PVDasm seems to be the program he used. A very advanced dissasembler. PE Explorer simply doesnt cut it.

My computer loads hl2 and when I load up my file its all good, but im stuck at this part. when you first start and get into that building with the cops breaking into a room and some people on the other side of the hall and you go up the stairs then some guy calls your name and tells you to come her. yeah it restarts my computer at that part everytime. simillar things happened to me. skip that part (map), firstly you must find what is the name of that map you are currently playing. press console button ` and type command map_ or map, I can`t remember

download PVDasm 1.6d Free Disassembler, run the program and open the file engine.dll (press ESC when it shows some bonus freakin` numbers). Press CTRL+R and type exactly DirectX 8.0 and then when he finds that line hit the CLOSE. Count 8th line up from this line you just found. It should be called 100B8EE6 7417. Press right click on this line and go to Code Patcher and click backup. Now instead of 7417 type 7517 (just rename 4 to 5) and hit the Patch. Click Close then No,exit the program! Enjoy.

I did exactly what you said and I STILL get that error. Also, one only problem I had. 8 up from the DirectX 8 code it didn't say 100B8EE6. It said something like, 100BE1886 but it had the 7417 at the end.. So I just changed it and it didn't work. Do you think that was the problem or no?

@XRedHackX If you have XP SP3 it should be 100B8EE6 but I`m not sure 100%, maybe at your comp it`s 100BE1886 because this guy on video has 100B18FF. The only thing that I noticed is that you have nine letters and we all have eight. Maybe you found wrong or have old directx. Get newest directx but if you already have the newest then try older, from 2008 for example. Maybe you are missing something along the way or maybe your directx is OK and you crashing is caused by another problem. Good luck!

That is the EXACT number, and I DO have Service Pack 3

The one with they DirectX 8.0 code says..

Just found out the REAL problem my number is most likely different from the rest AND hence that it doesn't work. I used this method on PORTAL. Not Half Life - Episode 2.

I thought it would work but then I forgot that I was using PORTAL! Instead of Half Life..

I am such a RETARD!

Anyways, I will see if I can try any other hex editing.

Well, I actually didn't FIX anything but it I can play it now. I just got me a ATI Radeon Graphix Card and it seem to fix all problems. Works like a CHARM!

I've tried this and, well, it's good and bad.

The amount of graphical issues makes it not so fun to play. I recently bought a used Geforce Ti 4200 for 10 dollars, including shipping.

It works great for Half Life games, I've played the first HL2 on 1280x1024 with 8x anisotropic and 4xFSAA with good framerate.

They're not bad cards for running Directx 8.

Ep2 I run 1280x1024 at 2QxFSAA and 4x Anisotropic.

It's not stunning graphics but they are much of an upgrade from the Geforce 2 I had.

I have downloaded Half-Life 2 from the Orange Box to my computer.

Once I download it I click on the desktop shortcut.

It loads and show the guy with the valve in his eye.

Then in shows a city and in the bottom right corner it says "Loading..."

When it acts like its about ready to work, it exits out of it and goes to the desktop.

Then a mini window pops up and says "Error-module failed." or something.

This is very odd! I have played this before without problems, but recently I re-installed HL2/Ep2 and am getting the DX8.0 error. It's still the same computer equipped with a 64M GeForce4-MX Integrated GPU, one of the types incompatable with any DX8.0/8.1 Pixel Shader games. Either it was pre-hacked to avoid this error, or came with a patch. I'll try to find out which.
