  • ATA used to fly these out of Indy (KIND) and everytime I went to Vegas, it was on one of these badboys. Direct. I loved it. It also was a favorite charter for military, and it carried me from Indy to San Diego for boot camp. Great plane, very large and smooth. But, in this business, you have to make room for the new guys and technology must continue to progress. Otherwise, we'd still be flying DC-3 Dakotas! (Not that I would mind :)

  • detesto cmte dando pitaco em operação desnecessáriamente..bando de velhos inseguros. Ainda bem que hj sou o cmte e não faço isso desnecessariamente com meus copilas....chato pra caralho isso

  • Where was this landing? Far too shaky and badly exposed!

  • Awesome vid! Very cool of you to share.

  • @ IdolHans , Realllyyy? So what do u fly by the way. And how many Lockheed acfts have u flown in your life

  • @L747 --the biggest and most unreliable of them all----the C-5! 7000 hours instructor FE. The DC / KC10 is far more reliable. But Boeing is the one that's "got it going"!

  • another unreliable Lockheed aircraft.

  • @IdolHans The L-1011 was one of the safest and most reliable airliners ever made. You must be getting confused with McDonnell Douglas and their DC-10

  • @IdolHans lockeed l1011 was more refined than dc 10, due to mcdonnel douglas rushing the dc 10 into production for the then emerging jumbo jet market. l1011 had very little serious accidents resulting from aircraft design faults.

  • great plane!this is euroatlantic airways!this aircraft is already chopped in pieces?it should be..........were are you flying now?

  • Would somebody PLEASE tell me why the L-1011 is so beautiful while the DC-10 is so incredibly ugly and utilitarian looking???

  • I loved the 1011, flew her for some 10.000 hours- absolutely the best airliner ever bulit!!!

  • TAP? -500? Loved that aeroplane.

  • nice vid. that was cool of the captain to let his junior land the plane, complete with the throttles. Bet that was an experience. Le sigh, if only I was good in math, I'd have been a pilot instead of a cop.

  • @hellcat29er What does math have to do with flying an airliner? It's not like you have to manually calculate the slope and angle of approaches and landings.

  • arnt the cockpit doors suppose to be closed

  • nice!!!!

  • The Dallas crash gave Lockheed a very undeserved black eye...The L-1011 deserved a much better legacy...RIP...

  • Well the L1011 legacy can live on as many 75's use the RB211's ^^

  • One of the all-time greatest airliners. I live in Montreal, and still miss the sound of Air Canada's L1011s taking off overhead. I had the pleasure of flying to California & back in one as a teenager, and have never forgotten how comfortable and secure this aircraft felt to fly in. A beauty, a classic, Lockheed built a true masterpiece, wish they were still in the airliner business.

  • heheh, tks for the explanation rfresh1011 , but all he was doing was smtg he could´t do it himself ....... ( they are all over the place, no matter where you go)

  • At 10 feet the captain motions to the first officer with hs hand to "hold" that attitude and just let the plane settle onto the runway, which the FO did!

  • The captain was motioning at 50 feet that the first officer needed some nose up for the fare!

  • I bet you miss it, what do you fly now

  • Wow very cool. I'm sure youre glad you were able to record it! I know I would be. Why/what was the Capt. motioning at 50 ft? Thanks for posting man.

  • The Airline History Museum at Kansas City’s Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport just aquired a Tristar in March 2010. All us airline buffs can still see a 1011!

  • i can't believe theres a black pilot of any kind.

  • @vanigga210 You wouldn't know if you only watch FOX News lol.

  • @vanigga210 Racist comment is fail.

  • @DYLAV8R no i do believe im right, i bet that pilot was foreign descent.

  • Believe it or not about two weeks ago their was a L 1011 in LAX very good taken care of but I didnt got a chance to see it in person. The loadmaster of ABX Air told me about it that he saw it. Ive been chasin this plane to see it

  • L-1011s were pretty nice, I flew on a couple of Delta ones in '96.

  • That was a greaser of a landing! Well done.

  • Any L-1011 still operating? This is a leyend in the skies most pilots I talk to say this plane was a beauty to fly. If I ever became a multi millionare I would like to buy this plane

  • @evilmontezuma87 There are very few flying, but it is still possible to see them. Prob the most common are from RAF as they still operate the great L1011. Indeed it was a beauty flying this airplane. Tks for the comment

  • @L747 Right now Im working on my private pilot license and some day fly for Mexicana Airlined even thou I live in the US I have to get a dual citizenship, If I ever get the chance to fly the L 1011 I would defenitely say "Yes" no question asked lol

  • @L747 doesn't fed ex still fly them??? I think I see them flying in o'hare and memphis all the time... could be wrong...

