  • First of all: Shioda Sensei was awesome.

When I first began Aikido, I was taking falls with my bad grasp on Unkemi (The methods of taking falls) and good god was I, either, injured or very close to being injured.

The big moves make it look fake but those are so that the fallers do not break on contact and can actually have a life after the demonstration while still showing the full swing of the technique.

PS: I feel like I missed out so much having not known about the man when he was alive.

  • Wow!

  • omg, Master Yoda existed in real life.

  • (continued from the comment below) If you know how heavy the thing your holding, you would know how you can balance, but if you don't know, it is very difficult to balance. Similar thing is hapenning when masters use Aikido or Budo tecniques. Usually, when people hold other people and try to push or pull, they mainly use arm muscles. but when msters use Akido tecniques, they use more inner muscles and lower half of the body.

  • I saw a many guestions about why the "uke (the opponent)" can't remove his hand, so I would like to share my understanding of Akido from ten years of training.

Imagine you are closing your eyes, and holding an empty bag. Then, suddenly some guy put a really heavy thing into the bag while you don't know. Do you think you can let that bag go very guickly? I think you would lose your balance because you don't know how heavy the bag is until you see it.

  • nice footage - and the pat metheny music was an unexpected delight!

Shioda Sensei is so great. i don't do Yoshinkan, but only because of the format of the classes. i love how each of O Sensei's students captures an aspect of him, especially so with Gozo. thank you for posting!

  • A japán egy kemény nép !

  • hahaha i love this sensei

  • At about 1 minute in (the nikkyo) how does he get the uke to keep hold with one hand? Or is the guy just going with it for sake of the demonstration? This clip is an absolute joy to watch, some of the best aikido I've seen, from all involved, and he's clearly having a great time lol

  • @Shindai at 1min, Shioda says"he should separate his hand, but he can't. he he he"

  • @acesces I love that he's having such a good time with it lol. Can you explain to me why he can't remove his hand? I'm only a few lessons into aikido and don't understand. Thanks for your answers.

  • @Shindai in this video 4:39, watch?v=hHh_8uQPD5E blue shuts guy says "you can remove your hand,so you can escape from aiki" but you can't remove your hand during Okamoto sensei's nage. scientist says maybe using muscle reaction.I don't understand either.but he is just TV guy so I think this is true.he don't think like,"make beautiful enbu"

  • @Shindai

its yonkyo, the fourth control centred on the ulnar nerve near the wrist, and it HURTS.

  • 2:14 greate

  • no way this shioda idiot can fight multiple opponents in a real fight.

this is all choreographed & fake.

Brazilian jiu jitsu or MMA are the most effective combat systems ever.

  • @BluePittbull666 your'e wrong

  • Who would ever belive in a thing like that? That's bullshit...

  • shit doesen't look shitty as aikido

  • hahahha 2:22 epic

  • @ 2:58 wtf??? 90% of these moves are a joke; too passive, i luv combat aikido. but this is weird

  • @ThaUnprofessional It's atemi sorry iif i write wrong

  • My 7th dan sensei would still start panting after doing 2 on 1. Shioda sensei in the vedio was 66 years old and did not increase a bit of breathing. This is very crazily incredible...

  • It would have been very fun to learn under him. He's so high spirited. :)

  • Ive had the pleasure of seeing one of these demonstrations in person. Truly awesome. Afterward we ate authentic Japanese cuisine. That part was not so awesome. They eat some weird shit.

  • かけられる弟子の方が大変ですね。

  • Shioda Sensei. Uma lição de dedicação, humildade e bom humor. Sua agilidade é incrível.

  • hahhhahaahaahhahahhahhahahha Barf

  • his body is not human's body because his body is cover with weapon of aikido

  • I like all those neck throws and wrist locks.

  • OMG THIS LOOKS FAKE BUT IT IS REAL!

    AMAZING!

  • @xHAWAIIxOWNZx very real Ous!

  • @xHAWAIIxOWNZx Well, there are parts where they fall on purpose due to it being a demonstration and they didn't want to disturb the flow. Especially with Shioda Gozo... You just didn't fuck with that guy. His students are also pretty hardball.

  • sensei shioda is a great teacher i wish i could of meet him n study aikido with him

  • Who attacks anyone like this?

  • Osu!

  • I do not trust in it

  • Outstanding demo that showed the highest level of control extended into the opponents! Amazingly fast footwork, good timing and excellent flows with the opponents' movements and momentum!

