Hitler allowed nearly 300,000 of his best soldiers to be enveloped and captured in the North Africa campaign plus nearly 200,000 Italians. He lost a a huge amount of aircraft and tanks in this campaign he should of withdrew from Africa instead continuing to fight.

I was quite impressed by Hans Guderian, particularly his insistence on leading the panzers from the front with a large letter H painted on his tank. Crazy practice to be sure, but he earned respect as a result.

@dhouse4167 there is much debate as to wether he would have survived on the Eastern Front fighting the way he did, as it was a MUCH different war than North Africa, which was very small if compared to the enormous battles fought on the eastern front. But of course this is all a "what if." But to put your question to rest, MOST (if not all) German and Allied commanders agreed that Manstein was the best German tactician.

great generals need luck and fuel also sufficient amunition and supply... comparing rommel with other generals through the centuries i would say that he was limiited.. his star was short with or without fuel support.. its simple to understand that the territory you fight must be always open and friendly and that can not last if you face other big armies stubborn to defeat you..

Rommel's devotion was to germany, not the reich; when he saw that hitler was going to destroy germany, he tried to eliminate hitler, as a threat to his home. There's a reason why even allied generals considered him an honorable and chivalrous foe, deserving of respect even in death--he only cared for defending his homeland.

@Lachausis HE would probably had been arrested for supporting the nazis by fighting for Germany and their army and for his resitanse to the allieds. But since the allied liked him he would probably got 1-3 years prison. Kinda like Dönitz who didnt do a real war crime in the battle of the atlantic, even Admiral Dinitz said that the americans did a much more cruel uboat war versus the japanese fleet and Dönitz was following the rules and was nice in comparison.

Rommel was a great general. But he fought for the wrong side. He had no right to attack innocent peoples who did not want to fight. Hitler and his generals brought ruin and the worst shame of modern history to Germany. If there is another Reich ever again, you will bring the wrath of the world upon yourselves, and you will be crushed, bombed, shot, blown to hell, burned and killed. And deservedly so.

None of these nations were attacked preemptively by Germany. Don't insult Rommel by associating him with the rest of those Nazi cronies. Well Rommel was a devout soldier, probably the most respected general in World War 2. However, he was extremely loyal to his Fuhrer, which is commendable. The English were loyal to Churchill, the Americans Loyal to Roosevelt, And the Russians loyal to Stalin. As for tactics, Rommel was unmatched. Numbers and time are what wore him down.
