@dexterholland916 Rude was a WCW heavyweight champion. Technically the "WCW International Championship" but it's generally regarded as a world title reign for Rude.
Shake, Rattle 'n' Roll definitely the best, most devastating neck breaker without out a doubt. Honky woulda slapped it on Rude and would be back in the dressing room combing his hair.
Rude was ahead of his time and paved the way for HBK ..... Which when Rude left they made that gimmick to fill that spot. I won't take anything away from any of the performers you listed but I put Rude over most of them for being the complete package as well as an being a legit tough guy in the back.
During his 15-month reign as I-C champion, did HTM ever actually WIN a match where the title was on the line? I remember reading the match results in PWI and his matches always seemed to end with him being DQ'ed or counted out.
Rick Rude was one of the most underrated worker's of all time. A travesty he broke his back in Japan, because he had a good decade ahead of him. One of the best on the mic, legitimately tough, and back when the neckbreaker was a move to be feared.
@bigjonstudd100 Thanks. I tracked down the clip here. He was facing Sting at one of those big stadium shows and the ring was on a circular raised platform. Sting did a suicide dive through the ropes onto him. When Rude went down, he hit the edge of the platform with his back. If it had been at a regular arena, he probably would have been fine.
@StreetKnight1 Rude was the face here. As Ravishing Rick he was mostly always a heel but he had very brief stints as a face, like when he confronted Shane Douglas in ECW and also here. There were also hints in WCW they were going to have a Vader vs Rude feud where Rude would play a tweener in that one, but it never happened
The reason these two are doing indy shows because Vince McMahon doesn't pay them enough and keeps most of the money themselves so they do indy shows to earn extra money. Some wrestlers only earn anywhere from 2500 to a million per wrestling appearance depending on the wrestler.
@hanktoni Rude left wwf after summerslam 90 due to a pay dispute. i think he was pissed that the ultimate warrior was paid so much more for their cage match that rude carried from start to finish.
I think honky was just more or less dropped. TBH his time had come and gone in the wwf so vince cut him loose but im just guessing there.
I think maybe there was some kind of no compete clause in their contracts stopping them from going straight to wcw but if that is the case Rude's was nearly up..
@1981bigdee They didn't start putting no-compete clauses into contracts until later, when Lex Luger showed up on the first Nitro the day after his WWF contract expired and the famous night when Rick Rude appeared on a taped Raw and a live Nitro on the same night.
@hanktoni ...cos he arrived in wcw at halloween havoc 91 dressed as the halloween phantom amd beat the Z man Tom Zenk. Im not really sure about all this but i think thats how it was. If anyone knows otherwise let me know.
I would have loved to see this feud play out in WWF back in the day. Even though Rude was hands down the better performer, Honky was still funny as hell.
Was this really in 1991?? Two of the greatest wrestlers ever squaring off in a high school gym? It seems both of these guys should have still been main event material at this time. What the hell happened???
Good Gawd that was bad. Usually Rick is not too shabby on the mic. Rick Rude is a better wrestler than HTM, but best IC of all time. Too many to choose. Steamboat, Bret Hart, Mr. Perfect, Macho Man, etc. all better than HTM.
I personally think The Rude Awaking was more devasating than the shake rattle an roll an lets face it Rude was a better competitor than The Honky Tonk Man
Rick Rude was the better IC Champion then Honky Tonk because Rude defeated the Warrior, the man that ended Honky Tonk Man 15 month run as IC champion in quick fashion at summerslam.
Rude was the better worker by far between the two and his neckbreaker looked lethal. Honky looked phony and his interviews sucked. Sure, he held the IC strap longer than anyone else in WWE history, however since the matches are a work, that doesn't really mean anything.
Pedro & Tito were the greatest. Savage was a chump that hid behind his woman & Honkey Tonk always pussed out. Bruno Sammartino hammered both & in his 50's to boot.
Honky was great but Rude was better,I also think that the reigns of Mr.Perfect,Ricky Steamboat,Bret Hart and Shawn Micheals should garner consideration!!!
I think what I hated about IWCCW was how unorganized it was. I mean, what kind of company that has television would allow kids to get that close (ON THE RING)?
Honky Tonk is the greatest no doubt... a drew massive crowds (without Hogan) as IC champ because people wanted to see him lose.. they wanted his blood! Also he lost it in the style that helped Warrior go from midcarder to superstar in 30 seconds.
Rick Rude only held the belt for 4 months with the sole purpose of elevating the Warrior to main event standards.. and was great fun.
But Honky is the greatest ever really there is no question about it.
The whole purpose of Rude winning the belt was to build up Warrior to beat him in the return fight. Rude being the great worker had Warrior chasing the belt for 4 months this allowed him to get even more over than he was and become a stronger worker.... time Warrior won the IC belt back at Summerslam 89 (great match) Warrior was instantly a MEGA superstar which led to WM6 7 months later where Warrior won the WWF title cleanly from Hogan.
THAT my friend is why Rude was an awesome as well.
your post got me thinking. maybe the wwf would have been better off if rude had gone on to wrestlemania 6 and beaten hogan. but then again, hogan wouldnt dump the belt to bret, so would he dump it to rude, who also had the legs to have a successful run? probably not.
because it was bobby heenan's interferance that won him the belt... there for it was not a clean loss but he could drop that strap to go towards the heavyweight title... which he ended up having ne way when it came to him and hogan at wm6
i think rude is one of the best wrestlers ever, but honky is cool too,im not hatin on him,i never saw honky in his prime, cos by the time i started watching wrestling it was 1989 or so,but watching some of his old stuff,i thought he did a good enuff job as a heel.
Honky Tonk Man had the longest consecutive reign. However, Pedro Morales (619 days over two reigns) and Don Muraco (541 days over two reigns) both held the title longer collectively.
till this very moment as i type these words. i couldnt stand honky tonk man then, now, and into the future. he represented everything i ever hated in a man. i never loathed any other wrestler but this guy.
The best thing that ever happened to vince, was hulkamania, as well as the other wrestling talent in the industry then. Everything was centered around hulkamania.
die off, even tho all along we knew the plots were fake. I watched wrestling till about 2001, then I had enough of Hulk Hogan fake wrestling and the silly plots that were taking place.
novusmundi, I agree with you on wrestling today. To my opinion I don't think wrestling is as popular today or as interesting as it was back I'll say mid 80's, late 80's and to mid 90's. The days when Hulk Hogan was just making a name for himself, then hulkamania exploded, you had big talent then, like Greg Valentine, steamboat, JYD, Super fly, Savage, hot rod, Jessi ventura, Andre before he died, the hart foundation, and good tag teams. Then mid 90's steamboat retired, other big names started to
Ive got a question.....WHO IS THIS JABRONE WITH THE MICROPHONE? WHO IS THIS TWAT WITH THE HAT? WHO REALLY CARES? But the biggest question is why has this mug wearing a rug got a job?
SeanCore31, ok let me explain, lol. When I say steamboat is the best pound for pound wrestler, I mean his weight upto 300 pounds. Whether its savage, or bret hart, honky tonk man, jake the snake, rick rude, even british bulldog, and curt henning etc. I say he's the best cause as I watch his matches he usually dominates most of his matches, and he's always using his head. The way he counters a move, and thinks what he's going to do, to counter that move. Curt Henning would be the best technician.
LOL that's an awesome joke! When I first read it (before I watched the vid) I was like "WTF is wvoutlaw talking about? Then came the punchline! lol Good stuff man, you got me on that one!
Unfortunately, the IC title has lost its prestige because it changes hands way to frequently and is rarely defended. Rude should not be mentioned in this category. During the early '80s, Tito Santana was the best...But the greatest of all time...HTM!!! Greatest sports entertainer of his era!!! And George Napolitano from Brooklyn, NY is the greatest wrestling photographer of all time!!!
You are right. The best heel was Ric Flair and the best face was Ricky Steamboat. Savage is close behind those two. The three of them put on the best matches and some were against each other. Especially Steamboat and Savage at WMIII.
the honkytonk man will forever be known for 2 things. 1 for impersonating elvis like thousands of other drunken idiots do and 2 for getting squashed in less than 30 seconds at the 1st summerslam in 1988 by the ultimate warrior for the ic title and he's been all over with ever since
Way to close!!I remember when we tried to get that close back in the day, security would throw us out! That's why they started to put up barracades around the ring.
wow..it really kind of breaks my heart to see former world class wwe superstars barely scraping a living in smaller feds for way less money and way less exposure...wrestlers should have a union and plan well for their retirements..so that they don't have to work in smaller feds for next to nothing unless they actually want to...
Because they hand belts to the same guys like old people give bread crumbs to pidgeons. There is no revolving door of talent in Wrestling now. so it is the same guys over and over and over and over. Thats what happens when you kill off your competition. Big rule is to make your business better, you need competition to keep you on your toes. Thx Vince. Now who are you going to steal ideas from now?
Rude was baby face a few times. He even teamed with warrior before going to wwf

