Between the wife and D-fens... ehh, I'd say she was just trying to protect her and her child... It's hard to trust someone who's got a temper as bad as his, he's a bit dangerous, seeing as... well all the stuff he does in the movie. She is a bit harsh towards him, but hey, it is what it is.
The music coming on at 2:49, makes this scene soooooooooo frakkin EPIC!!! This scene should go on public display in a museum and become a National Treasure.

Everyone has had that one day when the pressure got to them and they probably felt for an instant that they could be capable of anything. Most people get over it and carry on with the depressing finailty of the mundane. But what if you didn't? What if you pushed it all the way? What if it got to you that badly? Would you be D-Fens?

The character of the wife in the film is not portrayed as being very sympathetic and, in fact, penalising D-Fens by preventing him from seeing his daughter may have been the start of his own descent into violence, even though it is probably true to say it was in his character anyway. Given this I not surprised reaction to the ex wife character is negative.
@BigL1391 Because, to my mind, she is using 'pre-emptive action' against D-Fens based on what appear to be her own selfish motives. She wants to dis-associate so she goes and fences him off from their child because it is more convenient for her, and less irksome for her to move on. The scene we have just watched shows her being somewhat guilty and rationalizing about it, and the police officer looking awkward at the blatantly self serving motives of the woman.
She's a total bitch! What this dialogue reveals is that she slept with the judge to get the restraining order because she had no right to get it in the first place! Damn, that girl deserves to get attacked by the Mexican thugs, not Douglass.

@BelatedCommiseration Yeah, you're right. I'm sure the goal of the writer was to great a relatable character. It's just that everyone is blaming the wife and villianizing her, and glorifying D-Fens. I guess what I meant wasn't empathizing. I meant it's wrong to look up to him as some kind of martyr for they're own bad side. There isn't any notion that the wife is to blame for anything here and they're antagonizing her.

@bigstabby True. To be honest the mistake is probably with the writing. Or maybe the screenplay was written by some one with ex wife issues! The character of the wife in the film is not portrayed as being very sympathetic and, in fact, penalising D-Fens by preventing him from seeing his daughter may have been the start of his own descent into violence, even though it is probably true to say it was in his character anyway. Given this I not surprised reaction to the ex wife character is negative.

@BigL1391 Because, to my mind, she is using 'pre-emptive action' against D-Fens based on what appear to be her own selfish motives. She wants to dis-associate so she goes and fences him off from their child because it is more convenient for her, and less irksome for her to move on. The scene we have just watched shows her being somewhat guilty and rationalizing about it, and the police officer looking awkward at the blatantly self serving motives of the woman.

He left a long suicide note explaining the problems associated with feminism and "domestic crime" and how men are destroyed by bigot laws favoring feminist. He also pointed out that these women, often unharmed (harm is not a requisite for "domestic crime") and their children often end up broke and in shelters because they can't afford to live in the US without the complete family.
