On the other hand, I'm an atheist and I can't think of anything that could persuade me to start believing in Yahweh. How would I react if Yahweh magically appeared in front of me and said "I'm real."? I wish I could say I'm open-minded and I'd be willing to change my mind when faced with evidence, but honestly I'd be more likely to assume that I was hallucinating from mushrooms or something. Evidence still wouldn't explain away the contradictions. I hope that doesn't make me irrational.
@sbunny8 Well, if that did happen, you would need no reason to believe. You would know. That said, because it is real, we would need to work harder against it. Murder, at least in the US (not sure about International Law), doesn't have a statute of limitation.
That was awesome! LOL Love the new robot. I think that is why they use circular logic in religion. They have had lots of practice defending it, many millenias even.
Well, did you ever see The Matrix? What happens when you ignore the possibility of being wrong is you live in a false, but always comforting world. Cypher is right, ignorance is bliss. The problem is we'd all be dead if everybody ignored reality.
'impossible' means a 0% chance, 'certain' means a 100% chance, 'possible' means greater than a 0% chance, 'more likely than not' means greater than a 50% chance, 'probable' is subjective: greater than a 75% chance? 90%? 95%? 99%? 99 44/100% {like the purity of Ivory Soap q-3 }?
P1 - Does even the POTENTIAL exist? "Maximally" seems to fall into the same category as "ideal", which only exists for theoretical model building/designing, such as schematics, but not in reality. The first premise is doubly flawed.
P1 <here you're right but its attempting to show if its possible then he exists ,
P2-6 are not wrong , (i hate to argue from authority but) infact there very widley accepted amoung Philosophers, it uses model logic to show if P1 is true then th C follows, whether you like or not that doesn't matter
@lxAgnosticxl If you're arguing from authority, then you've lost; logical fallacy, kiddo.
P1 ISN'T true, and you cannot use logic alone to prove existence; to prove existence, you HAVE to provide objective, empirical evidence or you're just playing Make-Believe. Period.
I not saying it proves god it doesn't . But its shows if you accept P1 then the C follows. P1 could be false but what it does is show if god is possible he exists, god could be logicaly immposible for all this argument cares.
Besides if you say P1 ISN'T true <in capitals doesn't that make you a Gnostic atheist?
@lxAgnosticxl No, it doesn't do anything of the kind. Maybe you and I disagree on what the word "possible" means in this context, but the fact is that just because something MIGHT be so, that means it also might NOT be so.
Furthermore, you didn't even address my objection to P2.
And lastly, without evidence, all you're doing is mental masturbation. I can logically prove ANYTHING, provided I never have to show empirical, objective evidence of it.
I didn't realize until now that you are a totally and completely normal and sane and sensible person; I used to think you were a bit eccentric, but you are the very epitome of the good, old-fashioned all-american girl. Keep shooting straight, K8, everybody is looking up to you and counting on you. I wish there were more women like you.
"If you're not open to the possibility of being wrong, what happens if you are wrong?" It wouldn't matter to them, because there's no consciousness after death. We're all created equal, living unequal, and dead equal.
You should make a big planetary destruction animation. Oh look it's planet Earth! I'm a big scary asteroid and I've come to destroy your planet. OH NO! BRASH!!!!!!!!!!! Destruction!
Shouldn't be the Atheists responsibility to prove God doesn't exist, rather theist that he does. Same goes with UFOs, ghosts, etc. Until then we just after assume they probably don't exist, but they just might.
@BionicDance (and to all) I think I've seen the answer to this. A fellow YT named Evid3nc3 ( i think you know him) has his deconversion story up. If you missed his video named "2.0 Deconversion: The god concept" (/watch?v=12rP8ybp13s) please check it out.
His idea of a mega-belief points out the issue here... i'm not sure how many of us, that want to help our "faith-based friends" have the energy to counter an entire "mega-belief"
You say that Rational Station is back but the last time you uploaded a Rational Station video was over 200 videos ago, I doubt that most of your subscribers even know what it is.
Boomerang eyes are the thinking face. Cute. Of course, answers won't descend from that direction. As for your question, I once blogged that, if the Universe were filled with an omnipotent being, that'd leave no room for anything else. G:d needed to care for something. In order to have something to care about, G:d needed to give up some power. G:d cannot reclaim any of that power without removing something G:d cares about. Created things become partners in, not merely products of, Creation.
I suppose that if you could get a g:dbeliever to acknowledge that their g:d works through people, that would be a step in the right direction. If she want to pray for someone's healthy recovery, pray for the skills of the surgeon, the nurses, the medicine chemists, the equipment engineers, whomever.
@Gemeni3insane Exactly! If you want to eliminate most of the problems that religion cause, then you keep it as far away from politics and science as possible. Although personally, I think people will still find excuses to oppress people, stagnate science, etc.
@Justinfh2point0 That's way I said " No point yelling at a rock to bend on its side" these people are on a different plane of existence. The only way to fight a fire is fire, to avoid the them is to become water. And of course people will find excuses, that's one of our greatest advantageousness annoying.
Judging from recent discussions, I'd imagine many of them would say that they DON'T need to consider the possibility that they're wrong, because, you know... they're right.
I think it's a function of them borrowing god's supposed infallibility. I've actually had someone argue that since god is all-knowing, she has absolute certainty that he exists.
I think it's like a substance addiction...the theist themself has to want to be deconverted before their beliefs can be questioned. For me it was the gay rights thing whittling away at it and then going to a charismatic church where I met people that were obsessed with demon possession.
The more who follow religion, the excepted it becomes. One person believing in a man in the sky means that person is insane. Millions who believe the same thing is religion.
I agree. I'm an occultist, so I see this type of stuff all the time. Many "spiritual" paradigms have a lot of similar elements to them, but somehow the more popular ones are seen as legitimate while the unpopular ones are called bogus.
The only real difference between a religion and a cult is the number of people who believe in it. Functionally, they are the exact same thing.
Stefbot talked about the issue of "logic" in one of his videos, although he was talking about general thinking rather than specifically religious thinking. His conclusion is that people rarely use logic to actually form conclusions. People just claim to be logical, when in reality people react emotionally first and THEN they try to use logic to justify their thinking or behavior. This is why a logical argument won't convince people: logic is only an excuse to justify what they already think.
Awesome animation! The sad fact about humans is we are not as logical as we might think. Because of brain development at a young age, and the constant reinforcement of many others who believe the same thing it gives the theist all the belief they need to keep believing. If millions are doing it so thinks the theist, it has to be right.
@Avileader2 but we have smart phones!!! When I was a kid ... face talking comm thingies were only for like, secret agents or people in space movies. you can speak to your mate face to face in the palm of your hand! That's rediculaous!!! It's like something off of James Bond... or Star Trek....
You could do a secret agent role next time you do face-time to make it less boring?
Yeah I've used an argument that theists can't counter, but they still don't accept that their deity doesn't exist.
By demonstrating that their personal deity doesn't exist, they retreat into the "but there might be something!" God Nebula defence, which they then use to support a dance back into "... and therefore my personal deity might be true!" even though you've already demonstrated that no, it couldn't be.
The only way theists lose their faith is through coming to that point themselves.
What a pleasant suprise, and I just saw the JPP interview, I was wondering if Rational Station would ever return. I had almost forgotten that music, that's how long it's been.

Great faces for Dewey q-3 . You spoke of subjective/objective morality. Now, you speak of subjective/objective reality. Person A makes conclusions about item B based on the subjective reality of Person A. Person C makes conclusions about item B based on the subjective reality of Person C. Where their subjective realities coincide are facets of the objective reality of item B.