  • dunno.. the other 2 seems like retarded that just run into him..

maybe it's a great master but i seemed so fake to me..

  • I speak no japanese but i think hes hilarious. fantastic aikido master extremly strong for his size seems like a very realistic combat form of aikido

  • any chance of a translation?

  • please

  • I get the feeling that he was caught @1.50 lol

  • According to me telling that it depends all on the person and all the martial arts are equals is as telling that all the cars are equals and all depends on driver...

Then try to drive a dragster in mountain or run in Indianapolis with a Jeep

Simply you must decide what you are looking for and make your choice, but this is only my idea

  • I took aikido for 25 yrs but last week I got jumped and beat up by some high school kids. I want my money back. Lawsuit against Ueshiba is pending.

  • Notice there is no rubber matt that thoes guy's are falling on it's a hard floor, that must hurt a little ?

  • @MyREDTAIL that's not hard-floor, that's a tatami...listen to the tudd they make when they fall... It's not a hard tudd like when you fall on hard-ground...

  • @theawakener7 dude your just a fucking retard

  • Da ja by dedu nadoval pizdyulej)

  • excellent!! shioda sensei was awesome. very effortless and a very high understanding of aiki. now im gonna see the other ones ;) cheers for posting!

  • @atarax

Its not a "fraud", its a part of Aikido - if the attacker lets go, the attack has ended. If there is no more attack, you dont need to defend yourself anymore. This is what makes Aikido a defensive martial art, its not like your opponent has to be pinned/thrown through the air, etc.

Btw the guy performing here is a Budo Meijin - its not like u get the highest budo rank possible for faking and frauding...

  • at around 1:00 the wrist lock is a fraud. That particular one only works if the attacker doesn't let go, which he will

  • I bet you'd get one on the nose, from Shioda sensei, if you let go...

  • perhaps. I like aikido and jujitsu but that one is fake.

  • ok, but it is fake from YOUR point of view, ONLY.

I'm sorry, but it is an ignorant thing to say, and it indicates that your are looking for the wrong things in aikido...

(it takes some years to realize that aikido is not about bar fights)

  • You are not a practioner of the art. I pity you as you do not understand what aikido is about. May you find peace..

  • Exodus 15:3 The Lord is a Man of war, The Lord is His name.

Peace is not what life is, life is chaos. (no that has nothing to do with me original comment)

  • @ataraxic89

There are situations where you cannot let got. You want, but you cannot.

    I experienced this first hand.

  • Isn't that the point? To have the attacker let go? He just as easily could have trapped his hand there, but instead he encircled his hand around to form a lock/breakaway technique. Believe it or not, there are some attackers in real life that do not let go so easily. Furthermore he's showing the aiki aspect of the technique to the audience.

  • tudo combinadoo ..hahaha

  • es lo maximo el viejito

  • can sum1 sub this vid?

  • HI YAAH!

  • lol you guys shouldnt ever underestimate this guy he fought againts 30 yakuza memebers and deafeated tham all by bringing down the leader first he also foguht in a life and death sittuation while he was in the immperial army look this guy up you see

  • дайте мужикам лом

  • inposible kill him

  • @jGustainis noob..He knows the direction of attack

  • hardest 80 year old in the world

  • haha he reminds me of yoda

  • this is just amazing...

  • So it doesnt matter with martial art is better, it is the attitude of a martial artist that reflects the true strength and value of an art!

  • @FarmerMP , this is the best response ever, thanks!

  • I think, the most interesting part in aikido is its philosophy. It is very easy to hurt someone in a fight, and there are lots of methods and techniques to do so. But in aikido you try to defend without harming your opponent and that is even harder to achieve, than just hurting each other. If you do martial arts just to bet someone up, than you missed the point.

  • there is no best martial art...there is no technique better than another..it all depends on the person doing the technique or martial art..if a marital artist loses a fight..it doesn't mean the marital art he practices was bad..the man lost the fight not the martial art...there is always somebody out there who is better than you.

  • @creepymileyfan actually there are bad techniques some techniques no matter who you are just dont work

  • @creepymileyfan true. in aikido, it is not about techniques. learning aikido is learning a way to respond to a situation in real life.

  • he did not have much of a choice did he?

  • dumb yanks dont understand how asian martial arts works

  • how do you kick his ass when hes dead

  • @you2306 In Aikidó you hit too, very dynamic and fast, but not uke,.. you attack a space around/over uke, if you arent blind you understand it! :)

  • this video didn't even come to tell you how good Aikido is XD it's just a demonstration. I don't understand why are you so aggressive against it... probably because you can't accept it so you go against it. But then again nobody forces you to look at it you know.

