dude, you have some of the greatest vids on DIY stuff on the G35, please dont stop producing great vids. may be a slightly better definition on the camera to be able to see things a bit clearer, but other than that, great vids man !! i'll keep watching !
Thanks for the video, made my life much easier!! I just installed my new OEM air filter today, and swapped in a Stillen Z-tube since I had everything apart already. :)
ok well, on a small side note, those clips that hold the grill and the filter tubing and also the battery cover, what is the part number of those clips? or at least its actuall name? i lost about half of them (dog ate them) and i need to buy some so it dosent loosen, THANKS!!
There is no way you can simply release the airbox clips and swap out the filter on the G35. You have to do as this video shows. I don't care how you did it on your Maxima, Z or any other car for that matter.
I doubt anyone needs to go through all this trouble. There are 2 clips you simply pull and the filter will slide out. Then do the opposite and the new one is in. Maybe it's harder on this G but on my 2000 Maxima with the VQ30 engine it takes all but 15 seconds to do.
i need to do this but i dont feel like taking the whole box out.i could just shimmy the box open and stick my hands in there and take it out but again like jacomoncal said it could damage the new air filter.and yes the intake system on the g35 is good enough that putting a CAI system would not give much hp.Im just gonna get a replacement K&N for my sedan.
It used to be that you could change the air filter in most cars by turning a single wing-nut counter-clockwise, reaching into the air box and picking up the old filter then placing the new filter in it's place, then re-tightening the single wing-nut. Now these cars are being designed by wing-nuts!
it depends on the type of k & n filter. If it's just a drop in filter then yeah. I would stick w/ the open and replace every 1yr or 15k miles for optimal filtration.
its not necesary to remove the entire air box jus to change the filter...unless you want to clean that also...the clips that you used to seperate the air box, if you undo those while its still in the car and pull up the airfilter will jus slide out...see not nearly as complicated:)
If you try to do it the way you are suggesting, you will find that the old filter is very difficult to remove and the new one may become damaged in the process of installation. The airbox does not move as one would think, it has several mounting feet on the bottom that prevent it from being moved.
but if the engine is the same as a nissan 350z(which i hear they are) then it shoudnt be a problem cause that what i do in my 350z and it works perfectly
Those plastic locking push pins things that you took off in the begining, do you know were I can get some more cause a few of mine have dried out and broken.
I believe on the G35 the factory air intake system is very well engineered and replacing with an aftermarket intake system will not yeild significant gains. Also, those aftermarket cone filters have been proven to let through more dirt.
Most intake systems use an oiled cotton gauze filter media, which lets through a significant amount of contaminants. As long as the OEM air filter is changed frequently enough, the performance gains (on the G35 at least) are insignificant with an aftermarket intake. If you want to read more about different types of air filters check bobistheoilguy
Thanks for the vid!

would u install a k&n air filter just the way u showed here for the stock filter? or does it not work like that?

What did you cut early on in the video?
Was it a string or something?
And did you tie a new string at the end?
Sorry for being ignorant, I'm still learning.
vulcanrush 3 years ago
Yes, I cut a small plastic zip tie that is holding an electric cable that attaches to the MAF.
