I love Richie. I've been to 2 Bon Jovi shows in last couple years and he's one of my favourite guitarists. But I have to say that this is terrible, showboating nonsense. I suppose anyone can have an off day, thankfully he doesn't engage in this kind of ear bashing anymore

You gotta remember that he did this when he was still new to fame and was more just trying to put on a show then show his musicianship. If you want to hear how distinct his musical style is listen to his solo albums and his great blues playing and his amazing accoustic work.
He is nothing in comparison to some of the top dogs out there. He is class, but NOTHING in comparison to Slash, Hendrix, Page, Van Halen etc etc I could name 200 more

Sambora was not himself in this era, I think he got caught up in the 'EVH' thing, he really came out for his solo album and showed he was ligit, but having said that his ongoing work sucked big time, and Bon Jovi slowly took that 'pop' money making road and completely fucked their legacy etc. Jon is just a corporate mind, with musical ability, nothing else. But having said all that, they are the smartest band (business wise) as they are still one of the biggest grossing bands.
I agree with an early comment, this isn't classic Sambora, but i gotta clear somethin up. Can people please stop making out that sweep picking is the holy grail of guitar playing. Anyone who actually plays guitar should realise it's just as gimmicky as whammy bar diving if it's done to the extreme. Also, it really isn't that difficult. I wish people would take a minute and realise, Sambora is limited to his playing style in as much as Bon Jovi are a commercial rock band, not a vehicle for shred.
And by the way from my point of view the skills of a guitarist are to measure regarding to the emotions that with his music he transmit to his audience.. And as every person has his own "musical tastes", everyone will feel different emotions listening to the music of a particular guitarist rather than another..
Showing off their ability in playing the guitar doing extremely long solos which sometimes can appear just like technical exercises isn't making music from my point of view.. For example the solo made by Richie Sambora in Dry County is for me one of the greatest solos ever cos it has his own role in the song, and it's not made just to show off Richie's ability, even if it's very fast.. Otherwise should every guitarist perform the Flight of the Bumblebee to prove to the audience his ability?
Put a thumbs down all you want, if you people actually played guitar, you'd realise this is easy to play. Guitar gods are people like Vai, Satriani etc.
Playing the guitar is not just showing off like Vai, Satriani and Gilbert... Most of the people gets bored if a guitarist just show that he's able to play extremely difficult licks.. Do you think that a guitarist like Richie Sambora would not be able to play such things? The thing is that if he would have performed a long shred guitar session most of the people would not have enjoyed it..
This is the easy way of playing fast. There's no sweep picking, string skipping etc. It's just tremolo picking on one string, which is so easy even I can do it. A bit of pick scraping too. Paul Gilbert on the other hand is a master of the instrument, and one of the most versatile guitarists on the planet, who privately is not a fan of Kirk Hammett either!
Well, ok you've got your ideas, I've got mine, this is obvious. I agree with you that Gilbert is a master of the instrument, what I was trying to explain is that from my point of view is wrong to measeure the skill of a guitarist just in relation to the speed of his licks, because there are many guitarists who can easily shred (look for example also to Phil Collen of Def Leppard) who prefer to make hard rock songs with a lead vocalist instead of soloing all the time by themselves..
yeah but those guys have put alot of time into the certain technical abilities they have, Sambora would be too old to start now he wouldnt be able to. Clapton as good as he is knows he cant play any Eric Johnson, give it a rest
I'm sure they had, and I admire them for this, even if I don't like their music, but why do you all think that a guitarist is not able to shred if he don't do it in his songs? Then Phil Collen of Def Leppard, John Norum of Europe, Ace Frehley of Kiss are not real guitarists? More or less they play, surely with their own qualities, the same of music made by Sambora.
It's why guitarists have solo spots on stage. Phil Collen can shred, Ace Frehley can play well to a certain extent, but he shows his limits when playing.
Yeah they've their solo during the gig, but let's consider this: if a Gilbert fan goes to one of his concerts and he doesn't shred how will the fan react? Bon Jovi, Kiss, Def Leppard and Europe's music is different form Gilbert's, then if the guitarist in his solo doesn't shred and plays a beutiful but slow solo their fans will not disagree, while if Gilbert plays a beautiful but slow solo his fans would surely not appreciate this.

They would appreciate it. One of Malmsteen's most famous pieces is Black Star, and most of the song is built around the same melody. People expect versatility at a show. Sambora isn't that, it's just the same old pick scraping and whammy bar trick
I think Sambora is a verstile player, he has composed so many songs in different styles, such as rock, blues, pop, country, funky-rock, and I like them all.. Clearly you don't appreciate his works, well that's not aproblem, everyone has his opinion and his musical tastes.
I play guitar. I KNOW this is actually fairly easy to play. And? He improvved it, which is a lot harder than it sounds, when you are in front of tens of thousands of people, your fingers are sore from playing a bunch of other songs, and you're running around. What makes Sambora a god of the guitar for me is the fact that he can improv incredibly well.