  • @jayangli congrats you can beet up an 80 year old man provided he realy is faking

  • I was privileged to train under this magnificent man (in the same dojo in the video, in Higashi Koganei on the outskirts of Tokyo, about 3 years after this video was made) and under his son in the UK. I came to aikido after many years of boxing and karate and was lucky to have seen other forms of martial arts before this - aikido requires uncommon maturity, respect, discipline and self-awareness (in addition to the physical power and timing required in other sports)..

  • Is this real Aikido, or another form of Aikido?

  • Well... It's Aikido. If by Real Aikido you mean the Serbian MA, then no, this isnt it. This would be "Yoshinkan" Aikido, a style developed by Gozo Shioda (the little man in the Hakama), based on the hard training of the early years of aikido. It's aikido with a more practical approach.

  • I like indeed martial arts with a practical approach. But I ask this question to so many people, but I still don't know: Is Judo also a handy practical martial art?

  • I hate discussing martial arts as self defense systems. If you want something that is practical for self defense go to a self defense course. If you want something to train your body and your mind, with the ultimate goal of becoming a healthy and happy human being, find a martial art that you like and practice it.

  • yes it is youll find that its practices can apply to any situation

  • Yes, but don't you then have to be very good at it, because I don't know yet, which I know we'll learn later, how to block somebody hitting me or kicking me.

  • @larbo1616 im not sure what martial art your taking but in aikido you dont really block the punch or the kick. its more about redirecting the kick or the punch. when someone punches at you they give a certen amount of energy. your job as aikidoka is to redirect the energy they give in that punch and draw them off balance. its simple physics really.

  • @kyle1815

Yeah, you're right. Sometimes, in my martial art - aikibudo, we block first and then we redirect the attack. But most of the attacks we redirect. I think this is better than Kung Fu. Of course, this style is great, but the whole principle of self-defense sucks; it is indeed way better to redirect an attack than to use brutal force.

  • @larbo1616 im not sure how you redirect an attack if you blocked it first. if you block the punch dont you stoped the flow of energy? and kung fu is more of a dance. there isnt much power behind kung fu.

  • @kyle1815 There is some kind of knife defense in aikibudo where you first have to block the arm and then you do a wrist lock and then let him fall.

  • @larbo1616 whats the disarm called? and im pretty sure kung fu turned into "art" once they figured out its so great for fighting lol

  • There is no point calling kung fu "some kind of dance". It was originally designed to be a fighting art, but it turned out to be more like an "art".

  • @larbo1616 by the way i just looked up some aikibudo videos, very nice. seems to be aikido with more judo in it. am a right?

  • @kyle1815 No, actually not. It's the same as aikido, but a somewhat 'harder' style of it. It's derived from Daito Ryu Aikijujutsu and from the teachings of the Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto Ryu dojo.

  • @larbo1616 ah... its interesting. i like it. lol. as in harder do you mean harder to learn. because aikido is hard enough as it its..

  • @kyle1815 No no, absolutely not. At difficulty level, it's the same, but it's harder in form that it's more punching and stuff. Of course, it has still the old aikido principles.

  • @larbo1616 actually kung fu means skill from effort and refers to anything that requares skill ie chess or martial arts what america calls kung fu is called wushu in china and in china no system was originally called kung fu shaolin kung fu was simply called shaolin there are many chinese martial arts ie shaolin wing chun choy li fut or choy lay fut hung gar chin-na and many more

  • @larbo1616 yes judo is practical but for street peposes use the non sport form jujitsu judo is taken from judo

  • @larbo1616 absolutly! judo is a very handy and practical martial art. a friend of mine was on the police force for a while. he was also highly ranked in judo. he used it all the time while on the force. i still prefer aikido but judo is good too.

  • @larbo1616 this is emaginary aikido onlystevin seagul uses real aikido jk he is using as little of his limbs as possable so that you understand how the main trunk of the body and their momentum do the work

  • I'm gonna be honest for a second ...

I love watching these videos and then seeing the comments of angry guys who love MMAs, but have it in their mind that anything martial arts related has to be a sport... with points.

    =)

  • Earth's very own Yoda!!!

    I love aiki.

  • I still love seeing this tiny 60+ year old man able to manipulate the bodies of guys twice his weight.

  • Please think about his age. It is 63 years old.

