@mojohelmet it was part of the culture in the past. I understand what you mean, but it wasnt as satanized by society back then. Just like kids in Italy were allowed to drink wine and all in Italy, they used to show that in films too.
@karanmaxfilms - I just saw "Contempt" and I have mixed feelings about it technically and stylistically it's one of Godard's best crafted I've seen, however I felt more of a detachment to the characters than I did in "Breathless" or "Band of Outsiders" - I get what he was trying to say in regards to the sacrifices and risks artists make when they confront the obligation to please others.
@karanmaxfilms - I wouldn't call Godard "pretentious", with what he accomplished technically and stylistically, he revolutionized the way people percieved the form of filmmaking. Everyone part of the "Novelle Vague" did, but they all influenced one another. Jean-Pierre Melville, Francois Truffaut, Jean-luc Godard, Alain Resnais - they were all like brothers - who all possessed their own unique technique and form of filmmaking.
@zaodizao I retract that statement. At first I thought that the mother was a bit of a weak character but the rest of the characters were amazing. I still wish it was longer though. I'll have to watch the sequels.
what the hell was so touching about this film? maybe the dead emotional acting of the past is lost on me but nothing about the movie even remotely moved me.
Just saw the new Blu-Ray version of this. I highly recommend for everyone to experience this classic movie in Hi-Def! Definitely worth the double-dip!
Les 400 Coups, une des étincelles inaugurant de la Nouvelle Vague française, se réduit à finalement la coda de trendetting du film, peut-être le point d'interrogation le plus exclamatif dans les films........... Basically, it's good.
I know Goddard made breathless, I saw both and love 400 Blows far more. Breathless is like a French Citizen Kane and almost too pompous for me to like it. I can say one is better merely even if I liked one more than the other. Eh I've just shown both to people and people can accept 400 blows more than breathless
I always liked Truffaut. His films were always charming, entertaining and cinematically inventive. To me, he was better than Godard. Godard was a weirdo, especially his later pictures.
This was a beautiful film. The ending was really effective.

God after this and Breathless, Truffaut is so much better than Godard for French New Wave

my friend, goddard made breathless and regardless of that how can you say that one is better that the other?

People can accept new Hollywood drivel a lot more than either. Doesn't mean that it's better.

Finally, someone else who wasn't balls-to-the-walls crazy for Breathless. Nothing but jump-cuts does not a masterful movie make.

One can only hope that some future race will view this, and ponder, how such cinematic art could ever have been made, in any place or time.