  • @chupaisto1 Sim

  • I love the L1011 from Lockheed. it's wide and comfortable. It's too bad Lockheed got out of the Airline business. Their Jumbo transport would be great to convert to passenger airline, it would easily outdo the Airbus A380

  • @trangenusa yes lockheed fuck airbus

  • Was that Captain coaching the copilot on the landing?

  • sounds portugess

  • Nice job! I would have having to give up flying this plane for whatever reason, unless you were going to the A380 or something like that.

  • @cjracer1000 it was for a B747-400

  • @L747 Oh! Nice plane!

  • very cool video! when was it shot?

  • @dtroit2 3 years ago in Madrid

  • Looks like a nice landing! What airport is this?

  • @lglesto Madrid, Barajas, LEMD

  • @Sarpooll well, cause it coast a lot 2 keep up and, that is my favorite plane.as matter fact king Hussein of jordan was, piloting the L1011 always god bless him!

  • Wow, I've never seen a black guy fly a plane before!

  • @drpittbull You would be surprised with the rest of the things that happen on this world and that you are probably missing....

  • @L747 Things like a black guy flying my plane? I'll pass! It's better to miss some things!

  • @drpittbull Like you allways stick your funny stupid head inside the cockpit door to see whos´s flying the airplane... hahahhahahhah and then decide wether you go or not......

  • @drpittbull well, what is wrong when black pilot flies plane ass face!

  • @drpittbull If you TRULY believe skin colour has any thing to do with flying ability, then you seriously need a reality check!

  • @drpittbull well, there so many black pilots in the U.S and,i am proud of them!

  • @solomonpilot767 just forget about this wannabe that keep flying with joysticks is last version of Flight Simulator, trying to figure out when he should trim the airplane for takeoff. It must be really hard on him to see a proud black pilot doing what he would like to. Just check this out pitbull. At the younger age of 24 I was on the big jets flying a L1011. At 27 flying a B747-400. Do you expect me to say sky is the limit??? Nooo I´ll go higher that that , looking down on your silly life

  • @L747 well,who the fuck u think ur?just a fkn human i don't care even if u fly since u were born silly fk!

  • @solomonpilot767 , well solomon the critic / comment wasn´t meant for you, it was for that pitbull prick , as an a appreciation of yor comment and you misunderstood it.

But well since you got offended with it, fuck you too. Nice flights

  • @L747 well,in that case i am sorry and, have a safe flight by the way do u remember in 1980 when, saudi L1011 caught fire in flight and, every one was dead?

  • just great !!

  • So why was this your last flight in a L-1011? Were you being trained for a different model of plane???

  • @Sarpooll I wouldn't say that the DC-10 is one of the world's best planes....

  • @pcressma a if people love em and make another version of it.,,then in my book its ONE of the world's best planes...

  • Great video! Thanks for sharing this memorable moment.

    Check out my videos!

  • @Sarpooll Fuel effeciency. Tri-jets waste more fuel, and are more costlier to maintain than a modern jet. 3 engines use more fuel than a twin jet. I love the DC10/MD11/L1011 too, sad to see them being retired. The 757 has the highest resale value than any other jet, don't see why it would be retired any time soon. The 744 is not the 747-I, so its not being retired either but made better!

  • Brad that's wrong....1011 has a wonderful safety record....

  • @dannyklove Money....

  • damn jew pilots

  • It's because thy aren't practical

  • L-1011 EuroAtlantic? Grde avião...

  • Unfortunately, they were less popular than the DC-10. Other planes are also more fuel efficient or easier to maintain. And yes, there are a rare few still flying.

  • I think the millitary still Use these birds, im pritty sure the RAF do and will do for some time hopefully, im saying that cos they still use the old boeings like the E3 and so on.

  • most pilots like this aircraft cause it is very simple

  • Wel they stil do. a bit rare to see them but if you´re lucky they still roaring the skies with that beautifull RB211 noise

  • Finally....a black pilot. I can rest happily now. :)

  • WOW thats is cool, what Airlines, it was a cool safe ahead of its time AC as far as engineer was concerned and flight dynamics.

    J

  • ATA is short for American trans Air though ATC called them AMTRAM

  • The only L-10's still flying are used for cargo and overseas, not many left.

  • Beautiful video.

