Does anyone know what theme is playing during this classic clip? The theme also appeared in the second song you hear during the awesome Oktoberfest scenes. I've always wondered since whenever I think of Germany, I think of this soundtrack. Please post if you know. Thanks so much! Vielen Dank!
@AshleyMarkPomeroy No, tell a lie - the IMDB lists "Harold Berens" in the role, but says that his scenes were deleted. So presumably Stark filled in later on. I wonder why?
I know this is a very old joke that people still tell today... but I'm trying to figure out if the scene was inspired by the joke, or did the joke evolve out of this scene.
I loved the Pink Panther movies. Peter Sellers really brought slapstick comedy back with the series of movies. I still laugh when I watch them and I have seen them several times.
sucks, peter seller's wprk is very underrated. shame he got really tired of playing this role as inspector cluseau. he was never really a comedian, though he played it like a pro
Excellent timing. Laugh? I nearly sh*t! Sellers was great, Steve Martin too. Thanks for both of them. I loved Steve in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels making a hilarious comic team with Michael Caine. But I think his Clouseau was arguably not quite as funny as Sellers, but still great comedy.
Steve Martin is a good comic, but, nothing compared to the Master, Peter Sellers.
Regarding the comment by..coolhandflukey, I agree with his sarcasm about the remake of the Thomas Crown Affair with Rene Russo and Pierce Brossnan.
You can't redo world class movies made with actors like Steve Mcqueen and Faye Dunaway. Mcqueen is my favorite all time actor. Dunaway sizzles with her sexy eyes.
Sellers was brilliant, irrespective of the character he was portraying. I can't understand how they got through the scenes without breaking down with laughter.
Lots of subtle humor in this scene. Like when Clouseau, a Frenchman, comes in and tries his best to speak German: "Guten tag". And the guy says "Good day" (which is English for "Guten tag"). Then when he says "room" (or r-uuuh-m) the guy doesn't understand him, so he reverts back to German ("zimmer"). The only thing I don't like about this scene is that the innkeeper could have been a little bit more emphatic when he said "No" (that his dog doesn't bite).
They put marijuana in the old man's pipe; true story; that's why he is moving so slowly. If I made this movie, I would have had Sellers open the dictionary more toward the end of the book. He opened it too early for either "room" or "zimmer."
huh? i remember this line with a beautiful blonde at a bus stop, anyone else remember? i was wondering if it was ursula andress who said "that's not my dog".
Along with the Monty Python fish-slapping sketch, there's something fundamental about this scene. You could use it as a way of testing whether a person is human; if they don't laugh, they're a Terminator or a Replicant or what-have-you.
@Oliverfilm5 Are you guys serious? Watch Lolita and Dr Strangelove...........Peter Sellers wasn't just a comedian, he was arguably the greatest actor to ever have lived......
@JonnyCashmore He was certainly the greatest comedic actor of all time, hands down! At least, I've never come across another who could equal him. I miss him.
@fahqmein I use this line all the time with my wife, except I leave off the "you idiot" part. I do it with the Inspector Clouseau accent. I also frequently use the line "the case is solve-idd".
classic joke and excellently performed by Mr. Sellers. Mr. Martin could not and have not executed Clouseau as well as Mr. Sellers. The producers should have found a better and funnier actor to play in the Pink Panther movies.
@ttorres89 I think they shouldn't have been remade. Just re-release the originals for new generations to see on the big screen. But studios never do that, unless it is for 1 night only or a 25th anniversary of a film. Another film remake that should have never been was "The Truth About Charlie." The original "Charade" is my favorite movie, hard to beat a combination of Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn.
I remember Shirley Mc Claine telling saying that in the car one day he believed he (Peter Sellars) actually lived many lives as the very personalities he portrayed as an actor.
so much for calling him an idiot. ha!
