hey

I bought a real tin whistle ... :P It sounds very nice and playing is very nice too...

Mine is out of brass. It´s a Dixontrad (high D)

  • How do you make it sound like this? :( Is my problem with my whistle? I have two, Waltons. They look like they aren't made by the same material. One is really brass, the other must be made by something softer (it's a Guinness special edition). Both sound pretty more like a recorder :T

  • @niltonbr

It all really depends on the whistle you have, each brand sounds a bit different

  • your great! now can you slow it down a hundred times so i can learn how to play it!! ive just started and im throwing myself in at the deep end :)

  • HEEEY!! It's ELUVEITIE!!!!! OMG!

  • no.. waiiit.. this is from Darkmoon Faire, in world of warcraft. IT IS!! LOL!! awesome!!

  • HAHA IT IS!!! i thought i heard it before!

  • yeah.. awesome.. reminds of the great times I had in WoW.. in darkmoon faire.. just jumping around and talking to my friends on skype.. we had lots of fun.. those old days ^^

  • I love this reel...it's so haunting and mystical...a classic, and you enhance it with your nice playing ! ^_~

  • class

  • where to get the notes to this song?
