I completely agree with the 5 year thing and learning it at school. I have NO natives where I live (pennsylvania) for Spanish, I barely ever get to speak it. I can read almost anything, and speak pretty well, but when it comes to understanding spoken language aside from interviews and news, I have a lot of trouble.

hi Moses...umm i just wanted to say that umm english is not my first language but i have been studying it from kindergarten and but i was like on beginning level umm 2 yrs ago just because of that grammer thing i hate grammer ..even if you will ask about my native language i cant explain the grammer now i have left worrying abt english grammer and i just listen and read english and now i CAN speak english actually ..grammer should not be a part of language classes
I learned Japanese on my own following AJATT, after that I lived in Japan. AJATT has been the most essential part of my learning, it makes a difference.
Got to know Steve Kaufmann from AJATT. Then I got to know you -Moses- from Steve's reply video to "how I got open minded" and I'm happy to finally hear from all three in the same video.
The average cost per credit at the universities in my area is about $800. A three credit language course will run you about $2,400.00. For that kind of money, you can buy yourself the best resources for self-study and have money left over for a trip!
That's right around the same price as Ohio State's. With 2400 bucks, you could buy some of the best resources for that particular language AND possibly extra money left over for a ticket to that country!
When I took language classes in school the teachers always seemed like they made it an academic thing and something you simply need to memorize the entire language and that if we don't do the homework we won't learn. I probably learned more from having fun on going it on my own that I did in classes and I felt like I progressed more on my own too!
Laoshu, you have no idea just how right you are. Last year I dropped my Spanish lessons at school and decided to take up learning by myself. I spent five hours everyday for five months and achieved the solid level I was looking for. A year passed and I eventually decided to check up on my old friends in Spanish class (now in year 2). THEY KNEW NOTHING! Of course, they had managed the very basics like present tense and present progressive, and a couple of tourist phrases, but otherwise- nada.
about a year ago you and Khatzumoto both opened my mind to 'alternative' (non-class room) ways to learn. for some reason i had a very difficult time grasping the idea you don't need a class room, but now it seems that independent study is the best way.
I've heard people say the same thing about Chinese; that it will take 7 years to MASTER Chinese and I agree with them. I realize to become conversational it'll take the average person one year. 4 years is the time most people say to it'll take to gain fluency in Chinese and master reading and writing characters. Give it 7 years and you will be speaking like a native, have the ability to write and read over 5,000 characters. In 1 year and no one will master a language, even with full immersion.
Even in 10 years one wouldn't master a language. There's really no such thing as mastering a language. There are mastery aspects, but one can't fully master a language- not even their native language.
I know a lot of people that want to learn Japanese. But they all stubbornly insist on taking classes. It's horrendous. Now that I'm learning Mandarin as well people are approaching me saying they're gonna study Mandarin as well, but will take classes. They refuse to believe me when I say it's not even necessary and just doing it on your own goes much faster. When I give my example of my progress with Japanese, they attribute it to my "superior intelligence". Like, say what?!
That's what the teachers would say about people like you in front of other students- ''You are very tallented'' like, only certain people can actually learn a language in this way. ''If you don't have such talent, you can't learn the language by yourself''
I'm not even remotely talented at language learning. I always got 3s and 4s on my French and German in high school (Dutch scoring system goes from 1 to 10, 1 being lowest). That even got me thinking I sucked at language learning, so that's why at first I had my reservations when I started learning Japanese. And that's when I got to Khatzumoto's website....... :-)
Khatzumoto uses the same input/natural method but his focus really paid-off and makes a mockery of the academic approach.
The 7 years claim is clearly nonsense, however it's useful if it makes people realise that a language takes some real commitment.
What is a realistic estimate of time? I think it depends how badly the student wants to learn, how hungry they are and how much time and attention they can bring to the task.
As long as the process is fun does the time really matter?
She'd probably just refuse to believe that you, or Khatzumoto or Steve K could learn it so much more quickly.
She just means that the method is so bad that it takes the poor fee-paying students 7 years. After a couple of years they can manage これはペンです。 It's a crying shame. It's no wonder Steve K spends to much time trying to open people's eyes - only to have it misconstrued as just trying to sell LingQ.