It if it's improvised it's even poorer. He repeats the same licks again and again. But it ain't improvised, because I've seen him do this solo on other videos.
People seem to have a heightened view of Sambora's guitar skills. He's an average guitarist. I don't understand how people can call him the best ever when Steve Vai, Satriani, Gilbert, Bettencourt etc could outplay with their hands behind their backs. And don't give me this nonsense on feel. All four of those players I've just mentioned are phenomenal players who play with a great deal of emotion

BonJovi is pop culture but do people also realize the whole band has got talent! at least in there type of music. Christ sambora on the guitar just insane.. David Bryan one of the best keyboardists i have ever scene. Good old Tico awesome drummer and of course the voice. If you dont like there music awesome but quality players yes....

Bon Jovi is not pop!and i noticed that a couple of his Grammy nominations over the years were in the pop category!!and why do people always talk bad about them and i heard so many times said "i'm not really a fan"...but have they done something wrong in their careers for people to think that?there are so many Bon JOvi rumours i don't understand anything anymore...and btw of the 80s ROCK bands, they are pretty much the only ones that still have no.1 albums!

Sambora was not himself in this era, I think he got caught up in the 'EVH' thing, he really came out for his solo album and showed he was ligit, but having said that his ongoing work sucked big time, and Bon Jovi slowly took that 'pop' money making road and completely fucked their legacy etc. Jon is just a corporate mind, with musical ability, nothing else. But having said all that, they are the smartest band (business wise) as they are still one of the biggest grossing bands.

I agree with an early comment, this isn't classic Sambora, but i gotta clear somethin up. Can people please stop making out that sweep picking is the holy grail of guitar playing. Anyone who actually plays guitar should realise it's just as gimmicky as whammy bar diving if it's done to the extreme. Also, it really isn't that difficult. I wish people would take a minute and realise, Sambora is limited to his playing style in as much as Bon Jovi are a commercial rock band, not a vehicle for shred.

And by the way from my point of view the skills of a guitarist are to measure regarding to the emotions that with his music he transmit to his audience.. And as every person has his own "musical tastes", everyone will feel different emotions listening to the music of a particular guitarist rather than another..

Showing off their ability in playing the guitar doing extremely long solos which sometimes can appear just like technical exercises isn't making music from my point of view.. For example the solo made by Richie Sambora in Dry County is for me one of the greatest solos ever cos it has his own role in the song, and it's not made just to show off Richie's ability, even if it's very fast.. Otherwise should every guitarist perform the Flight of the Bumblebee to prove to the audience his ability?

Playing the guitar is not just showing off like Vai, Satriani and Gilbert... Most of the people gets bored if a guitarist just show that he's able to play extremely difficult licks.. Do you think that a guitarist like Richie Sambora would not be able to play such things? The thing is that if he would have performed a long shred guitar session most of the people would not have enjoyed it..

This is the easy way of playing fast. There's no sweep picking, string skipping etc. It's just tremolo picking on one string, which is so easy even I can do it. A bit of pick scraping too. Paul Gilbert on the other hand is a master of the instrument, and one of the most versatile guitarists on the planet, who privately is not a fan of Kirk Hammett either!

Well, ok you've got your ideas, I've got mine, this is obvious. I agree with you that Gilbert is a master of the instrument, what I was trying to explain is that from my point of view is wrong to measeure the skill of a guitarist just in relation to the speed of his licks, because there are many guitarists who can easily shred (look for example also to Phil Collen of Def Leppard) who prefer to make hard rock songs with a lead vocalist instead of soloing all the time by themselves..

I'm sure they had, and I admire them for this, even if I don't like their music, but why do you all think that a guitarist is not able to shred if he don't do it in his songs? Then Phil Collen of Def Leppard, John Norum of Europe, Ace Frehley of Kiss are not real guitarists? More or less they play, surely with their own qualities, the same of music made by Sambora.

It's why guitarists have solo spots on stage. Phil Collen can shred, Ace Frehley can play well to a certain extent, but he shows his limits when playing.

Yeah they've their solo during the gig, but let's consider this: if a Gilbert fan goes to one of his concerts and he doesn't shred how will the fan react? Bon Jovi, Kiss, Def Leppard and Europe's music is different form Gilbert's, then if the guitarist in his solo doesn't shred and plays a beutiful but slow solo their fans will not disagree, while if Gilbert plays a beautiful but slow solo his fans would surely not appreciate this.

They would appreciate it. One of Malmsteen's most famous pieces is Black Star, and most of the song is built around the same melody. People expect versatility at a show. Sambora isn't that, it's just the same old pick scraping and whammy bar trick

I think Sambora is a verstile player, he has composed so many songs in different styles, such as rock, blues, pop, country, funky-rock, and I like them all.. Clearly you don't appreciate his works, well that's not aproblem, everyone has his opinion and his musical tastes.

I play guitar. I KNOW this is actually fairly easy to play. And? He improvved it, which is a lot harder than it sounds, when you are in front of tens of thousands of people, your fingers are sore from playing a bunch of other songs, and you're running around. What makes Sambora a god of the guitar for me is the fact that he can improv incredibly well.

It if it's improvised it's even poorer. He repeats the same licks again and again. But it ain't improvised, because I've seen him do this solo on other videos.

People seem to have a heightened view of Sambora's guitar skills. He's an average guitarist. I don't understand how people can call him the best ever when Steve Vai, Satriani, Gilbert, Bettencourt etc could outplay with their hands behind their backs. And don't give me this nonsense on feel. All four of those players I've just mentioned are phenomenal players who play with a great deal of emotion
