don't get me wrong I love the films but this series is lame. Plodding, predictable and not nearly as clever as everyone seems to think it is :(

@marsharent I found the world they lived in to be a very interesting and well constructed one. I'm aware that this also originated with the movies, but I felt the series did a good job exploring many of the subtleties. To me the plot, while interesting, was in a sense back seat to this aspect.

@Neichus maybe lame was harsh, i enjoyed the universe, characters, art and Solid State Society; it's not BAD bad. I've only seen a handful of SAC and the series edits, I just found them all to be riffing on the same ideas each time (thought being digitised and digital data giving rise to thought, which are two sides of the same coin anyway, + a super-hacker arc). So it feels the stories are just taking me to a conclusion I already know, at a really slow pace. It's just frustrating

@marsharent Well, after having seen the series twice I've come to the conclusion that it's a poor translation to call it "Stand Alone Complex." The idea which I believe they were trying to represent was that it was a structure without a guiding mentality; that is, the way the whole Laughing Man incident progressed was not the work of one person nor was it controlled by any individual either. This idea of self organization is currently a major topic of cutting edge scientific thought.

I can't decide which is better, Stand Alone Complex, or the movie.

The movie definitely wins visually, but SAC does a much better job of painting a picture of the GiTS world, and has a cooler character (The Laughing Man is awesome!)

Despite some minor shortcomings, Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex is truly one of the best sci-fi/mystery/action anime series out there. Not only does it present us with a convincing view of what the near future could look like, it encourages us to think about some important philosophical as well as social and political issues.

i love GITS i remember the first thing i see in this anime what really draws me in is when Major is talking of th incident where 2 homless men is only folks what sees his face and they talkd to police but sketch artist only draws the Laughing Man logo o.O woah that was being so CREEPY yet very compelling so i cant NOT watch GITS now :)

My favorite anime of all time. Sorry to all the puritans and subtitle fanatics.... the english dubs are great. It's japanese voices that annoy me... they're always too forced and tense. It just doesn't work for an american audience. Our tone of language is just so much more different. I guess it's more about cultural preference in most cases.

You'd have to be a complete waebo not to see that (waebo is japanese wannabe for those who didnt know) Hell most dubs are watchable its only a few that give it a bad name *cough* one piece *cough* and most of those are done my 4kids

But I really don't like Motoko's english voice.

i enjoy the series more than the film, but it's probably just because you get to know the characters better in the series and the animation is superior. Also, Motoko isn't just eye candy, she is a badass. The story can get too confusing at times (especially in 2nd gig) but never enough so that you can't enjoyably follow it enough.

I knew that would get your ire up and running.But seriously , this show is sadly nothing more than a collection of talking heads along with four annoying robots that look like bugs on wheels.What this show really needs, more than anything else, is a larger budget and more clear writing.The storyline can be so convoluted at times as to be a turnoff, and as appealing as Motoko may be ,she really is nothing more than eye candy.

You're not supposed to understand most of the techno-mumbo-jumbo. This show raises so many philosophical questions. What does it truly mean to be alive is a consistent one.

It's also neat how the machines are becoming human (You're annoying robots), and humans themselves are becoming more robotic like.

The name Stand Alone Complex refers to how since everyone's brains are linking together, people are able to come up with the same idea for a crime, but on their own.

@jasewildheart Compared to other series/movies it has a brilliant storyboard which covers important questions of modern philosophy and has a lot references to religion, ethics, .. Everything has a meaning, but it's not always easy to understand.

i can agree to this then others can. Im a huge fan of the 2 original movies, but the series was lacking. The first season was better then the 2nd. The 1st had a way better ending while the second season left me with an empty ending with nothing being accomplished.

Both seasons had their awesome episodes they lack the true identity has the first movie did. If they would have taken more of the original film premise instead of just re-dueing a few scenes it could have been great

That was a shitty episode. No impact on the Laughing Man arc, no deep philosphical conundrums, a disgusting antagonist and atrocious dub actors ruined this for me. THe only thing the e[isode could have offered was characterdevelopment for Batou, but even that was accomplished ,uch better by later stand alone episodes..

Despite my whining, this is an excellent series. The Complex (arc) episodes were brilliant, and I'm glad I bought the collector's set. Well worth your money, GitS:SAC.

A deaf-mute is someone who can't hear or speak. I always thought he chose the quote/logo because when he's hacking one of the victims, they have no control over their senses and become "deaf-mutes".

It's revealed in the series that he considers himself a "deaf-mute" because he has information that he is hiding from the public, and eventually decides to stop pretending to be a deaf-mute =D