Yea, it's like people look at Steve Kaufman like he's some sort of conspiracy nut or something. People just refuse to believe the truth. It may take years, ut people will wake up sooner or later.
Another funny story though. One of my other co-workers, who is Japanese, he has lived all over the world and taught Japanese in Australia, France, Canada, Germany, England, etc. He speaks English perfectly, and can teach in German and French. I told him about the method I used and he just scoffed it off. He said people NEED grammar instruction or they'll never learn. Did he learn all his languages that way? To each their own I guess but it seems like more trouble than it's worth.
Grammar instruction in the beginning won't do anything for you but cause confusion. If people want to follow that way of learning though, I guess it's ok as long as they're having fun with it.
My only regret is that I didn't do it my own way sooner! I wish I would have applied this method BEFORE I went to Japan. One of my ex-coworkers there had lived in Japan for 5 years and couldnt speak any Japanese...NONE! I was there for about a year and a half just using my own method (well before I stumbled upon any sites) and I could at least understand and hold small dialogues in the language at that point. Granted I slacked too much but time fixes all I suppose.
I see a tutor once a week. I'll bring in a textbook, complete the exercises and quizes, and get corrected. Im having sooo much fun learning japanese. Reading and writing japanese at a glance looks very scientific, but it strucked me how fun it is. And im learning at my own pace. no pressure ukno! :)
Thanks for another quality video. I just want to put in my 2 cents on the issue of "how long" it takes to learn a language.
I think talking about how long it takes is mostly a waste of time. For a lot of beginners I think it can be discouraging when people make statements like "it should only take you x years" or "it's going to take you at least x years".
For instance, I live in Japan and have studied for just over a year now. Contrary to what a lot of people say I've met plenty of foreigners that speak Japanese well and many conversationally fluent. However, a lot of these people have very basic vocabularies and grammars. I'd say the majority of them are illiterate. I think this needs to be considered as well.
I agree with you that everyone has different goals. For me that's part of what makes learning fun. I'm not a linguist but it seems like quantifying language knowledge and fluency is difficult and even impossible.
Sorry, I'm not sure where I'm going with this comment :) It really bothers me too when people are critical of things like accents and I see a parallel to things like length of time studied. It's not a contest after all.
Just to let you know, I mean no harm to anyone who has studied any language in any country. This video is mainly for encouraging those who don't have any hope or don't believe that it's possible to learn a language independently without taking any formal classes or going to the country. I just thought I would let you know that.
Absolutely. I hope I didn't come off the wrong way. I just wanted to reinforce what you said: that Japanese is a learnable language.
With regard to people that think you need to be in the country to learn, this is not true at all. In fact, I'd say that until you get up to at least a low-intermediate level it can be very distracting. Most of the learning I've done is on my own. It is nice to have the "battlefield" right outside my door though!
Yes, I wouldn't even step foot into the country to live unless I have made it up to at least an intermediate level in the language. I think once this level is reached before going, things will be learned quickly due to the foundation that was built.
I feel the same way towards university/high school language courses. I took language courses in high school and hated the language I was learning all day up UNTIL I got home, and could do it how I wanted. Then it was fun again. I was in a French class in high school once, my teacher asked us in french what a possible cause was for terrorist groups. So I went off in french using all the words i could to describe my views, and she replies "no, lets stick to whats in the book". So destructive...
Same thing also happened with me in a language course. Actually , it was in a Hebrew class I took. I was doin a little bit of roadrunnin in the class and the teacher was like ''Not right now'' my poor heart was broken.
@ridthedelusional Yep , definitely agree with you. It is so common for people who are full of doubt that they tend to see everyone as treat to their so-called method. Secondly , they must be sure that you are willing to pay enough money and therefore willing to learn like a slow slug.

you agree with khatzumoto and stephen krashen on why its important to have fun while learning a language. thats ONE sentence.
why does it take you about 4 minutes to convey this information?
seriously , learn how to gather your thoughts before making a video.
