The income limit for payroll taxes is $110,000 this year, so if Newt claimed more income than that, then he would have paid the maximum payroll tax. A more typical situation for an S Corp owner would be to claim less than $110,000 in salary and take the rest as profits.

My wife is about to get a masters in taxation. According to what she believes, he is allowed to get dividends after making a "reasonable" salary. His salary has to be relative to industry standards that other companies make. The rest is allowed to be a dividend. Sorry Cenk, he's slimy, but not a crook THIS time.

You're telling me you pay 28%? And BTW, city taxes don't get paid to the IRS. Sorry, can't trust you've done the math

I don't know...diagnosed sociopaths have a broken part of their brain that is associated with empathy, and I think that fits what Newt Gingrich does to a T....he is a person that lacks total empathy for people and behaves in a self-interested, even destructive manner towards other people. He is willing to break not only social contracts but personal contracts between people.

@calimar28 Actually, you would only need about a 5% flat tax. NO exclusions, dependents, loopholes, etc., etc., ad nauseum. I would almost venture that it could be cut to about 3 1/2 or 4 % after 5 years. If you're making $10/hr, you're not paying 1/3 in taxes. Your tax system is based on marginal tax rates, so even in the case where you might reach a higher tax bracket, your effective rate wouldn't be 33%. And the notion that all rich people are born into wealth is also an illusion. Unfortunately, you won't want to hear any of this becasue you obviously have bought into this narrative that wealth is bad.

Then using his wage of <$10/hr, he tries to convince people he's paying 1/3 of his income to the IRS, which is impossible. You should also notice that I never said the tax sytem is fair. In fact, I do support a more progressive tax system. But this person doesn't do himself any favours by making things up or making mere ideological trite slogans. Let's say you make $10/hr (you said you make less), and work 50 hours a week. That's a gross income of $26000. That would put you into the 15% fed tax bracket. Your federal tax at most would be $3482, which is an effective fed tax rate of 13.4% If you were married, or had other deductions or exemptions, this rate would be less. Ok, add in state tax. You're telling me you pay 28%? And BTW, city taxes don't get paid to the IRS. Sorry, can't trust you've done the math