It is not movement that the elderly person can do.

  • @mosel1966 "1:45秒のとこ、塩田さんスカってますよねー(笑)" I am sorry. Would you be so kind and translate what you said to English? Thank you very much. I'm sorry, I don't speak Japanese, but I would like to know what you said. Thank you.

  • @GaolisVideoLog He/She points out that around 1:45 Msater Shioda actually did not even touch his student but that student looked as if Shioda hang a technique. So, @mosel believed there was cheep trick or it's fake. In traditional Japanese and Chinese martial arts, some of which are real fighting arts, there are sometimes preestablished harmony between masters and students, a sort of subconcious psychological behavior.

  • Aw... This video seems like it's really worth watching, shame I dont understand japanese. Can anyone translate it please? Or add subs?

  • There are photos of Shioda Sensei with Mike Tyson, and Tyson looks with fear of him, I'm not saying that all aikidokas are mighty warriors who can control Tysons or Crocops, but Sensei like Shioda were something else.

  • I somewhat use these techniques when I play basketball.

  • @MarcosFerdinand boy that must realy piss the other players off "HEY MAN QUIT THROWING PEOPLE" lol

  • it´s amazing!!!what a power..thats for the people who think that aikido is not real.....

  • and its not. I wish he could do that with mirko cropcop.

  • Did the sensei just make a mistake at 6:32??

  • We all make mistakes! If his aikido were perfect - what need would he have to live...

  • @Awakener7

And let me guess what Akiedo(If I spelled it right) students should study. MMA right? MMA is effective, but it isnt the win all beat all martial art. No MA is and only some UFC fanboy would say otherwise.

  • これがマジで63歳なのか

    化けモンじゃねえか

  • well the awakener7 is a real winner LOL.

You should keep your mouth shut if you are not willing to back it up ? I have trained in several martial arts and Yoshinkan Aikido is a great system. You have the invite to come down and see for yourself ?

But I guess it is easy to be tough and belittle other people via the internet ? it is your safety blanket.

Have a great life you closed minded looser.

  • Well anytime you would like to come to my dojo and see and feel Yoshinkan Aikiod let me know just make sure you have your life insurance paid up ?

  • Gozo is really talented aikido is soo great

  • people who claims aikido is shit is stupid... u dont know the true purpose of it...

  • Yea right, and you probably are a pimple faced 16 year old who has never had to fight in his life, who fantasizes about being a big tough grown-up getting the crap beat out of him in a ring & for what? Before you comment, make sure you know what you are talking about junior. I suppose that the Japanese National Riot Police & Special Diplomatic Security are sent to train with his school for one year full time because it doesn't work in combat.

  • Aikido is really great, do you know how long it will take to get to 8 dan in the west because i know you can get first dan in like 2-3 years so i am just curious

  • Aikido is a lifetime practice/study...Do not worry about ranks and get on the mat and practice and, practice more when you don't fell like it!

  • getting first dan in 2-3 years? i doubt it. aikido takes a VERY long time to get good at. 8th dan, id say 20+ years of study. steveuke is right. dont worry about rank, it doesnt mean much. a second degree black should make less mistakes than a first degree black belt. thats about all rank matters. so just get out there and practice like crazy. aikido is a GREAT ma. iv been doin it for a while and i love it and plan on doing it for the rest of my life.

  • yea but i think the maximum knowledge you will have with 7th dan and 8th dan like segal cause the rest are more honorable i guess

  • @kyle1815 Actually, that is not completely accurate. It can be done in 11 months. It has been possible for over 50 years now through the Senshusei course that sensei Shioda started for the toyko police and became available to the public much later. But we are talking 11 months of very intense training.

  • @kyle1815 TRAIN HARD LEARN & APPLY- OUS!

  • @ravisdb " i know you can get first dan in like 2-3 years" Really? Where? You know, in Asia, we call martial arts like Aikido "old people martial arts", simply because it takes so long til you get good at them, that the masters are all old people. That's of course just a joke, but it takes ages to get it right nonetheless.

  • This is very good any one can translate?

  • Every time I look Siodas shows and videos of his students I feel like they are from different schools! How could his perfect technic origin from that quite heavy and not real actions of classic aikido.

    He is amazing IMHO

  • did they beat him at 1:50?

  • gozo shioda was one of the best aiki masters out there. a lot of folks tend to misunderstand the essence of aiki and go dancing around like fucking ferries :) shioda sensei was very technical and subtle, his style is very advanced

  • great technics