  • Is their any way I can find a L 1011? Im learning to fly and my dream is to fly this plane so badly

  • pretty sure the tristars are not used any longer my freind :(

  • pretty wrong my friend. This same one is still flying. RAF still use them as tankers, etc, etc

  • wow really? I thought most of em were out of commision

  • Wow I heard that in Victorvill california they have them still operating like 10 of them I got 2 model planes of this Aircraft I love them so much even thou I wasnt born when this plane was operating Its no a plane its a monument

  • she sure is, the tristar and dc9 are definitly monuments, but I still love my seven hundred and thirty seven

  • Eh I'll take the L 1011 anytime I work for a Airline and the Executive Sale Director useto be a pilot for Mexicana he flew the DC9's

  • @finalcitrus My dads friend jsut flew on one flying back from Afghanistan - although they had to divert on the way with a problem.

  • Bring back the Tristar!!!

  • I agree, I loved flying those birds.

  • My step dad flew 1011's for Eastern Airlines. The Cadillac Escalade of Aircraft during the late 70s and early 80's.The best ever. Got a few jumpseat rides too......

  • you have the best job dude ....

  • I really like the S duct design. The falcon 900, 50, and 7X all have this design and the 7X is my favorite corporate aircraft. The L-1011 is truly an awesome airliner.

  • hahahah, brad, i challenge you to show me those records and lets compare it to other airliner

  • that sounds fun :/

  • Use to love sittingupfront for landings on thsi AC in one of the Jumpseats. ATA flew several L10s Great Aircraft.

  • whats ata wait airtran?

  • jjayi3 meant American Trans Air.

A Southwest-owned airline brand that was shut down last year due to bankruptcy. All flights that were scheduled for after American Trans Air's unexpected shutdown were transferred to the parent company (which would be Southwest Airlines, as I had previously stated.)

  • I thought ATA hade code share agreement with southwest, I mean they were just charter then went into schedule service the had agreement with several airlines etc etc but South west did not own them.

  • Southwest had been their parent company for a while (from 2000 up until 2008, I believe). The shutdown of ATA did not include aircraft or personnel.

Otherwise, you would be seeing L-1011s and DC-10-30s in Southwest's livery, kinda like how Delta is repainting all of Northwest's aircraft (including Airbus aircraft) in their own livery.

  • L-1011 - coolest airliner ever!

  • Nice video!

loboboy5113 - The L1011's were phased out due to the cost of operation. 3 engines, 3 pilots and it was a pretty complex machine that required a lot of maintenance. It was a great airplane to work on but it kept us very, very busy.

  • i think 30 are still in service

  • Why was the L1011 taken out of service? Age?

  • This aircraft is not taken out service.

It stil fly for Aero Atlantic Airways.

But this was the last landing for the pilot maybe he gonna fly on the 757

  • not the 757m mitchell, it was my last landing on the acft and company, now i´m flying a B747-400 for another airline

  • Yes. The L-1011 first flew in the early 1970s, largely entering service in 1971 and 1972. Most planes that old, save for a few DC-9s, have at the very least been stored, and most have been scrapped. The L-1011, DC-10, and most older planes of that era have been eclipsed by far more efficient and largely improved newer planes. However, the L-1011 is an amazing airliner, and surely quite underrated.

  • i guess so or bad reputation i love that plane thowe

  • I went on my honey moon on a L1011, like the L1011 my wife is no longer around but I wish the L1011 would come back. sad but true

  • @bobbj77 sorry but what happined to your wife ?

  • @ytnbfyu the wife left me, its the Tri star I miss to be honest

  • @bobbj77 am sorry.

  • @bobbj77 Find some real cheap

  • You know what everytime I see a video of this aircraft I get a sense of saftey and comfort.

  • except when the engine comes off during takeoff.

  • was that not a DC 10?

  • OMG you are right... sorry about that.. I love the L-1011.. Was lucky to fly on many as a kid, on TWA.. again sorry it was a DC 10.. now that plane had many problems, but the 1011 was damn solid.

  • hakan737 my sentiments exactly...

    L747 Thank you for posting!!

The L1011 is THE best tri-jet aircraft. The DC-10/MD11 are P.O.S. w/ a scary safety record!

  • Love it!

    Sure do miss the L-1011

  • Thanks, Anytime

  • Nice job!

I flew 747's and 727's for years for Express One International, and the WHALE for Southern Air [they furloughed me] and for Kalitta Air. I fly as a flight engineer these days. I was a Captain on Connie's fleet of 747's.Fedex called., and now I sit reserve.

  • thanks for sharing with us.I always have respect to L1011 she was very nice plane than Dc10 but I really don't know how Lockheed loose the 3 engines market against McDonnell's DC10 altough Dc10s had serious fatal accidents.

  • L1011 had major delays

  • thanks for the awesome video... one of the nicest planes ever!

  • is this the L1011 of EuroAtlantic Airways? i flew on it in summer 2006 from larnaca to montreal via lisbon... beautiful aircraft it was my second time on an L1011

  • Yeap, yes it is. And probalbly i was the FO, as i was doing those flights

  • Comment removed

  • is this LEMD?