His name is Boston Bad Boy Tony Rumble and he is one of the biggest pieces of shit that ever walked the face of the earth.

It looks like Rick Rude was booked to be the face in this fued. The program between them never took off though.

Send them to "Who?". Does this mean Jim Neidhart got all the letters that were sent in? :-)

And George Napolitano from Brooklyn, NY is the greatest wrestling photographer of all time!!!
kramer1471 3 years ago
C'mon, at least agree that George Napolitano is a great wrestling photographer!

pound for pound ricky steamboat is the best wrestler in his weight class, in my opinion, what ya think?
mrke8ting 3 years ago
I 1st need to know that weight class. Because if it includes Randy Savage & Mr. Perfect, Steamboat comes a close 3rd. lol
SeanCore31 3 years ago
You are right. The best heel was Ric Flair and the best face was Ricky Steamboat. Savage is close behind those two. The three of them put on the best matches and some were against each other. Especially Steamboat and Savage at WMIII.

the honkytonk man will forever be known for 2 things. 1 for impersonating elvis like thousands of other drunken idiots do and 2 for getting squashed in less than 30 seconds at the 1st summerslam in 1988 by the ultimate warrior for the ic title and he's been all over with ever since

"smartest wrestling person?"
MalnourishedGoat 3 years ago
wow..it really kind of breaks my heart to see former world class wwe superstars barely scraping a living in smaller feds for way less money and way less exposure...wrestlers should have a union and plan well for their retirements..so that they don't have to work in smaller feds for next to nothing unless they actually want to...

i know we're talking old school here but why is everyone forgetting the 8 time ic champ chris jericho
apollocreed1703 3 years ago
Because they hand belts to the same guys like old people give bread crumbs to pidgeons. There is no revolving door of talent in Wrestling now. so it is the same guys over and over and over and over. Thats what happens when you kill off your competition. Big rule is to make your business better, you need competition to keep you on your toes. Thx Vince. Now who are you going to steal ideas from now?
novusmundi 3 years ago
i think honky was pretty much living by the old ric flair saying to be the manm you gotta beat the man

It took such a long time for Bret Hart to finally win the big one, he was the best IC champ for awhile.
