Aww.. She loves you, but she has 1 million years of evolution in her telling her to keep things away from her roost. don't consider it a loss of bond.
@Avatinfernus Lmao, yeah I had a dutch blue peach-faced lovebird and she used to gnaw the hell out of my hand and draw blood =p It's funny how they call them lovebirds when some of them aren't so "lovey"
My lovebird has the SAME behavior like yours and this is disturbing me a lot because she just doesn't do this to only to cameras but to any hand which come in front of her when she is in her cap, box, quilt and even on shoulders!! she bites really hard! previously, i had a male lovebird and he wasn't biting like this one!
has she stopped this behavior? i just pray that mine stops to bite soon :(
@Elyythebird I wish I could say yes, but it seems that as Cleo grows older, she's becoming a LOT more territorial and nippy with me. If she's in her cage, it's near impossible to remove her anymore. She's kind of forfeited her trust in me, and I can't figure out why. She's still quite a gas to watch though, and is a happy fun bird, we just will likely never have the bond we had during her first year of life.
@lostinvast thanks for the reply! this means that she will bite harder when she grows - mine is only 6 month old! this is very discouraging you know! :( i guess i should start to look for a male one to buy soon..
@lostinvast Hello, I just love Cleo my lovebirds go nuts listening to her. They just can't figure out where Cleo is..LOL!.btw..did you say you take Cleo out of the cage? The reason I am asking because I open the cage door and they come out on their own. I was doing that at first removing them and it seemed to be stressing them so when I let them come out on own they are happier. Believe me it won't take but a few minutes when Cleo sees that door open to come out.
Talk with some breeders and other owners. Lovebirds, especially females, go through hormonal changes throughout the year where they can get a little crazy, but eventually, the hormones settle back down...until the next time.
Having access to boxes and such can trigger the hormones as well, as they can go into "nest" mode, so don't keep any boxes in the cage, and limit anything that can be construed as a box / nest in the cage.
@lostinvast My female lovebird does the same thing, and the woman who had raised/handfed her said it's normal for female lovebirds. Evidently they have to fight over nesting grounds in the wild (they nest in tree cavities, so limited numbers), so they're super-territorial. Mine is like a cannonball when she comes out of her nest, LOL! She started biting at six months, but she bites less as she gets older (she's 9 now).
@lostinvast well by the time my rainbow lorikeet became 8 years old, he wouldnt let me touch him at all :( i dont know why, he was always let out of his cage and cared for. he died sadly.. i miss him so much T.T im not sure if they share the same personality as a lovebird though :L
@lostinvast Our Buddy is just like Cleo. She was very lovey the first year, now she does not like us putting our hands in her cage. Much unlike Rocky her mate, he loves preening my hand and climbing all over me. Buddy is still fine once we get her out though. I hope your Cle-Cle gets better for you. She is such a hoot to watch :D