  • Yeap, that´s Madrid,Barajas

  • AMAZING ! I wish I was born earlier so I could fly 1011's Absolutly love this plane 5/5 Nice landing !

  • Nice landing of that classic heavy. I''m sure you're enjoying that 747 and it's upgraded flight deck. Question though, was the GWPS a Boeing? I had thought the L1011 had a more feminine GWPS?

  • It is possible yes. The GPWS we had was recently new and installed due to JAR requirements. Cause before that the altitude callouts were done by the FE.Take care and thanks for the nice comment

  • where did you land at?

  • My first flight ever was on a Delta L-1011 Tri Star, flying first class to Hawaii and back. I consider myself very fortunate for having gotten to fly on one of these beautiful jets. I have no doubt that they could have flown them for many years into the future, I wish they didn't retire them, what a great aircraft. Thanks for posting this video-

  • I miss this plane so much, I fly the Boeing 757/767 now.

  • Hey-my dad used to fly the 1011 too...but for TWA. He was actually just a flight engineer on it, but he wishes to this day that he had flown as F/O or Captain. He always speaks very highly of the TriStar. What a great airplane!!

  • My dad captained the L10 for BWIA out of Trinidad. It may always be my favorite. I wish Lockheed would do commercial aircraft again someday.

  • Very nice, it looked so smooth and stable... what you flying now?

  • Thanks for the comment. Now i´m flying a B747-400

  • what airline is this?

  • nice vid...n congrats on the promotion..cnt wait to see some 747 vids!

  • The 747-400 is my favorite plane of all time. What a hottie

  • L747, thanx, nice video

  • One of my favourite planes - much better than a DC10 and nicer to fly in than a 747 - very short takeoff and so comfortable. No wonder the RAF bought loads of them when they were retired.

  • Thanks for the comment. Nice to see that so many ppl stilll miss that beautifull bird

  • The L-1011 was definitely my favourite aircraft at the time, very well built, comfortable and safe aircraft. I was very lucky to be able to fly often when I was young as my father worked for Air Canada. My first Tristar flight was from TPA to YYZ on the 100 series in 1981. I managed once to get a jump seat for landing in the 500 series into YVR, I remember the cockpit windows were huge! My last flight was from LGW to ATL in 1993 on a Delta 500 series which ironically was ex AC ! Happy days !!

  • whos last landing was thise?

  • That was my last landing, i was the First officer who did the landing

  • Great vid. Nice job landing by the FO. I really do miss the Tristars. My first flight ever was on an Air Canada L1011 from LHR to YYZ.

  • shame. The L-1011's were beautiful aircraft.

  • it is a shame i hate modern planes theres no coolness about them these old planes where a true work of art.

  • I worked for BA when I first left school and had many a flight as a passenger with a Tristar to various parts of Europe. I had my best surprise though when come back from JFK in April 1980 for what I thought was a 747 but instead it was G-BFCD, a brand new 500 variant on its first round trip. It survives still today as ZD951 with the RAF.

A quite beautiful aeroplane and far better than a DC-10 or MD-11 if you prefer!

  • I used to fly the L-1011 quite frequently on business. There will never be another aircraft that will give me the secure feeling of the L-1011....Turbulence! What turbulence?

    I miss that plane.

  • I agree with you, is a wonderful aircraft, best I ever flown. Always best for landing. It is a performance plane. too bad they stop the production. I would love for L-1011 to continue flying. I would die for it.

  • nice

  • sao portugueses!!!!

    Portuguese pilot!

  • sim

  • Perfect!

  • Smooth landing ..

    Thanks Captain

  • awesome landing!!!!!

  • the tristar was a very beautiful aircraft it give me a great impression on the aircraft and safe

  • Which airline was that? ATA?

  • Euro Atlantic Airways. :D

  • Beautiful bird indeed! Thanks for sharing such rare video footage. RIP Tristars!

  • I flew on these many times during the 80's, i dont know if its just luck but i never once had a bad flight on an L1011 (unlike other aircraft i have flown on) they were always so smooth and stable. I would be interested to hear this from someone like yourself who has been fortunate enough to pilot one, was this aircraft as good to fly as it always was for myself being a passenger? Nice landing by the way.

  • I tell you what. This is the best aircraft ever. And you´re completly right, very smoth and stable not only for the pax but for us pilots as well. I´m now flying a B747 but the L1011 is deep in my heart. Thks for the comment

  • @L747 lockheed is wrong to leave the market for the stupid airtaxi

  • I think the number one reason why the tristars went away, is because of the fuel costs.
